uhuh, you overclock, something that generates extra heat, and it is the PSU's fault.
It was the PSU's fault.
OP get OCZ, Corsair, Silverstone.
If you're on a tight budget, the Rosewill Stallion series is pretty damn good for the price
Corsair is a good brand
Coolermaster is another good one.
Also when you buy a psu, make sure to read the specifications to makesure the efficiency is atleast 80%.
And next time you smell something burning, open up the case after you shut down your pc, and smell where the smell comes from.
Cooler Master is shit tier
It was a "A Brand Power" power supply. Rated 450w, but probably put out 250w. Yes i am an idiot, i assumed the smell was just the graphics card getting hot.
I opened up the PSU, nothing visible is wrong, although Im not going to bother using it again. But the smell was definitely in there PSU when i opened it.
It mayy be also that it had 20A on the 12v, is that a bit low for an 8800?
Bingo.
P=IV
I = 20 , V = 12
P = 20*12 = 240watts

They lied.
hey funny hows it going
Antec :smug:
Antec :smug:
I got a Vantech PSU
apparently, the brand is owned my the manufacturing company that make Gigabyte MB's
it can't be that bad, can it?
We'll jsut wait and see when i finish putting my PC together.
Good PSUs:
- Seasonic.
- Cooler Master (Real Power series, Silent Pro series, GX series, DON'T GET eXtreme Power Pro they produce lots of voltage ripple and may cause instability).
- Thermaltake (Toughpower series).
- Corsair (HX series).
Okay PSU:
- Seventam.
Don't buy cheap shitty PSUs, lots of voltage ripple can wear out the VRM on your motherboard and kill it. Usually, ripples occur when close to full load.
Currently I'm using the Cooler Master GX 650 watt (52A single rail). It's really good and helped me get 3.7 GHz (3.5 GHz on old Topower PSU). The GX series can also go ABOVE the rated wattage (e.g. the 750 watt one can output around ~780 watt).
Did you post in general discussion on purpose, or did you not see the Hardware/Software section?
Stupid boy wrong thread
Kind of deserve it for overclocking.
Uh.
No he does not. Overclocking is a very good way to get the most out of your hardware, but only if done correctly.
Besides.... Doesn't the 4850 use more power than the 8800?
Apparently not, as the 4850 ran happily, even when OC'd to the max.
Oh, and for the bad spelling people, it is spelled Smoky, not Smokey.
Point is?
To obviously not use shitty PSU's.
