at the start of the year I flew over to Germany to work with Crytek for a month, whilst I was there I was in a room with Dima Gait; the guy who designed the Crysis Nanosuit; and whilst his English was a little rough around the edges I got cozy with the guy and we'd spend hours talking about design and form; I learnt a lot from the guy.
some of you may remember this from a while back.
The original design (of which thankfully no one other then me has seen) was hilariously shit, decided to dust off the tablet and redesign it.

the front overhang needs a little reduction.
why is your work so fucking blurry
A combination of my inexperience with creating decent brushes and a bit of bad compression. For a while it seemed like i had to choose between a) a really soft, fuzzy brush or b) harder brushes that suffer from terrifyingly bad banding (as makoskydub pointed out earlier in my work), and I'm now just starting to figure out how to make sharper brushes that aren't banded or as soft as all hell. Also, to answer the question you posed earlier, I'm working from an ipad because I enjoy use of stylus on screen as opposed to stylus on tablet to screen(I'm nervous about how badly coordinated i'll be with a tablet) and my computer is currently fried and the money I was saving up for a cintiq is going to be used to fix that :/ Once I can afford it though I'm going to pick up one, although right now I'm getting a pressure sensitive ipad stylus to use us until then.

Here, this is probably better i hope. Obviously inspired by some of the work here.

I'm not a PS wizard so I may use the wrong term here but you should use a hard brush in almost every situation, the banding can be fixed by opening the brush dialogue (Window >Brush) and dragging the Spacing slider to a low figure. Also with pen pressure you should be able to make a softer mark of one colour on top of another - if your stroke tapers to nothing, it gives you a tiny little palette to pick from between the colour you're currently using and the colour you're painting onto. Pick a shade from in there and paint it between your two colours, and you have a one-step blend. Repeat this process a few times with your new middle colour and each of your original colours and you should have produced a fairly smooth, non blurry gradation which will be nice to look at if your colours are right.
[editline]11th March 2013[/editline]
@ the above thing you posted, you're relying on varying opacity of one tone for your blend. When painting digital you shouldn't be doing that, nor using burn/dodge, nor the smudge tool, or anything based on the same principal. Choose colours manually, colour pick constantly.

If the above doesn't make sense tell me and I'll make a picture of it

Made more progress after forgetting about it for a week.

Heh, I'm actually using a program called SketchBook Pro on iOS (my pc is out of order atm), although with the amount of problems I've encountered with it (shit brushes, super limited exporting, frequent crashes, etc) I'm looking into photoshop mobile or whatever the iOS version of PS is. From what I've seen SB Pro lacks nearly all of the features you just mentioned. Colors don't even blend right a lot of the time :/
daniel you wanna go get icecream tomorrow?
and by icecream I mean jef jaxon's icecream stash

Well SB isn't for rendering or anything, so yeah you will have a lot of trouble trying to paint with it :v:

Been trying to improve and do anatomy shit all week, but I've been super frustrated.
Not my drawing, but case in point

I can't even get down a basic anatomy pose-thing like this. the depth and everything just confuses me.
i finished the cleric by the way, scroll up to see

Heh, yeah, I think PS might be a better investment :I Thanks for the advice though, I'll put it to work asap.
It was a question, not a comment.
not a very helpful comment though
It's like jumping into the thread and saying 'why is your anatomy so fucked up' or 'do you even know what composition is'

The arms are a bit short, although you might just have them bent at an angle, in which case ignore me. A general rule of thumb is to try to keep the arms the same length as the legs.

What? When your drawing apes maybe, certainly not with a human. Maybe its a perception thing but i'm pretty sure legs are longer than arms?

Have you considered using a stencil-styled approach? It might be a better alternative when it comes to defining form and light.

And mentioning the Cintiq, you REALLY SHOULD condenser the Yiynova MSP19U: http://frenden.tumblr.com/post/38693256477/yiynovamsp19u
It's reviewed to be essentially the same product but it'll save you $1,500.

I remember when I started working with anatomy I used to just draw the outlines of photographed athletes, and maybe shade a little. You could try that:
and I wouldn't be frustrated anatomy, I've filled multiple notebooks with just stick skeletons and gesture drawings alone. It's can be a casual activity to listen to music to, no fuss required.
well my brother gave it some constructive criticism and personal preferences (he wanted a more unique hammer, the holy symbol to be appearing since he's a cleric and some bracelets)

now i can finally call this done. the best thing is that he's gonna tell the other dudes he's playing with that i do characters and i'll get some money off each character i make c:
That looks awesome, but what's happening with the eyes? They look fine at first glance but if you look closely they start looking weird, and then the eyebrows (?) start looking like the pupils.
That looks awesome, but what's happening with the eyes? They look fine at first glance but if you look closely they start looking weird, and then the eyebrows (?) start looking like the pupils.
uh? those aren't eyebrows; they're eyelids.
[editline]11th March 2013[/editline]
you mean the orange brushstrokes right? they're eyelids.
That makes more sense. I'm not sure why it's looking weird for me. Am I the only one?
Yeah, once you point it out my brain goes "wait, what's what here?" but it isn't too awful.
awful is an awful word
wow it isn't too awful? i actually thought it looked good :(
the orange brushstrokes are a bit too long and could be shaped better. Thats all I can see wrong about it because I see clearly that its the eyelid
