• Does Valve care if I sell the password to my server to players?

this is a retarded idea
I think its a good idea, especially if it got really popular he could offer better prizes, its only as stupid as gambling. They pay $1 and put their SteamID in, and get a chance at winning prizes. sounds fun depending on the game. I say go for it, people will pay and gamble if it is a professional service. If it looks like a 12 year old did it, thye wont trust you.
What if they are already on the server? Do they just get to go for free? Flaws ahoy!
Autokick.
Bad idea. Max server slot is like 32. When it's full, locked (pay to play), people will get pissed off that they spent a dollar and can't even play.
Technology isnt that dumb, you could easily refund someone if the server gets full between them paying and joining, or they have to use a web-based service to reserve their slot, and the website refuses payments when the slots are full.
1 dollar isn't much. I think it's an OK idea.
you'll get banned trust me i'm a doctor
don't listen to him he's lying! valve will hunt you down and get you arrested trust me i'm a marine biologist

Can we not derail the thread? Please and thank you.
I don't think that valve, of all people, would give a rats ass about one person selling a server. Now, if it was like a mass amount people selling servers, there would be a problem. I don't think anyone would buy a server, either.
Instead of attempting to say something witty, which is just stupid, or echoing what's already been said a thousand times in this thread, I'd like to present an interesting bit of information. Legally, you're not allowed to do this. You're not entitled to sell slots on a server through gains by password. However, to shadow the fact of the matter, no, no one will care.
Guys you're not answering his question at all. OP: No, Valve don't give a flying fuck about whether you charge or not. Go for it.
It doesn't matter if we actually answer his question or not, in about 1 week he will realise his idea is complete bollocks...he will then think of another idea which will be even worse, like paying to add him as a friend..but you have a chance to win $3...
OP, this is what is known as "gambling" It is illegal for minors in the US to gamble, and just outright illegal entirely in many other countries.
OP, this is what is known as "gambling" It is illegal for minors in the US to gamble, and just outright illegal entirely in many other countries.
Other than some deserted arab ones, where else is gambling illegal? Also it's not gambling. It's like offering a service with a chance to win a prize. That service is 30min playtime(sure it sounds silly, but in a legal sense it works as an excuse) Also people are selling slots on A LOT of servers so this is nothing different. I'd say OP, go for it. If the idea fails, oh well, you tried. If the idea rolls, well that's some profit. There's nothing to lose really.
Once one person buys the password, everyone who wants it has it. So no.
Well if you give me a dollar, and you win, you get enough money to buy 15 cans of paint. [editline]1st January 2011[/editline] What's "win" in TF2? Like only the top player on the winning team? Only the top player? The winning team? I wouldn't pay 1$ for a CHANCE at 15. Maybe 50. Sooooo.....I can legally do this with no worries?

What, why? If he does get 32 people to pay 1$ each, the server will be 32/32. Then he stops accepting more contestants. That way he has 15$ for a prize and some money left for himself. And a dedi costs like 30$ a month(I'm not sure, haven't checked them in ages) so if the idea does roll, the op only gains, not loses. He will lose only if less than 15 people enter.
He said it would be up 24/7 except for a 30 minute timeslot daily when people can play to win $15. Daily, that means he'd be losing $15 daily.
Bad idea.
So what would the contest actually be to win the $15?
No, the only thing they'd care about is that you're taking the time to sell your server password instead of buying things in the Mann Co. store.
Well I'm planning to have the server open 24/7, except for one 30 minute timeslot where it will be password protected, and users will enter the contest held in the 30 minute period for a dollar on a website, and the winner gets 15 bucks.
(User was banned for this post ("Reaction Image Macro" - Terrenteller))
What he is proposing is a mini-tournament. Why this is such as bad idea(except for where he's getting people which is NOWHERE) bewilders me. The technical aspects of this are trivial to say the least, and if I felt I had a shot at winning, why not?
Your avatar is a trollface. If you ever start a sentence with "not trolling" nobody will believe you...
The reason why my avatar is that is due to me not wanting to take the time to find a better one.
Because faces are not prevalent.

What guarantee do the players have that they'll even get paid? lol
WHY is it stupid? You can call anything stupid. People will donate money to a server for stupid perks like end of round godmode, they wont pay me a dollar at a chance to MAKE more money?
People donate cause those servers are well known communities that won't go away anytime soon due to their popularity. Their donations reinforce this guaranteed longevity.
By the same logic, if he doesn't pay up, some schmucks lose a dollar and no one ever enters again.
And how would new unsuspecting players know? Are the schmucks that were scammed gonna protest outside the server with signs? My point is there's a reason people pick the lottery instead of crap like Jim Blow's private drawing down at the gas station. It's cause there's guaranteed security that they'll actually get paid and this guarantee isn't established by what if scenarios, it's set in stone from the start.

You logic seems to be slightly flawed. [editline]2nd January 2011[/editline] I think you need to question the authorities a bit more, whoever they are. Nothing is set in stone and the minute the leaders fail, everything is chaos. [editline]2nd January 2011[/editline] And sooner or later him and his server will become infamous and no one will play on it anyway.

I'm referring more to how people think and how they invest their money. People are more comfortable donating toward a community server to be entered in some prize drawing than a no-name server.
Ah yes, you are correct, people in general don't do logical comparisons as they'd rather go with their natural instinct and choose the "safe" option. [sp]not sarcastic[/sp]
Ah yes, you are correct, people in general don't do logical comparisons as they'd rather go with their natural instinct and choose the "safe" option. [sp]not sarcastic[/sp]
When it comes to money? Absolutely. Maybe you're too young to know from personal experience, but truth is, people tend to be vary cautious when spending money with strangers and no-name companies or in this case, servers. People don't go into logical calculator mode and plot every possible assumption behind a materialistic exchange. They set up paypals, and if they get a fucking box of cereal when they ordered an xbox they file a complaint with ebay and paypal gives em their money back. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm not saying your logic is wrong, I'm just saying this is simply how people behave.
And I agree, I didn't take into account that most people are very cautious.
The only thing to do is try it and shut up. If it works, congratulations. If it doesn't, it's really no surprise.
