I think it was just meant as scary ambient noise. Still gives me the fucking creeps when I hear it though, don't even really know why but it just sounds really creepy.

It's such an extreme scream, but it keeps getting used for people in mild peril. When I hear that sound I think of someone having their flesh wrent.
