How Gamers Are Facilitating The Rise Of The Alt-Right | THINK | NBC News
...of course?
How many racists, sexists, straight up murderers and whatevers can you point out that read books, watch movies? Videogames are just another form of media that many people just happen to enjoy. Just because some of those people are shit doesn't mean that you have to label the entire games community as a nazi movement.
Maybe they're distinguishing games now because of online multiplayer?
[del]Two years ago I would have loathed and disagreed heavily with this, now I'm honestly able to agree with this to a decent degree. Then again that's mostly been from the 2016 election and the uncovering of Neo Nazis. I don't doubt people will disagree with this video and others who hold opinions similar to it, but I do doubt that people aren't capable of seeing reoccurring themes from these past two years and even before that.[/del]
I meant to say that NBC is biased and people who play video games are never wrong, except me as I'm always wrong. Gamergate saved video games and lifted up reputable news sites like Breitbart as well as gave way to only the best YouTube channels like Carl Benjamin. Gamergate rightfully criticized a number of people who were overtly sensitive as it's alright to send people bucket loads of [del]volatile harassment[/del] constructive criticism.
Have your kid been using GAMER LINGO?
gl hf = Gamers Love Hitler Foremost
gj = Globalist Jews
gg wp = GamerGate Will Prevail
HitB = Hitler is the best
Really concerning that kind of stuff is so common on facepunch and in games tbh
milo yasjasgjaskfajsgklous pretty much got his alt-right campaign started near the start of gamergate via disinformation and pandering to a crowd who wanted validation
it makes one think a thought
Before GG, the alt-right were a collection of fucking losers (not much changed here heh) who couldn't break out of the backwater forums and shitty blogs that most extreme ideologies are usually stuck in. Brietbart definitely weren't as prominent in "places the internet gets it's news" either. Milo managing to latch on to the movement and validate the fear of "feminazis" or whatever with careful wordplay and choice twitter quotations definitely thrust the alt-right into a more public light.
I remember the first time I played Super Mario Bros as a kid. Something about it really made me think "huh maybe Hitler was right after all"
It's-a me! Mario! The Armenian Genocide-a never happened!
I don't really see what the big hubbub is. I really like playing Rising Storm 2: Vietnam. It's the only multiplayer FPS from this year that I like. I like it so much that I've almost squandered 3 days of my life playing it. It's a fairly niche title, so the people who play it are more representative of the textbook "gamer" than the playerbase of a popular title like Battlefield.
Like 95% of games out there, RS2 doesn't have a political agenda, nor does it promote hate. Yet having played it as much as I have, I can guarantee any game you join will feature at least one person who:
A) is screaming "nigger" into the mic
B) is screaming "gook" into the mic
C) has a MAGA username
D) any combination of the above.
This isn't unique to RS2, but as I mentioned above, the playerbase is much closer to what this video is talking about than most other games I've played. Nothing about RS2 itself facilitates this kind of behavior, but the people who play it act like this anyway. If anything, it's the anonymity afforded by the internet, not the games that use it, that emboldens racists. It just so happens that games are very popular internet mediums that also don't require a lot of ID on the player's end, so you'd feel more comfortable saying deplorable shit than on something like this forum.
Whether or not you believe it's origins lie in Gamergate, I don't think it's all that controversial to say that there is a strong alt-right undercurrent in the hardcore "gamer" community. If you watch the video, you'll realize it isn't attacking video games or the people that play them, but a vocal minority within the gaming community. And if you actually spend enough time playing games online to consider yourself a "gamer"/aren't completely oblivious, you've probably realized this connection on some level by yourself already.
In RS1 I vividly remember running into a server full of people arguing that the US was on the wrong side of the war in WW2 :v:
Ok gotta take issue with this. The Red Orchestra and RS series have always been about being very authentic. You know what happened in these wars? Horrible racism against the enemy. In RO2 the voicelines say things like "Ivan", "Russian Bastard", "Fritz", and the like. RS1 had the US saying things like "Japs", "Nips", "little yellow friend", that kind of stuff. RS2 doesn't really have this outside of calling Vietnamese "Charlie" but its too ingrained in the franchise. This isn't to say the series is made by a bunch of racists made for a bunch of racists, but this is the kind of language that is actually used in war. The series is very immersive so I'd think a large majority if people just getting in character. When I play games that take place in Vietnam I end up calling VC and NVA troops "gooks" because it fits the mood. And no, I'm not using it as an excuse to say naughty stuff that I wouldn't normally get away with, the setting just sucks me in. I have no idea what "gook" even means outside of "asian people" but apparently it doesn't apply to Japanese or Chinese people? I mean it's hard to mean a racist slur if you don't even know who it's supposed to be racist to don't you think?
As for the edgy right-winger stuff that's just true in all games because of anonymity. It's probably exacerbated with this series because it actually handles the setting respectfully and doesn't try to tone it down to be more appropriate to a mass audience. So these people who usually shitpost on pol or /k/ get attracted to that aspect of it because it's politically incorrect.
Uhh RO and RS dont contain "horrible racism" of the time period. That shits added on by the community. The closest thing youll get is in RS1 where US troops call japs Yellow Bellied. But thats in regards to them being cowards, not literal yellow bellies. Jap, Nip, Fritz, Ivan, and Charlie are not racist terms. The devs, atleast the head of the studio, is like super Christian or someshit. Thats why the language doesnt appear in their games and its something theyve been criticized for. The most hardcore line regarding Vietnamese in RS2 is "Urgghhh I hate those Charlies". And theyre soon to be adding fuckin Straya to the game and I guarantee there wont be a single line that says cunt.
Like what the fuck even is the last part? "Hey, this Nazi headlocked his mother because she told him to stop playing videogames" so that means videogames are bad? Like what even is mental health issues?
It's the "Hey you like dogs? So did Hitler, you fucking nazi!" logic.
As if life started copying worlds of parody like GTA.

