Usually the big toe is the most prone to ingrown toenails. Just push the sides to check if you feel any pain, if you do then you have a ingrown toenail. To prevent them, don't cut your toenails clumsily.
Don't be a bitch about it.
If you had cut your toenails appropriately then you would not have this issue!
I highly doubt you actually need a surgery. They just want your money
It hurts, and it's all fucked up looking.
What works for me getting rid of ingrown toenails, is I use a nail, yes, a nail. Not a very thick one, but kind of a thin one. I jab it underneath the nail at the side of the infected toe, and push the nail out of the skin until I get as far as possible, almost to the bottom of the nail. Hurts like hell but it works.
I've had the surgery 4 times now. It isn't too bad, but if it's reoccurring like mine, I'd get it permanently removed.
UPDATE : I'm finally going for the surgery tomorrow, i have to wake up at 5:45 tomorrow cause I'm priority #1 on my podiatrist's patient list. Excited to get this thing removed
I had it, twice. They basically numb your toe with like 3-4 needles, and you can't even feel the rest. Although, they use a scapel to cut and stuff obviously, just close your eyes if you're not into that :P

unless for some reason your toenail splinters on the sides.
Then your fucked and surgery is inevitable.
Also, their freezing agent is a bitch.
Lol it isn't a big deal. I got mine done.
Also you're most likely a troll after saying "Is it ok to have sex while recovering"
In less your going to be thrusting your toe in to your gay lovers butthole then no.
This isn't Facepunch M.D - ask your bloody doctor, that is what you pay him for.
Or, in Scotland, what you don't pay him for.
UPDATE!: So, two days ago i went for the surgery, i had to wake up pretty early because i had to soak it and apply this odd cream based anesthetic to my toe. So after all that jazz in the morning i finally arrive at the hospital. Me and my mother (I'm only 16 so i needed a parent/gaurdian to be there with me). We go to check in and are directed to the waiting room. So we sit in the waiting room for about 10 minutes and some nurse calls me to sit in this prep room. She takes my blood pressure and weighs me for reasons i don't know. Then I'm called into the room where they will actually do the surgery.
Now, when people say that the anesthetic hurts like a MOTHERHUMPER there not lying. For me, my toenail was ingrown on both sides so they stuck me with 3 syringes, one on the left, the middle part, and the right. Honestly, it felt like i was being stabbed and it felt like the needle was being drilled into the bone. Then finally the freezing started to take effect so my podiatrist proceeded to scrub my toe with a brush and soapy water; which i could feel at first but the freezing soon took care of that.
After the scrub he started the operation and whatnot, all i could feel was movement, no pain, just his hands and tools on my toe, the operation itself took about 15 minutes, easy stuff right? Well for now it was, so I'm put into a wheelchair and wheeled into this room with TV's. I'm given a drink and told that they need to watch me for a half hour. So I'm just sitting in this reclining chair watching the discovery channel while i try to block out Treehouse tv thats comin out of the TV next to mine. Then, a little tingle in my toe, then i realized "Oh shit here comes the pain". So i told the nurse and she gave me a little cup that contained 2 T3's (Tylenol 3). She said: "Dr.whatshisnuts told me to give you these specifically because your case is pretty bad." So, I'm wheeled down the the ground floor and put in the car, i put my foot on the dash so that i can keep it elevated so it wouldn't bleed.
Now the car ride home, that was NOT fun at tall. For anyone who lives in Winnipeg, you know that are roads are shit, especially Portage and the downtown area. So bumpy roads and cut up toes that bounce up and down don't really mix in terms of feeling good. So fast forward an hour and my toe is REALLY fucking hurting, and as soon as im about to go nuts from pain my mom comes home with my perscription of T3's. Now fastforward to today and i can finally put flat footed pressure with minimal pain. TL;DR Woke up early for surgery, freezing needles hurt, needed T3's, feeling better now.
i did it my self. i just cut a little slit near the ingrowing part, then i jut pulled the rest of it out. it didn't hurt. kinda like biting your nails but without any mouth.

I'm surprised you didn't get mugged for your Tylenol 3's. Those things have crack in them, you know.

Hurt?

Risky though.
I went twice. I didn't go to a hospital but just the general practitioner or whatever the fuck it's called.
First time they put a elastic band around my ankle injected Anesthesia on both side in my neves (that's what she told me). It didn't hurt at all for some reason, it just felt like something with injected creating some pressure. They asked me if it hurt after torturing my toe and i said i felt a little so they said it was OK.
In came the clipper, out came the ingrown nail, leaving like a narrow strip of nail in the center.
I had quite some scar tissue and puss came out of the wound (waited way too long) so they removed the nail bed with scissors and burned away the scar tissue deeper down with acid. My god that hurt so bad but i didn't cringe once! So then it was wrapped up ready to go i put on a my shoe, hopped on the back of the bicycle and went home. I did not feel a thing after, just the pounding of the blood in my foot.
The second time hurt more as they cut my nail beds again and the Anesthesia didn't work as well as last time, and the injection sorta hurt, but they had a fucking hot intern that made my day.
tl;
No pain first time. Pain the second time. Fucking hot intern made up for the pain.
When i was 13, i had a toenail ingrown so bad, it was leaking blood and pus for like 2 months and i was to lazy to get it fixed, until i was playing basketball, it tapped the floor a little, the toenail busted open and blood soaked my socks with pus.
So i decided to go to the doctor.
then he
inserted a shot to the bone in my big toe,
------------)
x )

there, then they shoved it UP the side of my toe to past the "knuckle" then the one that hurt bad, they shoved it in between the webby part of your toes to numb it.
Then he proceeded to take a knife, slit open the skin on both sides, WHILE ITS STILL ANESTHESIATING, pulled it back, cut the sides of my toenail off, then pulled out a nifty burning tool, burned (quarterized or something) the nerves so they didnt grow back, put that shit in a bandage and i was walking funny for like 3 weeks.
I remember about a year ago,I had a ingrown toenail on both my feet.I actually walked with it for 2 school weeks and it hurt like a motherfucker every step I took.I didn't even know what the hell was causing the pain at the time until I read this thread lol,but eventually I guess they got loose and broke off.I even had to start walking very slowly and taking small steps to ease the pain, and it made me look like a idiot.
Reading this thread makes me want to cut my nails so this doesn't happen to me :byodood:
god, you're such a pussy. i've had ingrown toenails on all four sides of my big toes. i fixed that shit with some manicure scissors and a bunch of tissues (cause there was blood everywhere :D). my toes have been fine for a year, the nails haven't grown back.

Four sides? And sorry i want it done by doctors like any smart person?

yeah, there's two sides on each toenail, two toenails. and i'd rather stay at home and do it myself instead of wasting money on surgery instead of a couple bucks for a pair of scissors.

Have fun with your gangrene.
But on a serious note, you can do it yourself if it isn't bad yet, but if you wait a couple months then don't. Plus if you do wait months and scar tissue is growing you will only fuck up your toe as scar tissue does not go away.
Oh hey man hi five that's what I've had THREE FUCKING TIMES.\

BLAM
Looks like you removed part of the nail with a mining pick or something.
And seems like i am having issues with my nail again. fuck you nail, i clipped you straight for so long already. :(
FYI 10 mm needles in your foot makes you want to slap a hoe but recovory is okay jeust dont cut it for like a year and get it infected... i blows asss
tell me about it.
they used siccors instead of a scapel and they had a chair that you layed on so i didnt see it but i swear i pulled 1/2 of the cussion out oif the chair
