Look how many fat people there are in boat racing, car racing or horse racing. Almost none. Look at the elite F1 drivers - they're as fit as can be, and some maybe even fitter than elite football players. Comparing that to those who play esports - I wouldn't suggest that it is a requirement. To be honest though, why do people care so much?
Good physical health has been proven many times to relate to good mental health and motor skills. A healthy gamer is generally more alert and for longer periods of time than an unhealthy gamer.
So long as chess is considered a sport, then you can make the argument for competitive videogames by means of precedent.
Why does it have to be a sport? I don't understand the obsession with trying to categorising everything into predetermined boxes, why can't it just be it's own thing?
I like how no one in these debates never brings up the fact that Starcraft was (not sure if it still is) broadcasted on Korean TV and millions watched.
The only thing I saw was millions of people having fun then a women who sounds like highschool teenage boy going through puberty with some prom queen who can't handle her loss of youth making fun of them. Oh let's not forget the old farts who can't handle the fact they can't play football anymore.
I wish I could be there laughing with them just the term "esports" makes me laugh everytime I hear it
What makes Football, or Basketball, or even Chess any more real of a sport than an Esport? Because old people are familiar with it and have been raised to see it as such. That is the only difference.
The only real difference is that football and chess have been around for a long time and that the rules of those games at the competitive level never change, whereas video games are very dynamic and can be changed at a developer's whim. Despite that I still don't see why "esports" can't be considered a sport. Most starcraft pros spend upwards of 8 hours a day or more playing at Masters level, they immerse a damn good portion of their life to it. If that's not the dedication of a pro sports player I don't know what is.
For instance, racing planes, cars, horses, and so on, are all considered sports, but require little actual physical exertion on the part of the participant.
hahaha are you fucking joking? you are so wrong
eSports aren't "real sports" i don't give a shit what it's called. but that lady in red said "it's not a sport, it's a game". so soccer, football, baseball, rugby, cricket, etc. aren't games anymore?
I never said it wasn't a real sport, personally I don't care for eSports that much, but I see nothing wrong in calling it a sport.
sorry I meant that as a one sided argument towards all the people on the show.
I think the videogames are on par with chess, golf, darts, curling, and bowling when it comes to sports. they don't require a ton of physical training to compete in, but you still compete against other people. videogames can be sports, but not "action" sports, I guess.
Since when has HBO been an authority on sports?
the thing about it not requiring physical fitness or anything isn't really true, pro esports teams are more and more hiring fitness coaches and shit because unfit people that game all day burn out really easily, develop carpal tunnel, get fucked up legs and all that kinda shit. personally i think for something to be considered sport it just has to be fun and require skill. and lol at the star trek joke, and also lol at the dude right at the end who must have been like 100 years old. old people are so fucked hahaha [editline]20th December 2013[/editline] 'it's not a sport it's a game' is the stupidest thing you could ever say, every sport is a game, the only thing that makes professional sport different to a game is that it is professional
The way I see it is like this, just replace esports with chess and ask the question "is it a sport?" and you'll find out.
lol what. you must have no understanding of those sports if you think there is little exertion. f1 drivers have to be really really fit. it's pretty damn hard to drive a 200mph car at a maximum of 5g for 2 hours. neck muscles come under such ridiculous stress that the canopies have rests in them that are designed to be used at certain part of the tracks just so that the drivers get a brief chance to rest. back issues are also really common as a result of the strain
I would almost classify F1 racing as an extreme sport; like snowboarding, skiing, skydiving. (aka High risk sport.)
I'd say a sport is a game which involves strenuous exercise. A game does not. Ie football, tennis, are sports Gaming, Chess, Darts, are games. Edit : To the guy above saying you need to be trained to do it all day, fair enough, but there's physical training for almost any activity, doesn't make it more of a sport.
