It was stupid that District 9 didn't win shit. That was a fantastic movie. I'm also pissed that Inglorious Basterds barely won anything too. Hurt Locker was a good movie, but I didn't think it was the best movie of the year. Not by a long shot.
It didn't beat it though, just with some award. But really, all that matters is how much money a movie makes.
no. plenty of shitty films (such as Avatar) have been very successful money-wise, for no apparent reason.
Like what?
It's a historically based movie. What, do you want Brendan to use a book to melt a bunch of vikings and then fly to the moon?
I didn't figure there were fairies and crazy magical snake monster in Irish history
I didn't figure there were fairies and crazy magical snake monster in Irish history
There was in mythology, yeah.
But in the end Kells needs to be sacked and the vikings need to still be assholes. Because that's how it happened.
What did you expect to happen?

History and mythology are two different things, but mythology tends to make for a better movie.
There could have been more plot time spent on the fantasy shit that happened in the woods... Like when he goes to get the eye of that snake-thing (I don't want to chance misspelling its name and can't find it anywhere), I was expecting that to be more of an ordeal than a short little two-minute fight scene, after it was built up so much. I think it would've been better if there was more focus on the ordeals Brendan went through. It was a short movie anyway, so they could've just lengthened the more exciting parts of the story.
[sp]I think if he had to face more difficulties in getting this book written, it would have felt more satisfying that that was the extent of the ending.[/sp]
The Hurt Locker is as cliched as Avatar, THAT'S the funny thing.
A guy who plays by his own rules? Check
A black sidekick who just follows along even though he acts upset? Check
The young inexperienced guy? Check
The main characters do everything, including stuff they shouldn't even be involved in(sniping, trailing insurgents, clearing buildings- all by themselves)? Check
The beautiful young wife at home who is completely devoted to a guy who'd rather been with 'the men'? Check
The innocent child that the main character bonds with, his one display of humanity, which doesn't work out so well? Check
Anyone who has seen even a few war movies has seen everything in Hurt Locker before, just as anyone who has seen a few fantasy/sci fi/adventures has seen Avatar before. The only real difference is Hurt Locker is a director making a 'serious' movie, while Avatar is straight up escapist entertainment.

Remember that this movie was made for practically no money. A lot of stuff was cut for that reason, they did what they could with what they had. And they chose to tell a story rather than make an action movie.
[sp]What are you talking about, everyone he knew was slaughtered. How much more difficult can you get?[/sp]

I really think you're being horribly vague.
You could apply that kind of argument to any movie.
That's true, but his terribly vague statements are more common among movies than other terribly vague statements
Hurt Locker is essentially 30 or so climaxes strung together with dialog.

Good movie though
I would have liked Up to Best Picture.

Either you haven't seen The Hurt Locker, or you're just arguing for the sake of it. The Hurt Locker Was MASSIVELY different to avatar.

There's really no point in me saying anything if you're determined to think the movie was perfect

Bad reading.
He's saying Avatar was a big cliche, but so was the Hurt Locker. He's not saying they're similar, simply that they both have a lot of cliches.

Not really. All he actually did was simplify the character and say stereotype. I honestly saw hardly any cliches in that list.

I'm not saying I agree with him, I'm just telling that other guy what his point was.

He did a bad job of making that obvious. Plus almost all war films tned to be pretty cliche of each other.

At least it got Best animated(hell, I didn't watch it, yet). On the bright side, it didn't go to a certain movie FP hates the most.
