In other words the only SMG used in WW2 that was not directly based off the MP-18 was the Thompson and it had to be dropped halfway through the war because it was too costly to keep building. When you think of that it's really impressive. Here you have a gun that fathered an entire generation of children which spent the largest conflict in history fighting against themselves in playgrounds such as Berlin, Shanghai, Leningrad, Stalingrad, Budapest, Normandy, Anzio and it won against itself too. Even after all of that was over these kids kept popping up in hundreds of colonial conflicts all over the developing world before eventually becoming obsolete thanks to the assault rifle which is arguably the MP-18's grandson.
The Thompson had over twice the numbers of the m3 and the m3 had only officially been placed as the primary SMG at the end of 1944. Furthermore the Thompson on average, cost less than the *M1 GARAND.* American weaponry during the war was either notably more advanced or superior in quality to German, British, or Russian counterparts. All our guns were expensive. The Garand cost roughly 4 times the cost of other standard infantry rifles. The BAR cost usually somewhere around double. The Thompson varied widely as it originally cost 4 times what it did by the end of the war. Despite what your M3 article suggests, the Thompson WAS the American SMG of the war. The Grease gun was an afterthought. The US gov WANTED to replace the Thompson, but they couldn't come anywhere close to it. They couldn't even get soldiers to surrender their M1A1 Thompsons. Or even if they did, the American soldiers would dump the Grease gun in favor of MP-40 or even MP-38 SMG's from Germans. The gun was decent enough, but it was NOT a primary weapon in the European theater. It was however used in the Pacific theater and even then the troops were not happy with it.
Fix'd.
Does that guy in the video really have to keep saying Benelli? Ye gods it's annoying.
Well when it comes to the XM8, you can just show them this: It's truly a lovely firearm, and augments the military's don't ask, don't tell and gender diversity policies.
Reminds me of
76)RPD "Handheld Machinegun of Degtyaryov" In a way the RPD is a further development of the DPM. It incorporates a very similar action to that of the belt-fed DP variant which was essentially scaled down for the smaller intermediate 7.62x39mm SKS and AK-47 bullet. Interestingly this design actually predated the AK-47, being designed and manufactured in very small numbers towards the very end of WW2. However full-scale production didn't begin until the 1950's. In function it is a simple, belt-fed, fully-automatic-only support weapon in an intermediate caliber. The use of the lighter AK bullet meant that it was extremely light, even by LMG standards. It feeds from 100 round non-disintegrating links which are typically housed in a drum mag. Like all soviet weapons it was designed to be simple to mass-produce, easy to use and highly reliable. Also like so many other soviet firearms it soon spread to satellite states and was swiftly adopted in other countries such as Poland, Pakistan, Bulgaria, Albania, China, Cambodia, Laos, North Korea and Vietnam which used it as a squad support weapon to compliment existing stocks of AK-47 and SKS rifles. Indeed countries such as China, NK and Egypt made their own local variants as well. But there was a bit of a hitch. Because it fired an intermediate round and in particular one with somewhat little range it had trouble catching on. The gun simply didn't have the reach to be a really good support weapon, that and back then the concept of a belt-fed gun in an intermediate caliber while convenient wasn't taken all that seriously. The short range was the primary reason why it was eventually replaced in Russian service with the PK and later the PKM. Other countries such as pretty much all of eastern Europe followed suit as well. China no longer uses it, although they do still manufacture them for export. But that doesn't mean that no one uses it. In fact it's still very popular, particularly in conflict zones in Africa. It's used by the Congo, Angola, the Central African Republic, Tanzia and Togo. That is on top of Egypt which still manufactures and uses it. So there are millions of these things left over in European and Asian arsenals, a number of scattered countries that use them (such as North Korea which still makes them too) and then there's the fact that it pops up in large numbers in pretty much every brush war in Africa and the Middle East. Overall quite impressive for what some people consider to be a "failed" design. It's impossible to estimate exactly how many were made but at the very least that number runs in the millions.
Yay! more 7.62 weapons

Prismatex, how did your V5 get banned, but not this one? :buddy: Not that I want you banned, I'm just curious. Also, I watched a very informative documentary on the military channel 2 days ago; I never knew that the M16 used to suck balls before the A1 update. Apparently it jammed all the time and was extremely unreliable in Vietnam.
Actually it was due to the different powder in the 5.56 rounds and the fact nobody cleaned it.
I thought it also had something to do with the receiver that made it jam a lot... or maybe I'm just dumb. :buddy: Though, I remember the soldiers complaining about one part or another being made out of plastic instead of metal.

In fact if they had just cleaned it they wouldn't have had any problems. And no, there were no parts that were made out of plastic instead of metal.

Okay, the plastic stock must have been what I heard. The soldiers they featured has stories about how 9 of the M16s by this squad jammed in a single fight and nearly got them all killed. Sheesh.
The rifle was designed to be used with bullets containing stick powder, which burns pretty clean and with stick powder the gun was pretty reliable and didn't need cleaning very much. The military used ball powder instead which burns a bit dirtier so it fucked the no need for cleaning thing it had going on.
Bean-O could you do an article on the Vickers Machine Gun.
Bean-O could you do an article on the Vickers Machine Gun.
Covered under #27, the Maxim although there are a number of differences between the Vickers and Maxim.
knowing all you gun enthusiasts are in here, figured I'd ask: What's a good starting handgun, something to look into? I don't know where I'll be heading in the future and some form of protection is always a good thing. Looking hopefully for a concealable pistol / revolver that's relatively easy to maintain and not too far over 1k. There's a lot of people saying that the Colt 1911 is amazing etc and I've heard all about it, but the barrel is (I think) five inches which hurts it in my purposes. I'm not looking only for a concealable weapon though - just something for general protection. A bunch of shit has happened to my family recently that makes me realize how fucking nuts some people are. up to this point I've fired only a Glock as far as pistols go, a .22 rifle, and an M14 Don't think of me as some kid that's hot and ready to pull the trigger on some fucker because of traumatic events, I know what I'm doing with most firearms and I know how to use them safely. Just don't know anything about the gun market.
How about a smith and wesson night guard in .38 special?

Okay, cool, you make thread after thread telling people specifically IN THE TITLE how much you love cock. You don't have to bring it to every thread there is on the forum. Just because I'm not homosexual does not make me a homophobic for fucks sake. You don't see me making thread after thread and post after post about my sexuality. (Which you honestly don't even know what it is, so stick a shoe firmly in your mouth.) And back to the thread. That's a quote from the website the picture came from, making fun of the looks of the XM8.
