I've just started getting into Star Trek, I've been mainly watching Voyager and TNG and enjoying them both. I've tried watching the Original series and Enterprise but I can't get interested in them. The Original is a bit too corny for my tastes. Is Deep Space Nine any good? I haven't seen much of it yet.

DS9 gets great S3 onward.

Avery Brooks is awesome, too. Incredible in his role as Ben Sisko, still say he's my favorite captain. And if you watched The Captains, you'll enjoy it more because Avery Brooks is almost completely severed from all modern conventions of sanity. [editline]1st February 2012[/editline] DS9 also has the charm of shedding quite a bit of light on the Star Trek universe as a whole. Lots of data about Starfleet and the Federation, as well as the Klingons. The Dominion War is an awesome historical parallel (combining elements of both world wars), and has some really kick ass fleet battle scenes. To round it all up, the fact that the episodes are not disjointed, "adventure of the week"-style affairs is just so much better.

Out of all the Star Trek series DS9 is probably my favorite.

Have anyone got the TNG Next Level yet? It was released in some countries january 30th right? I would like some comments on it if you did get it. In Sweden it's released February 12th so i have to wait.

I want that as a uniform in Star Trek Online

Quick question from a Star Trek newbie, do the colours of the uniform mean anything, such as rank or job? or is the colour a preference thing?

In the original series, Yellow seems to have been command/bridge crew, while blue was science, and red was security and engineering. In the Next Generation and onward, Red signified Command, yellow were support officers (Engineering and Security come to mind), while blue (or that greenish color in Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and the later Star Trek movies) are Science and Medical. I think Enterprise used the original series' color coding for the rank piping.

So, speaking of Deep Space Nine, I've been toying with an idea for awhile and I wanted to see if any of you guys had any ideas regarding it. See, I see the Dominion War as an allegory for World War II, and I'm trying to figure out if it's just me or if it was intended that way. I mean, first we've got the Cardassians, representing the Central Powers and Germany in World War I. They fight a devastating war with the Federation that ends with the collapse of the Cardassians as a major power in the Alpha Quadrant, and the establishment of the DMZ. Then, the Dominion comes out of nowhere a few years later (representing Japan), and allies with the Cardassians, who, like Germany, have been recouping their losses and rebuilding under the rule of a charismatic, complex ruler (Gul Dukat, representing Hitler). Meanwhile, the Federation has come down on some hard times, with Wolf 359, the whole "warp travel destroys the universe so now we can only travel at Warp 6 except if we're being shot at" thing, repeated Borg attacks, a few skirmishes with the Romulans and the Klingons. All of these stand for the Great Depression, and the social woes expressed early on in Deep Space Nine represent the same conflicts going on in America just before their involvement in the war. At the same time, I've having some trouble deciphering the role of the Romulans and Klingons in all of this. I'm tempted to say that the Klingons are Europe, an occasional foe of the United States, but in the end, the nation's strongest and best ally. The Romulans show as Russia, a relatively enigmatic and secluded nation that covers a vast swathe of land and has been subject to more than a few internal conflicts over the past few years. However, it can also be said that the Federation represents the Allies as a whole, with Europe and America, and the Klingons being Russia (the Klingon civil war in TNG being the Bolshevik revolution). I'd rather stick with the Klingons as Europe and Romulans as Russia bit, though. Anyway, the Klingons and Romulans both make preemptive moves to take out the Dominion (start of the war prior to US involvement), but the action doesn't really ramp up until Dukat allies Cardassia with the Dominion (Japan joining the Axis). The First Battle of Deep Space Nine, and its subsequent capture, then, represent Pearl Harbor. From there on, all the powers are aligned and the war rages for years until the final battles. However, this is where the drama of the series takes the higher position over the analogy, as the conclusion of the war and the actual conflict itself do not bare much resemblance to World War II, though I'm sure a few parallels could be made. The next set of evidence I have is the armistice, which, according to Star Trek Online, disarmed the Cardassian Military and reduced them to having a planetary defense force, with no offensive capability, instead relying on the Federation and Starfleet for protection (the turning over of West German defense to NATO, which is now represented by the Khitomer Accords). Then, we can make some Cold War analogies, with the Romulans representing the Warsaw Pact (particularly after Nemesis) and the Federation/Klingon Empire (composing the Khitomer Accords) making up NATO. So, uh, yeah. Go at it.

Just the occupation of Bajor and the cardassian work camps and all makes me think of WW2.

I just wish they had done something different with Dukat, didn't like him as much in the last few seasons. Same goes with the ending, it felt rushed, they should have used more episodes like they did with the first three episodes of season 2. But that goes for Voyager as well, there was so much left to be told, the relaunch novels are proof of that.

Got the Star Trek The Next Generation The Next Level today, and i gotta say WOW! It feels like watching a movie made in 2012, really good video quality!
