i was going to get one to hook up to my living room hifi but i ended up using my old android phone with arch loaded to it

but if you want to connect to a display i guess get a pi, assuming you are competent at whatever distro you use on it

also youll have to purchase a few extra bits to get it working well, eg power for usb devices

good luck getting a pi to handle 1080p without exploding

but yeah if you have any OS system with usb hard drive and power you can just install xbmc on it and go from there

A lot of people say they've had good playback with xmbc.

However the audio out is terrible, good just get an external soundcard..

they're alright, can't do 1080p very easily though. if it's just doing 720p it'll work great

Wouldn't mind a Pi but I probably wouldn't use it much apart from the off Java work for which I want more power anyway.

In my future "serious" works I'll be using real drums one way or another but for stuff like this going that far would just be a waste of time. I mean Big Black got away with it so idk... Wish it wasn't the case.
