How do i go about setting up Photoshop for painting? I remember seeing someone make a comparison of different settings that related to the way brush strokes blended. For the life of me I can't remember what it was but could someone run me through getting started?
If you're using one of the more recent versions, there'll be a little drop-down menu directly beneath the minimise/fullscreen/quitapplication icons in the top right corner of the program. It'll say 'essentials'. Click it and select 'painting'. That will change which panels are displayed on the right hand side of the screen. Look at the panels to the right of the workspace and you'll see a wide vertical column and a skinny vertical column. The skinny one will have little square icons. Click the one that looks like three paintbrushes sticking out of a cup. There are all your brush options. To enable pressure-sensitive transparency for whichever brush you're using, hit 'transfer', change control to 'Pen Pressure'. If you're just starting out with painting, I'd suggest not using transparent strokes at all until you've started to get the hang of colour. Unlike mixing paints in physical painting, when you use photoshop's opacity or transfer to mix two moderately different colours (pure red and pure yellow for instance) you don't get a nice vibrant orange: you'll actually get a pretty dull/desaturated colour. Many beginners just assume this is normal and that it doesn't matter. It can make all the difference between a good looking painting and a bad one though! You want to mimic reality in terms of how saturated your colours are, not be directed by the calculations photoshop does for it's transparency. The better way is to pick a range of colours in-between red and yellow, put them in side by side to create a chunky, blocky gradient, then use transfer or opacity to mix each block of colour with the next. So, at first, I'd suggest not using transparency or transfer until you're at the point where you can recognise when a part of your painting looks too desaturated. Once you've gotten to a point where you can make convincing colours and an image that looks great if you squint, then go and start using either transparency settings or pen-pressure-controlled transfer to blend colours. Good that you're experimenting with textures Remember though that one of the keys to a good concept painting (or, in my opinion, any painting that's trying to clearly describe a location) is an indicator of scale. There's not a lot in there at the moment that clearly shows how big these objects are in comparison to a human. Often the easiest way is to just put a human in there somewhere. You could fade the image you have now a little, add a dark mass in one of the corners and add a person looking down at the scene. This would clearly show that the person is quite far away from the scene, and much smaller than all the bits of machinery and whatnot. This video from Feng Zhu talks a little bit about scale. He only talks about it for a minute or so, but it's well worth watching the entire video anyway.
Awesome feedback guys, thanks :) I'm inspired to continue with it now that the grid hasn't toatally ruined it. I might even change the colour scheme to a blueish colour coming from the pit to emphasize the scifi feel you mentioned due to the grid, while adding birds for scale and working in a green forest feel in the background. I'll experiment anyhow.
here's an old wipster I may finish some day

Contemporary painting just pisses me off, I'm hoping that using photoshop will let me spill my creative juices without the annoyance of messy, cheap ass paint. Also, I helped in filming this Gaelic Music Video - as well as helping dragging Sam around in the sand! It was entered into the FilmG competition and so far, we made it onto the Short List for Best Music Video - Link Pretty sure I saw in the Papers that Dol Eoin and Sam were up for some sort of Acting award - Not that Sam did anything bar getting dragged off of dunes! The people's choice award is going to be announced on the 22nd of March at some event in Glasgow.

Hrrrg you guys are so good. Hoping my work doesn't pale too badly in comparison. Started playing DnD recently, thought the Dragonborn were too ridiculously badass not to do.
This reminds me a LOT of that other time someone posted a giant image and the brushwork was all fuzzy and horrible, I'm guessing that was you as well Please use thumb tags >[ t ] [ /t ] and PLEASE don't use those anything that looks like an airbrush, it's headache-inducing [editline]10th March 2013[/editline]
Some metal gear inspired sorta thing [t]http://i.imgur.com/IyENCv9.jpg[/t] Are there any good image uploading sites that don't compress the hell out of images like imgur does?
Shit hot piece And niggaupload used to be great but it's been down for a while now, I use imgur or postimage so if you find anything better post it here :/
uhhhh, if anyone here reads homestuck or is a fan i was requested to do this:
Zachary Hogan 5 hours ago Hi Feng, one thing I'd really, really love to know is your technical setup for quickly and non-destructively switching a colour image to greyscale and then manipulating* the greyscale values. I know it involves a hue/sat adjustment layer but I can't find any definite answers as to how you paint greyscale strokes that affect the colour information beneath while this hue/sat layer is turned on.
Not 100% clear on what you mean, but have you tried doing it the other way around? I.E having the colour on a layer with the blending mode on colour and the greyscaled painting on the layer below, so you can paint in greyscale on the layer beneath, thus changing the values of the colours on the upper layer? Again I'm not completely sure if that hits the mark of what you want to do but it sounds similar from your post albeit with a different arrangement
ok, actual artsy approach/attempt

Couple of value paintings - making things clear through values alone is tricky. But I'm told that a painting should work just as well in greyscale as in colour, so hopefully this will help me to improve my issues with value

Friend of mine said she liked this Tomb Raider poster. Everything looks great. It's just the head is rather big.
She's a small girl.
Just in case any of you are wondering, I haven't forgotten about my story. It's just finding the time to write, plus even with the major rewrite I have in mind I'm not sure how to progress the story.

The quiver tubes' perspective seems off, and the arrows are waaaaay too short with those long arms of hers, they'd just fall off the bow when she drew it. They're also a tad thin and don't have any nock points on the end...she's also got the arm holding the bow on the inside of the string, but if she had any intention of shooting any time soon she'd have the string on the inside, so her other arm can actually reach it to draw (just make the string visible over the top of the arm instead of disappearing underneath).
Don't worry, I take the technicalities at the end. I practice archery, I'm quite aware of the faults. :v: In fact, I practice archery with the girl in the picture. Her legs are in a slightly unnatural position (I'll fix that) but I'm not too sure about the head. However you're right about the lighting. I'll fix that too. It's on my list of changes along with bigger shoulders, thicker arms and better, slightly longer boots/feet, wetness in face etc., plus the archery stuff and detailing.
