Did you have to do any modification to get those handguards on your AK? I'm about to buy a set of Beryl handguards myself, wondering how easy they are to attach.
Late response, had no internets yesterday. All it takes is to dremel off these bits: You'll have to see how much you need to get rid of by yourself, to ensure a snug fit. Though, the entire thing hugs the barrel nicely from the inside and has a tough springy part that pushes against the forward retainer.
I know someone has to feel me.
Yeah, these rails that the retainer slides into are way too short.

An upper handguard heatshield might look neat on that.
For some reason i only like tactical AKs in 5.45. I like my 7.62 AKs in a more traditional layout
tastefully done tactical 7.62 AKs remind me of PMC AKs AKs with skeletal stocks, daniel defense rail sets, forward mounted Eotechs that kinda stuff
For some reason i only like tactical AKs in 5.45. I like my 7.62 AKs in a more traditional layout
Well its technically an AK74 because of the flash hider, lower handguard and stock. Its just it came with this 7.62 magazine and I haven't gotten the 74 ones yet.
That's a 7.62 AK gas block though [editline]28th October 2014[/editline] Are there 5.45's with that?
Well its technically an AK74 because of the flash hider, lower handguard and stock. Its just it came with this 7.62 magazine and I haven't gotten the 74 ones yet.
thats an AKM tho the stock isn't a 74, and the handguard is an AKM type not to mention the gas block as herf mentioned, receiver set, and grip [editline]28th October 2014[/editline]
That's a 7.62 AK gas block though [editline]28th October 2014[/editline] Are there 5.45's with that?
no, 5.45 isn't compatible with that gas block type
Well its technically an AK74 because of the flash hider, lower handguard and stock. Its just it came with this 7.62 magazine and I haven't gotten the 74 ones yet.
Technically it's an AKM, not an AK74. That flash hider isn't a real flash hider (certainly not an AK74 flash hider), the lower handguard can be seen on both AK74s and tacticool AKMs so that part's irrelevant, and the stock is definitely an AKM stock. Also that's an AKM front sight, not an AK74 one. Nothing about this gun says "AK74" Unmodified AKM [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/80/AKM_automatkarbin,_Ryssland_-_7,62x39mm_-_Arm%C3%A9museum.jpg[/t] AK74 for comparison [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fa/Ak74l.jpg[/t] (pics thumbed, click for biggur)
Oh you're right its an AKM then. I wonder why it came with a 5.45 stock and muzzle brake (which I changed out). The current stock on it is from a real polish ak74
Do you have a picture of it in its stock unmodified form? Also the stock you have on it in that picture is still an AKM-style stock. AK74-style stocks look like the one in the AK74 pic I posted.

-snip, quoted post changed-
Messing around with a GHK AK - Looks kinda cool in this layout.
is it just me or is there something really weird about the pistol grip? like, a lot of space between the end of the receiver and the start of the grip or something. [editline]28th October 2014[/editline] that pistol grip seems really far forward
mag has to rock forward can't use vert grip too far back or else you can't detach/attach mag
Nah man, i think he meant the actual pistol grip, not the vert grip. I kinda see what he means, yours does look like its slightly more forward than the reference AK
hes talking about the one attached to the receiver.
That's a 7.62 AK gas block though
easiest way to tell between an AKM and AK74 is gas block, but keep in mind the early AK74 gas block looked exactly like the AKM's this was right when the 74 released and some AKM parts were modded to take 5.45 though
Just noticed that. The pistol grip is a few mm forward than the other guns. Weird...
And some AKMs were almost impossible to tell apart from an AK47 by visuals alone when the AKM was first introduced. I don't typically go by "first runs", I go based on what became standard.
Nah man, i think he meant the actual pistol grip, not the vert grip. I kinda see what he means, yours does look like its slightly more forward than the reference AK
oh duh
Definitely looks like the ridge the extends out on the pistol grip has been sanded off, not that the pistol grip is too far forward.
Nope, grip's definitely too far forward.
Nope, grip's definitely too far forward.
i noticed it too, it's at least half an inch too forward. Thats really weird.

Not the best photo but here's what I have so far. Swapped the crappy plastic stock for a crappy wood one (more on that in a second), painted the grips, did some light weathering on the body, shimmed the bipod, removed the flash hider, and added a dummy belt. Once I get the replacement flash hider it will be good to go externally, although I am considering buffing it with some graphite and fine sandpaper for that heavily used look. Anyways, about the wood kit, if anyone's considering buying the wood kit being sold for the A&K PKM, don't bother. It's not a wood stock and bakelite pistol grip and handle grips, it's all wood, which as far as I know is not accurate to any PK variant in the world. Even if you just use the stock like I did, I found that it's a good 3mm shorter vertically than the plastic one (what the fuck?) so the stock buttplate sticks over the top and doesn't fit without modification. Even after filing and bending to get it to fit, then you have to deal with the ugly, awful appearance of the wood, with weird striping that makes no sense and a shiny, almost lacquered finish. Terrible. I sanded it to remove some of the finish, then rubbed layers of Vallejo Smoke into it with a sponge. I then took the black plastic grips and painted them with some Vallejo acrylics before washing with Smoke for that mottled bakelite look. I would heartily recommend tracking down real stock and grips and modifying them to fit, but it seems that with the popularity of the PKM most sites are out of stock on those components. Anyways, that aside, I'm pretty happy with how it's looking externally and it seems to be a very nice piece. I'll post more once I've had a chance to rip out its guts and then test outside.
