What if our universe is actually a lifeform? What if our universe is inside some life form and it is inside its universe.
Rated you artistic because that's the closest thing we have to a TRIPPIN' BALLS rating.
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has more realistic aliens like you mentioned.
[img_thumb]http://cazovejanegra.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/queen_alienpress-web.jpg[/img_thumb] These are the coolest aliens that exist, they look really awesome.
Still somewhat humanoid though. Just with more sharp bits.
Great example of a realistic alien.
Great example of a realistic alien.
Genetically modified Example.
Great example of a realistic alien.
See that's quite clearly inspired by a maggot. It's a lot more original than having a humanoid alien but there are still recognisably terrestrial elements to it
But we live on a planet, of course we're going to be able to create creatures that resemble what we have. Its the only way we can describe it.
What about the badass aliens from Starship Troopers
But we live on a planet, of course we're going to be able to create creatures that resemble what we have. Its the only way we can describe it.
Therein lies the problem We can't imagine anything truly alien
That's what bugs me the most in Stargate and other series/games, everyone are human/humanoid and speak english. In some games/series/films they make up a reason for this, like a universal translator or like the Ancients planted our genetic code on planets(stargate) millions of years ago.
What about the badass aliens from Starship Troopers
They are inspired by insects wich are in fact creatures from planet earth.
What if our universe is actually a lifeform? What if our universe is inside some life form and it is inside its universe.
So a Black Hole would be Diarrhea?
I think life occurs naturally only on planets very similar to Earth and as such it resembles Earth's life closely. However engineered life could be very different.
no, this
Fuck, this gave me nightmares as a child.
These are the coolest aliens that exist, they look really awesome.
Xenomorphs are still pretty humanoidish, apart from the tail and the long head.
Xenomorphs are still pretty humanoidish, apart from the tail and the long head.
Make up a better alien then.
Make up a better alien then.
Better =/= Not humanoid. And anyway, It has been stated above that it's difficult to create a whole new species without being influenced by animals that we already know of.
TL;DR: "Why are bubbles round?" The humanoid form is only optimum for what we've come to know about our own planet, and it's own conditions.
The Thing. The ETs from 2001, who are incomprehensible to us in their true form. Both great examples.

The humanoid form is optimum.
No physical form at all is optimum. The humanoid form has quite alot of setbacks, and humans themselves have flaws and limitations. Having no physical form at all means that creature would not be limited by their own body's capabilities whatsoever. Humans aren't even completely optimum for their own planet; there are numerous other creatures that are much stronger, swifter, and faster. We just have greater intelligence and advanced thought-process which developed from a particularly good combination of bodily features for the conditions of our own planet and it's conditions, surroundings, etc.
I don't really like how English is the main language in the entire universe in a lot of films/games. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy had a nice excuse for that; the Babelfish. It's a little fish that you put into your ear and it translates all languages for you so you'll hear it as your own language. :3:
Actually even in StarTrek, they used the automatic translators. Even if it's like a disembodied computer, the circuits and semiconductors are the physical form. And beings made of "pure energy" is complete bullshit and any self-respecting physicist will tell you that.
OP you try your hardest to think aliens are not humanoid. But you're restricting yourself from the possibility that the when we happen to meet the first alien species, they are in fact humanoid. The odds of finding a planet like earth are slim. With those same odds you should give any shape a chance. Including humanoid. Don't band wagon.
It's called science fiction for a reason. The fact that in the writer's conveinient little universe created in the film aliens are permitted to be humanoid.

How about you try to design one, huh? It's not as easy as it sounds.
When they look humanoid people relate to them easier. They can't read the emotions of, say, a fat slimy worm thing with writhing flagellum.
Only Facepunch would relate to them than :(
