Came to fp when I was 12, 8 years ago. Had just gotten into pc gaming, specifically source engine games. Somehow found my way into the last free version of gmod, and by extension into facepunch forums. The smartness system dramatically improved by typing habits in all aspects of typing (forum posts, texting, chatting in games). FP even got me into level design.
Even though I don't play gmod anymore (more or less due to my displeasure with the saturation of TTT and other games), I return for news (gaming and otherwise), and for all the other interesting discussions that occur here.
I love this place. If it were to suddenly vanish, my mobile data usage would drop dramatically.
Very seldom does a day go by I don't browse FP. It's kind of crazy to think I've been here for 7 years and haven't thought of leaving once.
I've been on here since high school. Its been so long. I check every single day too.
I remember getting into rating wars with people, those were the days.
I remember when you had to be rated something at least twice for it to show up. I would rate myself on my notable posts to see what people thought of what I said or made, in a self-help sort of mindset.
Back when you could rate your own posts, that is. Was kinda silly when I think about it.
I miss bad reading, though.
I actually miss the days when something pulled the whole community together and had like 7000 people in one thread, such as the Portal 2 ARG, E3 press conferences, ya dun goofd thread etc. The last thing in recent memory that did that was JLAW nudies.
remember 2005?

the constant "Um do u know u mispelled spell?" threads in GD
Facepunch is probably the reason I don't act like an inbred 11 year old on forums and through text communication.
Facepunch and the fact I'm no longer 11.
I remember lurking here in 08 and thinking to myself "wow this place is shit" looking at the Gmod section until I saw the fallout 3 section (I miss the sub forums :( ). I created some account I can't remember now and holy fuck I was fucking terrible at 13. Glad I didn't continue with that account because holy fuck.
This account still has some posts early on which make me want to punch myself really hard in the guts, but I like to believe I am a better person & poster today because of this place. The ratings, members, variety and flagdog really makes this place stand out from the rest for me. Hopefully Facepunch lasts many more years from now.
I first got into Gmod in the early release version. I think version 5 or 6. At this time the model addons and mapping was really starting to take off. At this early teenage age I was built with the desire for custom content in most Valve games. By the way, Valve was one of the few developers who catered to the development of custom content and I fed on that stuff. I actually remember joining Facepunch at my cousin's house because you had to in order to download things people posted. That was one monumential summer. In those early days I witnessed a much smaller, yet sizable community built around that mod. I remember getting into the actual forum community as a map developer. I liked to create maps of varying complexity and architecture and just mess with the HL2 engine in Gmod. Playing online was also a blast and I hosted a server on and off. If I am not mistaken, I believe Garry visited the server at one point.
Famous in the forums were the $!_!JAY!_!$ and Fryboys of the early days. Famous by their reputation, the forums were flodded by immature, or overdone poses, yet hilarous. Back then Facepunch had a rating system for submissions. I think it was from 1-10. Fryboy was known to rate everything 1/10; just watch the Wolfer's TAOG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mw4Ob3JCdg&list=UUEP1JlZM4x2weGgUJmofTPQ. These videos bring back a lot of nostalgia!
Also a unique aspect of the forums I remember was that punishment entitled you a position on the public banned user list. I can picture it in memory, a link at the top of the forums titled BANNED USER LIST. I spent countless times viewing that list with the purpose to not replicate any of the wrong actions. Also to see hilarous ban reasons such as the harry potter fanfic ban. I think that is somewhere http://i.imgur.com/GO6xw.png.
Anyway, the forum has come a long way and there have been many phases I have been able to lurk through. I was mainly active in the 2005-2007 years and started to fall off as a lurker, primarily because I was too lazy to purchase a new computer to keep up with gaming demands to run Gmod and hammer.
This is what nobody wanted to see: (image courtesy wikipunch)

I wish I would have taken screen captures of some of the stuff back then. I remember Garry had a hidden directory under garry.tv/img with funny images and a lot of early facepunch recorded history, also quite hilarous. I wonder if that stuff still exists.
This is probably the most common thing I've heard about Facepunch, and I think that's a really cool feature for the forums.
Facepunch helped my spelling/grammar dramatically, but that was a product of the since removed smartness system.
I was a long time lurker until I made my account and I stayed ever since. Facepunch and to an extent garrysmod got me interested in filmmaking and now I am lucky enough to go to a good film school. Thanks Facepunch.
I'm afraid to admit that this shitty internet forum has influenced me more than my fucking parents (loser ahoy) over these past 5 years.
Many, many years ago I had Garry on my MSN list. He was rude.
i love you guys
True veteran facepunchers remember when the forum was tan coloured and every ban was permanent.
began lurking 09-10
still embarrassed and too lazy to go back and snip my dumb 12 year old posts
it's a shame because i'm still a bit of a shitposter now tbh

like that time i took off in that iPhone 6 thread and in the GMF
ugh
It really is hard for me to believe that I've been on FP for almost 1/3 of my life. Made good friends, had people irritate me, even ended up witha Fianceé through FP.
Came here for Gmod, stayed for the community
Oh god, has it been this long already?
I was late for the party. Facepunch introduced me to the glory of creating your own computer specs, DotA 2, and the news media.
I joined when I was 9, I'm 16 now.
Spending the last bit of your childhood on a forum that emphasizes not being a jackass really shapes a person, until around this year, I've had commitment issues because I cared too much about what people thought of me.
(Then I got a bunch of really accepting friends and my self confidence is higher than ever right now.)
I mainly browse Sensationalist Headlines so that I can brag about stuff that happens before any of my friends know about it. I also hang around the Garry's Mod posing thread but I can't pose for shit. When I first joined these forums, I immediately asked for a copy of Minecraft. Needless to say, I got banned the following hour of my post. Ripperonis. After that incident, I started to realize the value of these forums, and so I threw the old, sluggish lifestyle of begging for Minecraft away.
Same here. Facepunch used to be the place where i escaped to and chatted with people that had similiar interests and problems as i did.
Also where did the Furry board go?
It feels weird to get sentimental over a forum, but honestly I'd be lying if I said FP didn't have some importance to me. Hell, it's pretty much my main social outlet right now.
I was like 12 when I joined and I stuck around in the Gmod section. I had just come back from making myself look like an idiot on another forum and kinda wanted someplace else to talk about Gmod. I found FP and after lurking for fucking ever I finally nutted up and made an account. Because of that, I know my best online friend ever and have been friends with him for years. There was some stupid drama stuff I got a part of too, but as years went on I got better at not taking that stuff so seriously. Going on here and on 4chan kinda helped me get a little better at dealing with people and not taking stupid things as seriously.
For awhile I had gone to Tumblr instead of any other forum, but the nature of that site eventually really got to me. Now I go here at least a few times a day, and I have a lot of friends in WAYT and some from the General Games Discussion section. The community is generally pretty good, good enough to make the shitty times not so memorable.
I guess in short, even with some of the gripes I have, I cannot help but love this place. I hope most of you guys are having a good life right now, and I hope to make more friends off here as time goes on.

Had him on Skype. Didnt dare message (or call him)

Also, in my experience, people "god I hope you never get a police job" or "you're fucking retarded" and then again along the lines of "I hope you never get a gun"
all turned out false. Fuck you FP, but I love you.
I've been on FP for quite a long time. It's just an internet staple for me, like facebook.
I can't imagine it being gone <3

I miss the days of tricking people to type in LOL, OMG, WTF, etc so that the Autoban would nail their ass.
Especially when me and WolfeR posted new episodes of TaOG and people would quote it. Then get banned.
