Not quite there yet, I still need to refine the front as it doesn't quite fit with the back, getting there though
your values blow my mind at all times [editline]23rd March 2013[/editline] when constructing a painting, how does one balance realistic colours, plausible scene layout, storytelling and values? I can think of a bunch of times when I'm thinking "I really like the mood set by this lighting/backdrop/shadow (etc) but in terms of a composition with 'good values' it doesn't really work"
a) you probably know more about colour than I do so I'll skip that b) research is probably your best bet, plus reference, constructing things based on an idea rather than jumping it without what you quite want in mind.. Obviously completely planned pieces aren't always the way to go and might be tedious sometimes but if you're after real plausibility, you'll have to put on your design hat and be prepared with a moodboard, aesthetics, final outcome and layout in mind.. And I almost forgot somehow, do thumbnails. Tonal thumbnails are pleasant to look at and can be enlarged and worked straight into (the amount of time this saves as compared to laying out the full scene from scratch on the canvas is notable, having a base to work from helps a lot timewise) c) Storytelling in images relies largely on the compositional flow (i.e what path the viewer's eye will take and what they'll look at first, how easily they comprehend what's happening, focal point and all that). Getting that right depends on use of the elements/principals at your disposal; scale, value, line, repetition, shape, etc etc d) Value can be balanced using ratios (as can everything), e.g rule of thirds or a simplified fibonacci. What works isn't set in stone but it's easier to get it right if you work towards something like that. anti's painting has about a 45:45:10 tone ratio (lights darks mids) and strong rule of thirds for the composition. I know you asked anti but some of that might help anyway.
From a practical point of view the left soldier's armour seems very thick and needlessly heavy through the torso and underneath those camo leggings you've given him :v: I still think it's very good obviously
Well, I thought I made the leggings bulky enough to balance them with the upper part. Thanks, I'll try to fix this problem if I do decide to finish this thing.
I think they just look thick in comparison with his macaroni arms

Nice feel of textures.

I don't have the brain to process this at the mo but I'll read through it properly in the morning [editline]24th March 2013[/editline] Messing with an idea for a Kerbal Space Program-related painting I was feeling kind of guilty because the composition I think I'm gonna go with (the one shown in the value painting) is so simple and uncluttered, and I've been trying to push myself to tackle clutter with much bravado. But unless I either add a bunch of space junk or a bunch of extra flames in the foreground (which could disrupt the storytelling of the image) I can't really complicate it much. I think a simple composition works best though in this instance. [editline]24th March 2013[/editline] in case it's difficult to read the sketches, it's a Kerbal doing some cooking using the heat generated upon reentering the planet's atmosphere [editline]24th March 2013[/editline] I think the image of him sitting on top of the craft gives him a naive calmness and furthers the sense of disregard for the realistic forces and heat which must be acting on him, which adds to the absurdity of the situation, but the one with him lying down and reaching over the lip of the capsule has a lot more action. I guess it's a case of calm vs excitement.

The TV and the computer ones at least

I really do love painting, even when I have to do it with my fingers and q-tips while sitting on the floor. This really isn't done yet, I've worked on it for about an hour or two so far. I've wanted to try a different style for a while now. It's really fun to do new stuff!

Perhaps I'm the only one, but whenever someone posts an image that's on facebook I have to open the reply dialogue and copy/paste the link to view the image. It seems more likely to me that facebook simply doesn't allow hotlinks. Could everyone start rehosting their images on a site like imgur?

Usually when you work with big pieces you'll want to resize them down at the end and then work from there. Quick example:

You should replace the antlers with hands, apply a 3D effect, and then try putting it on a shirt.
