OP misses the point by a few hundred miles. It's not the question of what worth an animal's life has over that of a human, it's the revulsion at the lack of humanity in the offender that enabled him or her to inflict pain on another living thing and [I]enjoy[/I] it. It's a scientifically consistent observation that most serial killers/rapists/psychopaths/sociopaths that are known today started on that path by torturing animals at a young age. I believe that it is in humanity's best interests to have such problems... corrected. If rehabilitation and correction is possible, make it happen. If not, the problem should be removed by other means.

For once OP, I'd say I'd agree with you (to a degree) Animals are all over the place, and have little to no inherent value to the whole picture of the world. Compared with the murder/assault of a human the 'cruelty' to an animal isn't close to the same. I think people get touchy about it because inevitably we do form strong connections with our animals, but that doesn't mean to say they're more worthy beings than we are, nor equals. People also have the ability to be cruel to animals, because on the outside they don't have the same emotional capacity as we do. This isn't an error on the humans side, but rather the animal's simple lack of conveyance of emotion. In turn, killing a rational and functioning human being for no reason is much more calculated, and savage. Also, if the case is that these acts form serial killers, why don't we try and rehabilitate them at an early stage in order to provide a better life for them and eventually a society as a whole, rather than acting rashly. Surely killing them from the off does not solve any problems, and if anything creates more.

To the serial killer, just because it is a sign of many serial killers doesn't mean the girl is definately one, you shouldn't catagorise people with mental illnesses if you've only observed one of many possible traits.
