World War 2 was almost an extension of the previous World War, and I think at that particular time in history is the only time when a war of such a scale could be carried out without the complete and total annihilation of civilization. Because of Nuclear Weapons, it would be less of a World War and more of a brief nuclear exchange followed by millions of dead people.
That being said, the only way one could think of a global-scale war being started without everyone getting nuked would be zombies. Which would be awesome.

it's going to be over fresh water. while i know it doesn't seem like that big of a deal now, the world is running out. once it gets down to a very small amount, countries are going to start fighting over it. its much more important than oil because humans can survive without oil, but we need fresh water to live. yes, we can always purify salt water and drag down icebergs but that costs a shit ton of money. fresh water is also needed for growing food and other... stuff.

desalination costs way too much money and energy, especially on a global scale. its when countries start spending all their money on purifying water that it becomes a really big problem.