I like how NBC just photoshopped #Gamergate into the tweets in their video while there's no indication of it in the dummy account's tweets
I will be surprised when a MSM news source ever tackles the Video Game accurately.
From the fear of extreme violence to sex in video games, to now them being Nazi propagandizing platforms, what a transition to watch.
Really doesn't help when the media has "experts" on standby who are ready to spin the narrative in their biased worldview as well.

All that sudden discord hate articles/videos makes me think they want people flock to their own voice chat app or get back to skype

I'm not so sure about Skype since that's Microsoft, but NBC News is owned by Comcast which does at least some communication stuff in this direction (widely construed).

I miss JT cause he was someone you could just laugh off. Now the same sort of bullshit he was spewing is a somewhat mainstream narrative

What did they mean by this?
I wouldn't be surprised if gaming overall has a growing problem with extremism.
I played the most vidya back when I had the fewest social outlets. Doesn't it kind of make sense that people ostracized for whatever reason might congregate online instead of focusing on stuff out in the meat-space? Eventually all the people that were too different from their social circles are going to find each other and aggregate.
Good shit can come out of that, like hobbyist circles.
Weird shit can come out of that, like furries.
Bad shit can come out of that, like fucking Nazis.
The social activity (gaming) is less of a factor than the internet in general. As the internet becomes more polarized and extreme, so too will the activities facilitated by the platform.

Seems like NBC is sorta salting its own farmland here. Traditional MSM should be trying to coax younger generations into consuming their product and instead they're alienating gamers for a short term sensationalist story. What happens in 20 years when NBC collapses because it's target demographic are gone? Another story of short term gain and long term loss.
Gamers have a fair amount of bad stuff going on: what gamer gate eventually became, Jon Tron type characters, casual sexism/racism but I think all that is a vocal minority. Most people are good people, and by condemning all gamers/gamer culture in general this sorta thing just serves to create unwanted division and hostility. It also erodes gamers'/younger people's trust in traditional media and the establishment in general.

I think Hulk Hogan is there because people in GG as well as people in the alt-right supported him and cheered through his lawsuit with gawker.
-snip chart was edited-
I miss when shit like this was just a joke. Can I go back to those days?
Its amazing how all these news orgs find so many scapegoats for the world's problems but have never reflected to themselves over the fucking dumb sensationalist bull they've been pulling that only serves to outrage and divide people

These things that you mentioned garner views.
They have reflected, and have found it to be advantageous.

Obviously Char, the inventor of clean drinking water and baguettes, is related to Vladimir Putin, the inventor of video games and Discord, who's related to both Todd Howard and Donald Trump, who's married to Hulk Hogan and a catboy, said catboy being well-known as the proliferator of homosexuality in modern society, which birthed Something Awful, Morpheus and some badger thing. Morpheus is also the shadow puppet developer of Undertale and Enter the Gungeon, makes money from Something Awful and is the founder and leader of the neo-nazi movement and was the real leader of the 3rd reich.

Todd Howard tied directly to Putin and Trump. I have no words.
