This actually sounds like the best idea at the moment.
Personally, I don't think facepunch could make a satellite that would work correctly.
I wonder why they have to spend millions of dollars for space shuttles.
It's probably just for shits and giggles, I'm sure.

Let's fucking go guys!
The easiest way to get to space is using a balloon. Sever people have done it under $200.
All you need is a camera, a weather balloon, helium gas, a chute, a good enclosure and a way to track it via GPS. Hell, a mobile phone will do it.
And then a few licenses from various administrations and mountains of legal paperwork, I'm sure.

Facepunch attempts to build this, it somehow explodes on takeoff.
I'm not sure if this is serious or not, but I like how lots of people are chipping in with ideas, some serious some not. The people who are shitting on it are letting it down a bit but thankfully we're all ignoring them!
I think if we ACTUALLY did get to space, we'd have to see what happens if you open a shaken can of fizzy pop while in orbit. Floating drink everywhere!

Probably not much, actually. It's probably the same sort of clearance you need for launching big model rockets.
I think people need to read the thread again. I'll put it in bold to be clear.
He isn't trying to send human beings into space; he just wants to send a payload into space.
As an aerospace engineering student I can attest that it isn't that difficult to design and build the rocket, but the funding is quite hard to come by. The expense of the project (and hence feasibility) all depend on what size/mass of payload the OP wants to launch and what orbit (if any) he wishes to achieve.
If you'd just like to see the "edge of space" then the balloon idea suggested earlier is your best bet. It isn't too complex, nor expensive, a project for a group of this caliber to succeed.

What are you trying to imply, good sir?

It's goddamn rocket science, son.
What are you trying to imply, good sir?
That Facepunch has an average population age of about 15 thus our access to resources for a project like this is minimal.

I would know...
As an aerospace engineering student ...
We still would need to buy all the parts, then test it, running the risk that each test something goes catastrophically wrong and the entire assembly disintegrates on the ground, forcing us to buy yet MORE parts.

It's a camera attached to a balloon. No aerial testing is needed. The trick is to make an enclosure that keeps the gear safe and warm during the ascent and that you can track it during the descent.

I heard that to launch objects into high altitude we need to get the FAA or something like that for permission in case an airplane crashes into it.

man fuck the police were going to the fucking thermosphere bitches!
Sorry for bumping my own thread here, but I've begun work on a prototype engine to test until i've got about a 5% failure rate or less. Lots of epoxy is being used, and sandpaper.
fill the rocket with blood capsules
make it explode as it reenters the atmosphere
The first tests aren't going to go into space. When I actually do launch a rocket my goal is to hit 1 mile up. Body construction is probably going to be the most important design as it needs to house on-board computers for tracking, launch, and retrieval. The retrieval system was gonna be using a shock-chord and parachute.

Use an orange casing/chute for easy spotting.
Use an orange casing/chute for easy spotting.
Will it still be spottable about a mile up?
Possible a road flare fired by chute release?
There was an idea that me and a buddy had, we could use a electrical charge to fire a spring at a flare trigger and ignite jet fuel to launch the rocket, but that'd be so much more expensive then a solid fuel rocket.
use a balloon.
use a balloon.
No.
I'd really love it if this happens, someone should create a screensaver that displays a live feed that comes from the satellite.
and off course just a live feed to watch
Don't worry it won't
I once almost killed my eight grade physical science class with a haywire model rocket, does that qualify me?
I once almost killed my eight grade physical science class with a haywire model rocket, does that qualify me?
No. Did you even do research and testing before bringing in a rocket to school?
Our first goal should be to fly cacti into North Korea.
We get large balloons, like the propaganda balloons used by South Koreans sending aid across the border, and instead of attaching aid to them, we just attach a cactus. Watch it float across the border, then at least we've accomplished getting the first cactus into the DPRK. Other than that, not much of an accomplishment (If it doesn't get shot down by AA guns)
Sending paper is one thing over is one thing, paper is light.
Cacti are heavy :saddowns:
