Nobody is going to pay anything because that's a stupid idea.
WHY is it stupid? You can call anything stupid. People will donate money to a server for stupid perks like end of round godmode, they wont pay me a dollar at a chance to MAKE more money?
People are just going to leak the password.
People are just going to leak the password.
I already thought of that solution The people who pay are emailed like an hour prior to the contest or something, and the password changes every time a new contest is held. And besides if they leak the password they are disqualified and I just made a dollar.
Just because it doesnt DIRECTLY say "You cant host a server and sell the password and host contests with cash prizes" doesnt mean its allowed
Yes it does. It's a contract.
Well I'm planning to have the server open 24/7, except for one 30 minute timeslot where it will be password protected, and users will enter the contest held in the 30 minute period for a dollar on a website, and the winner gets 15 bucks.
What's to stop someone from distributing the password for free?
What's to stop someone from distributing the password for free?
Well I'll have a list of players who payed, so anyone who joined who isnt on my list gets banned for 30 mins And the password changes everytime a new contest starts
Not trolling when I say this but, if you really do this it would make you a greedy bitch. Just sayin'.
Just make it steamid access only. That way only "registered" people can join. Also I can feel quite some people being jelly because op has a chance to make some buck
Not trolling when I say this but, if you really do this it would make you a greedy bitch. Just sayin'.
Your avatar is a trollface. If you ever start a sentence with "not trolling" nobody will believe you...
Valve couldn't give a fuck if they tried.
Gabe Newell will come to your house and sit on your computer. Trust me, I've had it happen before.
He doesn't sit on your computer. He sits on your lap while circle jerking over your head and squeezing anal excrement out of his wet, warm, hairy crease. And that isn't even the beginning.
One of two things will happen: Scenario 1 "Oh look, a server that charges a fee for the password. I'll pay for it. Share the password. Seems good." Scenario 2; IE "The Scenario Most Likely to Happen": "Oh look, a server that charges a fee for the password. Oh look, a server that doesn't charge. I'm going to go to the latter."
For his contests I would pay a dollar then tell everyone the password.
Guys you're not answering his question at all. OP: No, Valve don't give a flying fuck about whether you charge or not. Go for it.
any attempt to earn money from TF2 is completely illegal
This is the stupidest idea so far in 2011. Congratulations. Nobody is going to pay YOU a $1 for a chance to win $15 in a game that you claim involves "skill" Here are your flaws 1. You do realize some classes are stronger and better than other classes, no matter how good that player might be for his specific class. 2. As soon as you give out the password to someone that paid $1, they could just tell everyone what the password is and they will all enter for free. So you made $1 and about 30 people join. Good stuff. 3. You said that they pay $1 and yet you changed it to how much they pay? They would pay only $1, what if two people play? You pay that person $14 of your own money. 4. There are so many free servers, your server makes no difference. 5. People who pay for the perks is because THEY CAN USE IT IN GAME, and not just for one round. Please....think it's a new year, let's start it off right.
WHY is it stupid? You can call anything stupid. People will donate money to a server for stupid perks like end of round godmode, they wont pay me a dollar at a chance to MAKE more money?
Because people pay for shit like that because it's an established, popular server with many existing perks, a great community surrounding it, etc etc. People aren't going to pay for your thing. At most you'll get one or two IRL friends to do it, but that's about it. Sorry kiddo.
Valve doesn't care about jack.
Why would they?
Some people already did this, way better. It was called Prizefight and they even had a TV channel.
The best way to do this if you're not discouraged by all the people not reading the thread posting would be to start the server and then get a sort of community going first where you know you'll get players who are regulars etc. Then you could start the contest. You should also put in the OP that it's a contest thing and not that you will make a doller for every person that joins.
I'd just go to the server above your locked server, plus I filter out servers that are passworded. If there's nothing special about your standard server which it probably is then why would anyone pay extra just to join that server? You can earn money from other ways like extra features when in game, donation features, blah blah blah ect... But for your question- No Valve won't care unless you get very popular then they might think about it but that wouldn't happen.
Bad idea. Max server slot is like 32. When it's full, locked (pay to play), people will get pissed off that they spent a dollar and can't even play. The max you'll make is like $32, give or take like $10 before people realise they can't even play. Meanwhile your costs will be $15 a day that you're forking out for the competition and you'll be losing money so fast. If you decided to launch multiple servers to combat this, your costs will be like $15*(number of servers). Remember however that that $1 is not a recurring payment, and not everyone will buy into this. Let's assume that some people do however, it'll be just a few days before you run out of money and are forced to stop regardless of how you play it.

If he does get 32 people to pay 1$ each, the server will be 32/32. Then he stops accepting more contestants. That way he has 15$ for a prize and some money left for himself. And a dedi costs like 30$ a month(I'm not sure, haven't checked them in ages) so if the idea does roll, the op only gains, not loses. He will lose only if less than 15 people enter.
Well if you give me a dollar, and you win, you get enough money to buy 15 cans of paint. [editline]1st January 2011[/editline] Sooooo.....I can legally do this with no worries?
Something about gambling seems like a bad idea.
Well I'm planning to have the server open 24/7, except for one 30 minute timeslot where it will be password protected, and users will enter the contest held in the 30 minute period for a dollar on a website, and the winner gets 15 bucks.
What if they are already on the server? Do they just get to go for free? Flaws ahoy!
This idea sounds bad. Just install some goofy mods and let people play for free, kids love those sort of things.
And besides if they leak the password they are disqualified and I just made a dollar.
Actually, you should probably keep that in the prize for the other people playing fair. [editline]1st January 2011[/editline] Not a smart idea anyways though. I highly doubt people are going to play.
Its not empty, its free to join and play for 23.5 hours a day, and for one 30 minute session it locks down for those who payed to play for a chance at some cash.
Pfft, why would anyone pay to have 30 minutes of extra playtime? What a shit server.
