smartness does nothing because there are countless ways to evade it, and any post that will go in highlights will likely be fully punctuated anyway.

Letting users vote which thread go in the highlights might be a good idea too.
Something along the lines of having a "like" (or similar) button, and once it gets clicked, say, 50 times, it gets put in highlights.
If there is a like button, they should still have to be approved by a mod or someone to make sure people aren't nominating dumb posts 'just for the lulz'
Users won't ever choose which posts get highlighted. It makes no sense, any system we make would either be too simplistic so only popular threads get approved or too over managed so threads have to be checked by a moderator anyway.
Here's another idea, how about letting users vote for the best post in a thread, as well as a best post selected by a mod. These would then be both displayed on the thread's highlight page.
This is so you have a best post selected by the mods and best post selected by the users. This is so there's at least 1 good post in the two.
It'll make the forum feel more like a forum, rather than an encyclopaedia.

How about, if a post gets a large amount (a different amount for each subforum) of positive ratings (agree/funny/winner/informative/artistic) then it gets put on a list for the mods to look at?
There won't be any automation, so don't bother suggesting it.

Which is for the best, because we would end up with either an index of Megathreads, or it will turn into Digg (ie same crap published over and over again).
