Yes it's the ultimate rifle. So much so that only South Africa uses it. -.-.
Do people bother to read this thread or what?
The NTW-20 isn't widespread enough in use and it hasn't been around long enough for it to cement a place in this thread. Also champ, anti-materiel rifle, not sniper rifle.
Some pseudo-bad news folks. I'm going to Sacramento with my brother for 3 days so may or may not have the ability to make updates for 3-4 days. I don't know if I will have the necessary internet access.

You just like it because it looks like that stupid sniper rifle in Halo.
62)Colt Army

Around 1860 Colt's Navy revolver (although it must be noted that both the Navy and Army designations were actually created by collectors) was pretty successful. But Colt wanted to take it and make it better still.
One of the problems plauging the Navy was the caliber. It wasn't exactly piss-weak and given the medicinal practices of the day if you took a solid hit you were a deadman either way. But it still had about the stopping power of a .380 ACP. Ideally, if you have only 6 shots, you want a guarantee that if you hit someone with that one shot their ass will go down and stay there. The solution was to take essentially the same frame, beef it up a bit and rechamber it for .44 caliber. It was still a loose powder, bullet and percussion cap ordeal. The only convenience offered in this regard was a pre-set ammount of gunpowder in a paper cartridge but of course that exised for the Navy as well.
Another innovation sought to fix a recurring problem of jamming. The rod built in under the barrel that packed gunpowder into the cylinders would occasionally pop loose because of the recoil and jam imto the cylinder, blocking it from rotating. That issue was fixed with a new "creeping" loading lever that functioned on a cam interface. Another distinguishing feature was a round barrel, as opposed to a hexagonal one.
So essentially we have a further improvement on a popular bit of technology.
The best part of the whole deal was that here we have a newer and better gun intoroduced in 1860. The timing is simply perfect. In 1861 as we all know the Civil War broke out and everyone started buying up guns. Naturally US army bought 125,000+ of the things. It still had the commendable accuracy of a Colt (50-100 yards whereas a musket could to 50 tops), it was lighter than a rifle, it held 6 times the ammunition and now it had power to boot. They were even issued with an attacheable shoulder stock. So like any gun of the era it proved itself on the battlefields.
Also like any gun of the era its popularity continued to grow after the fighting was over. It followed manifest desitny across the plains (at least in the hands of those who knew how to use it). Like the Navy it faltered when self-conatined cartridge guns were introduced although they were sometimes retrofitted for the new, significantly handier ammunition that could actually be reloaded mid-battle.
Originals are quite sought after today. Also like the Navy a number of replicas and the necessary ammunition supplies are still available for recreational shooting.

but it looks liek teh 1 on halol so it must b t3h best!
If we are going for game sniper rifles, you need the one from Killzone 1, that's the best I swear, kills anyone in 1 :v:
Seriously.
I've never heard of the NTW-20 so I'll presume its newish. It looks the part, however is it actually any good?
New? It was developed in the 90s.
Melts when you spray hairspray on it and the mag randomly falls out at any given moment. Yea, really fantastic.
yeah our british armed forces sure know how to pick 'em

Hey, the 90's aren't that old.
:(
Ok this might be a bit stupid, but I have a question.
I'm 15, and I'm going to get a hunting license soon. I'll hunt small game until I reach 18. I've always wanted to buy a gun when I reach 18 for target shooting. I want to buy a k98. My question is, would the k98 be a good gun to use for hunting too? If it is, I could have a gun for both hunting and target shooting.
I haven't read the old thread, but I've checked the list.
How about the Webley? Did you do that already?
EDIT: Oh wait, you have.
How about any of the Ruger revolvers?
My Grandfather gave me a Ross MKIII, but I'm too scared to fire it. The bolt action is so fucked on them. I'm scared of it flying back and killing me.

Yeah, but the cartridge is pretty overkill for small game. Your money though I guess.
Why does every kid and his dog all seem to want to avoid getting something in .22 for their first gun, especially a target gun? Like as if it makes them a pussy or something -.-
I love my Anschutz .22 target rifle.
[editline]08:34PM[/editline]
It's actually my favourite gun.
Because shooting old WWII rifles at the range while other kids are shooting .22s makes you feel badass.
Naw, but large calibers probably aren't the best when it comes to first guns. Though they are extremely fun to shoot.
Me, I'm saving up for a Mauser. I mean yeh, it is a big caliber, but I want to see how it competes against the Mosin Nagant firsthand.

From what I've read and heard, it's popular today among hunters. It's accurate, so it should work.
If you get one, try to move up to bigger game since a full sized rifle round seems like overkill for small game.
SKS is also good for hunting. It makes a nice bush gun, especially for its price.
I don't see any articles for the K31 or the m96 Swedish Mauser anywhere itt
you're going to have to fix that bro, they're practically perfect guns

By the time I reach 18 I would have already used a shotgun for atleast 3 years.

Yeah ofcourse I'm going to use it against big game.

Is K98 going to be a cheap or expensive weapon to buy? And what about the ammunition?

it's no competition, mauser actions are a thousand times better than mosin actions
the mosin nagant is a piece of shit; any and every gun is better than the nagant

you can get a K98 for like 300 dollars (might be more now though, but not over 400)
ammunition is cheap, relatively (for now)

But there are still copies being made, right?
But there are still copies being made, right?
what do you mean
if you're talking about mauser actions, that's pretty much what all modern bolt action guns are based off iirc

You said that I shouldn't use it since it's a historical weapon that belongs in a museum and shouldn't be used for hunting. I asked if they're still making k98s.

oh, yeah before I edited it
I think Mauser still makes ceremonial guns for the Bundeswehr and some other rifles based off the K98, but take that with a big grain of salt; besides, that's like asking if they're still making the original Battleship board game.
oh, yeah before I edited it
of course they aren't, why would they
So they don't make any replicas of mausers? Not even in different calibers?

I like the Nagant, but it's the only weapon I've fired from that era, besides a 1911. It's cheap to shoot, powerful, and easy to clean. I know the Mauser is better, but they'reb oth the same. Cheap, large, and clean.
Now that I think about it, one of those Colt M4 22...Or whatever they're called, would be nice. Only about six hundred bucks.

they're Mausers and are probably similarly designed but you're really splitting hairs; do you just want to hunt with a K98 for gimmicky reasons? You do know that there are a shitload of different modern hunting rifles to choose from, right?

buy a k31 and you'll never look at that nagant the same way again
I went shooting pistols for the first time the other week. Until then I'd only shot larger rifles/shotguns on some occasions with my girlfriend's uncle.
Shot an HK 9mm squeeze grip. Bear with me, I don't know much about guns. You have to squeeze the grip to release the trigger.
Some Ruger 22 (once again, I have no idea).
and a third that I don't remember, it's modeled after a Glock, but it's not a Glock. Guns really aren't my forte.
