Hey guys, I got a question here. Me and a bunch of friends are wondering if this track is really dubstep/chillstep/whatever the fuck it calls itself.
Half of my friends think it's just ambient music, my one other friend however thinks it's "chill-step" and a sub-genre of dubstep. From what we see, it's got ZERO characteristics of dubstep (By the way, I don't actually like dubstep.)

I would say Chillstep because of the beat. Though Ambient and Chillstep are easily transferable. Most sub-genres still maintain characteristics of their main, umbrella genre (in this case, the beat).

But is chillstep really a sub-genre of dubstep? It sounds nothing like it. The beat could easily be from anything.
Dubstep has a very specific beat usually personified by a clap or a snare usually inserted into every third bar. Chillstep is just Ambient and Dubstep combined, taking more of the harsher and Dub-like sounds out of the equation and replacing with more mellow melodies.

They're a fucking great live band, perfect for high up on a festival because everyone knows their songs, and they're just fun. Saw them a few years back and enjoyed it more than anyone else that day. I think they know what they're doing. They also played in my town, in a 1000 person seated venue. I'm hoping they took out the seats for it.
