Where were you looking at prices, and where are you coming from? Check out buses aswell, because National Express can be real cheap

Coming from Liverpool, looking at Virgin trains. I'm pretty stupid when it comes to public transport but I figured virgin would be fairly cheap.
I'll take a look at the busses now; does anyone know whether day-travel tickets cover all of England or just certain parts?
If I can manage to get Arriva busses all the way down I can get a day saver for £4.20 (hurrhurr 420)
