Most observers describe the Mothman as a man-sized creature with large reflective red eyes and large wings. The creature was sometimes reported as having no head, with its eyes set into its chest.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothman [sp]Have fun trying to sleep tonight[/sp]

The Kraken was, according to myth, often mistaken for a chain of islands where unwary sailors would make camp for the night, only to drown when it moved on.
Typical FP posts, can't go one thread without some sort of bash on a religion of some sort, mainly Christianity, you guys are worse than bible thumping Christians.
yes a bunch of posters on a forum are worse then people who regularly impede the progression of science, appose people's rights to their own bodies, and brainwash their followers.
Don't generalize, not all Christians are the rabid variety. Most Christians are pretty okay people who have some beliefs some might view as stupid. As well as some content. Bigfoot. [IMG_THUMB]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1d/Anbangbang_gallery_Mimi_rock_art_cropped.jpg[/IMG_THUMB] Mimis are fairy-like beings of Arnhem Land in the folklore of the Indigenous Australians of northern Australia. They are described as having extremely thin and elongated bodies, so thin as to be in danger of breaking in case of a high wind. To avoid this, they usually spend most of their time living in rock crevices. They are said to have taught the Aborigines of Australia how to hunt, prepare kangaroo meat and use fire. They are like humans but they live in a different dimension. Aboriginal Slendermen :3:

Its eyes have been compared to glowing red taillights, large and round. In many cases its head sits lower than its shoulders. It is said to stand 7 feet tall, maintaining the shape of a man. It’s wings are reported to be proportionate with its gray- skinned body. The first reported sighting occurred on November 15th, 1966 at a TNT plant left over from World War II. The unknown creature reportedly chased 2 couples all the way into the town of Point Pleasant. In another report, a couple stated that the creature was at their window staring in at them. The woman became highly distressed after the event. By the time the authorities arrived, it had vanished. Such as a 1978 sighting by some mine workers in Germany. They were going to work into the mines, when supposed "Mothman" blocked the entrance. Afraid, they backed away and moments later, the mine collapsed. Some people go even as far as saying that he was seen near the Twin Towers not long before the plane crashed into it. He was also seen on top of some bridge, before it collapsed.

Mothman. Batman. Both save innocent people. Both fly through the air. Both are stealthy. Makes sense. Batman moved to West Virginia.
That's got to be a fucking huge bird then.
Could be a seagull something like 20 meters from the camera [editline]02:51AM[/editline] It looks if it just came to view from behind that building, but the blur doesn't really match that assumption.
So it actually sounds like its trying to save people?
More or less he's the prophet of doom. Supposedly Mothman provided warnings of a bridge collapse.

Misleading thread title has lead to generic legend thread, but:
So in here, you post AMAZING gargantuan creatures of the sea, giant squids, the Kraken,or maybe Cthulhu

AMAZING gargantuan creatures of the sea

creatures of the sea

of the sea
So anyway. I tackle now two notably similar horrors from the deep. Click on thumbnails further down to see the nasties close up. The Leviathan Supposedly one of the princes of Hell, whose mouth holds the gateway to said firey pit. Deities various have tried (in vain?) to smite him for whatever reason they find other than just being an awkwardly long, scaly bastard. He's garnered himself some good media attention with a few mentions in some of creation's bestsellers: Moby Dick makes use of his name if only to talk about some whale, and then those other great reads like The Bible have referenced him directly. According to said bedside books, the mouth of the Leviathan is the portal through which all damned souls will enter Hell at the time of the Rapture. Puts a rather undeserved downer on his popularity, I'd think. Also, Alestorm sang a song in his honour which makes him, as anything else, considerably more awesome. Moving on in a similar, rather slimy vein: The Midgard Serpent The Midgard Serpent is arguably the basis for a lot of other legendary sea serpents, including but not limited to the Leviathan and slimy characters not unlike Nessie. This bloke has some rather specific mythos surrounding his personnage. With the full name (and a heck of a one at that) of Jörmungandr, in old mythology the Midgard Serpent is one of the three spawn of the Norse deity Loki and a rather miserable giantess. [img_thumb]http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d48/BeauChaotica/The%20Midgard%20Serpent/Midgard1.png[/img_thumb] I think the best story about Jörmungandr is the story of Thor's fishing trip with Hymir. Basically, Hymir is a tight bugger and wouldn't give Thor any bait. This angered Thor, and he flew into a MIGHTY RAGE. He took up his hammer and he SMASHED at the head of Hymir's biggest and most prized Ox to use instead, without a second thought. Hymir wasn't happy, but this is Thor we're talking about. They cruised off to Hymir's normal spot, and pulled a meagre catch of two whales. Thor found this to be unsatisfactory, and so asked Hymir to take them further out, to deeper waters. Hymir, cowardly cream-faced landlubber as he was, warned Thor against such a venture because he was a-scareded of the big fishies. This angered Thor, and he flew into a MIGHTY RAGE. He took up his hammer and he SMASHED at whatever he could find. In order to stop Thor from sinking the boat, Hymir agreed to sail further out into the water. Thor, muttering curses under his breath, fashioned a strong line and an oversized hook. Of course it was Jörmungandr who took the bait. [img_thumb]http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d48/BeauChaotica/The%20Midgard%20Serpent/Midgard2.jpg[/img_thumb] I'll be frank; the sickly serpent was pissed. His head was pulled out from the waves, and the water poured off him carrying with it a mix of his blood and a viscous, gloopy poison. Laying eyes on the terrible visage of this ungodly creature, Hymir turned pale with fright and cowered down in the boat. Thor saw the terror in the eyes of his companion. Thor was angered by this, and he flew into a MIGHTY RAGE. He took up his hammer and he SMASHED the serpent, right in the face. [img_thumb]http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d48/BeauChaotica/The%20Midgard%20Serpent/Midgardfishing.jpg[/img_thumb] As Thor was wailing on the poor beast, Hymir's feeble nerves could take no more. He cut the mighty line and the monster sank back into the depths, unseen thereafter for many years. Of course Thor was angered by this, and he flew into a MIGHTY RAGE. He took up his hammer and he SMASHED everything in sight. We don't know what happened after that, but rest assured that it all wound down over a hearty barrel of ale in the tavern. It is said that Jörmungandr still lurks in his murky grotto, encircling the whole Earth with his ridiculous length. According to legend, he will return to the surface on the day of the Ragnarök, when he and Thor will engage in their final battle. Despite his rage, Thor will perish after such an ordeal, and the tide of the Ragnarök will bring new life to the world. [img_thumb]http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d48/BeauChaotica/The%20Midgard%20Serpent/Midgard3.jpg[/img_thumb] That concludes my contribution...I may yet return with more tales of great battles and cowardly giants. Maybe not, I'm just non-committal like that.
Dunno if this counts, but the Bunyip is a mythical creature in Australian kid's stories. Apparently he's a nice creature though. But he looks scary.
