Something to with serial numbers of equipment being traceable back to the individuals using them iirc, either that or it's just to hide what it is they're using so the manufacturer stays a secret, or the object itself stays secret. I don;t know exactly.

Like Rain said, it's to prevent anyone from tracing it back to the manufacturer and/or supplier.
The few SOG images that exist always have blurred out attachments, faces etc.

Except they're terrible on ice and snow, at least in my experience. People were slipping and busting their ass all over base when it snowed, the cracks in the sole get packed with snow and it makes the boot pretty much useless. A guy in my class from Minnesota is the type who can go outside shirtless and slide on his stomach across the ice, but even he said he avoids snow and ice like the plague when wearing our boots.
I do look forward to wearing the suede ones when I get around to a shore duty, though.

I'll be honest, it doesn't really matter how good they look. An hour or two of them smoking the dogshit out of you over something petty and lecturing you about how expendable you are, and you're only going to look at them one way.
Meh, it's all just a dog and pony show. I was pretty disconnected from everything that was going on in boot camp, getting smoked and all that shit sucked but I knew it was going to end eventually. There was a few female RDCs I had to try my hardest to check out just using my peripheral, I was rocking boners despite the drugs in the eggs and whitey tighteys that shrunk to be 4 sizes too small trying to keep it down.
