I don't see anything awesome about duct tape wallets. It just shows you cannot afford a real wallet and you have no money to put in it. Therefore, you need to refer to the basics of getting a job.

I agree with this. If It was something a bit more difficult to make or unique, it would be worth it. However, Duct Tape wallets are pretty common (You can even buy kits with specially cut duct tape pieces) and it's more of a fun DIY thing than a fashion statement.
If he was making other things out of Duct Tape, like the Duct Tape Tie, then it would be worthwhile.
