Since the environment is made out of atoms, maybe we can have some super-realistic terrain destruction.
It is very nice and all, but through the whole video I had a feeling of 'Get to the point already.'
It seemed like all he was doing is showcasing capable technologies without ever mentioning any form of ever using it to its potential in any way.
It's like: Look at this god damn tree! Now look at my fucking tree! Look at this fucking rock! Now take a look at my ultra realistic rock! Look at all the fucking detail! Fuck yeah!
Looks awesome, lots of comments on youtube say it's a con though, anyone know why?

Because noone knows how it works and someone who has experience in computer graphics would think that this is impossible because it all doesnt seem to make any sense.
Loads of people know how it works and it makes total sense.

We're talking about Youtube here.

Notch just declared this a scam: http://notch.tumblr.com/
What.
This would be a huge graphics rush.
Plus these companies don't even make all their money from selling video cards to people.
Why would you need to develop better and better video cards if you can run infinite detail with what you already have, stupid?
/facepalm
You have no idea how computers work. Just stop trying.
Nice argument, you totally changed my mind about this.
Rating me dumb does not make you right. If you are so wise why won't you tell me where I'm wrong.
great now we just need to get out of our 1995 physics engines and were golden
Well, it is a scam.
They made a voxel renderer, probably based on sparse voxel octrees. That’s cool and all, but.. To quote the video, the island in the video is one km^2. Let’s assume a modest island height of just eight meters, and we end up with 0.008 km^3. At 64 atoms per cubic millimeter (four per millimeter), that is a total of 512 000 000 000 000 000 atoms. If each voxel is made up of one byte of data, that is a total of 512 petabytes of information, or about 170 000 three-terrabyte harddrives full of information. In reality, you will need way more than just one byte of data per voxel to do colors and lighting, and the island is probably way taller than just eight meters, so that estimate is very optimistic
Well obviously not ever game is going to be detailed enough where you can see dirt. I'm not an expert but his argument is since not every piece of dirt or tree is an individual it means this technology doesn't work. But thats only because they made the island so detailed that a hard drive wouldn't be able to store that information not because there technology sucks.
their whole presentation seems ridiculously unprofessional for what they're achieving, if they're not lying through their teeth that is
will call fake until tech demo of some sort
This does seem pretty sugar-coated, but I'm positive that this will be utilized with both this and polygons into one engine. Then again, we'll all have to wait for that SDK to come out and see if they weren't lying. I'm on the fence until then.
But the thing that pisses me off the most, is that everyone is taking Notch's side, because it's NOTCH. They have no other factual evidence than the information Notch presented, which to half of his followers are computer illiterate and half the stuff they read came out as a nice pile of, "What the fuck am I reading? Who cares, it's Notch, and Notch is a god."
Yea I mean youtube comments usually aren't made with logic in mind but god. All I hear is and I quote "notch said its fake" over and over.
I have faith in this, because you figure all it takes to make something amazing is a little thinking outside the box. You know everyone just jumps straight on the bandwagon to learning how to make stuff with current means of games development where as you got some people who stop, rethink and rebuild from the ground up... Just most aren't as erection invoking as this
