I'm technically an American citizen but I'm the most European/Liberal/Pacifistic/somewhat Anti-Americanistic guy you'll find. I haven't lived in America since I was a year old and was brought up a German with Danish-Swiss roots.
Being aware of where your ancestors came from and knowing why they founded the USA.
Knowing the many different cultures that the US are still made of and appreciating the will to coexist in the past, now and in the future.
Of course this is just a part of being American and everything we ever name will just be a part, but that's the great thing about it, the endless possibilities.
Just like a big part of being German is knowing the mistakes that have been made in the past.
I am from the former GDR area and history showed me the dangers of a single person dictatorship as well as the dangers of the dictatorship of a single party, the "working class" in my case.
I know the bad sides of living in socialism and the good sides as well, that's what makes me German.

In my opinion, those are the answers to "What does it need to be called an American?" and not to "What does it mean to be an American?"
