Damn my art teacher said they were fine! apparently a masters make you suck.
What's the masters in? The old (she's on maternity leave) head of art here commanded a lot of respect because she had a doctorate in what everyone (in my class anyway) thought was art. Until one day someone told me it was actually in Education :v: It's still a great achievement, but ... Eh.
My art teacher doesn't hold any punches [img_thumb]http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QVntp5HvK7s/TSNJY0pslvI/AAAAAAAAACU/25Pj0RNiqU4/s1600/IMG_4148.JPG[/img_thumb] Don't let the picture fool you, she can be fucking brutal
I dunno I just know he's amazing but he's like the pros of starcraft; knows what works, doesn't know how to explain it. Oh wait he is a 'celebrity artist' so http://www.mbellart.com/ The most I've gotten out of him is "the head seems big" [editline]12th May 2011[/editline] His stuff is nice and all... but he kinda bothers me. [editline]12th May 2011[/editline] And I'm pretty sure he's in the mafia.
His stuff isn't really to my taste to be frank. It looks unrefined and kind of childish. [editline]13th May 2011[/editline] If he can't explain what he means, he shouldn't be teaching.
Watch out he's going to get some guy named vinny to break your legs with a baseball bat now.
A Vostroyan I drew during a free period. Fairly happy with it, especially since I had absolutely no reference, although I think I could have picked a more interesting pose.
quick sketch dunno if I should color it. [editline]12th May 2011[/editline] g'damn it, I just realized that I screwed up her pinkies :( [editline]12th May 2011[/editline] added her hair so that she doesn't looks o masculine. Heavily updated version of my elf. Might color her in Photoshop or something. To be honest I'm mostly proud of her feet/legs and the costume design.
[img_thumb]http://i56.tinypic.com/2aahn5s.jpg[/img_thumb]
This reminds me of a totally awesome dream I had! [editline]13th May 2011[/editline] Nice work!
In the super early stages at the moment so ignore the actual facial features and stuff, just posting to make sure there aren't any glaring errors concerning positioning and sizing and proportions that I can't see. Anyone see any major errors? reference: [editline]13th May 2011[/editline] eurgh just noticed something wrong with the chin [editline]13th May 2011[/editline] oops just replaced the file in dropbox with a newer one, so now he has a fixed chin.
His ear points out too much. His shoulder bends inwards too much on both sides. His chin is actually tucked right into the shirt, no gap. His chin is wider. The inwards bulge on the right side of his chin doesn't exist, smooth it out. His eyes are too normalized and rectangular, notice how they actually create a curve. His left eye needs to be tucked in a bit closer to his right eye. His left cheek line needs to go higher and closer to the nose.

(no tracing involved btw) Or does this take out some of the observational skills that I should be learning?

My final paper for school, what a worthless piece of glass and glue. At least it's done now.

I pick from the source, then choose the colour I need based on that pick. And yes, I'd advise you do it youre having difficulties. You're more likely to continue the piece and be motivated to do more if you overlay sometimes, than you are by getting frustrated trying to get something through observation but can't get it looking right.

(no tracing involved btw) Or does this take out some of the observational skills that I should be learning?
The real world has a bazillion colours whilst in art you may end up with 8-16 set colours and maybe 64 tones, so you should eyeball what looks best for your drawing trying to learn what creates the best similar look. (you shouldn't aim for As for references, well, someone else will have to answer that. Personally I end up doing what you said when I stop having the motivation for continuing. But I don't think it's a good idea since you should learn to eyeball the references as well, something you won't really learn when you go so much in detail about getting it right, because then you start focusing on getting that one line right for that one piece, rather than getting all those lines right for any piece. What looks real in the real world and on a photo might look wrong in a drawing. Colours in a photo can be fantastic, but when you steal from just 2-4 pixels from a photo to get the same colours you end up with something really dull because you lack the whole specter of colours that together creates the fantastic look. To draw photorealistic is to cheat on realism because realism in a drawing isn't the same as realism in a photo.

Had a slightly longer free period today. Also gigantic bolt pistol.
I haven't really had much time to work on this, but I think I'm now pretty much done with the face. I don't really feel like doing the hair or getting more into the clothing, so unless I get an urge to finish it, it'll stay like this. I think the hair looks pretty good as it is (ITS MY STYLE!!1). May as well throw the original in, though it looks much better if you haven't seen the original :v:. ...Aaand I instantly felt like fixing some stuff.
I wouldn't call that hair at all.
Starting to build another set now. This time we have to build 4 2mx2m moveable frames with doors and windows in them, and 4 stationary ones that rest on the floor. This is a 2"x2" timber frame and then the doors and windows slots are going to be routed out from the timber frame, built and hinged. I think trying to copy that into a painting is not a good idea. He looks like, excuse me, an evil clown now.
Its well drawn but it looks like shes straight from the 80s.
Thanks' I take that as a compliment. I think as much as she looks alright I really feel ashamed of not doing more advanced poses. I've sort of gone into the habit of just creating DnD profile characters in some random, relaxed pose.
I tried really hard on this I really did. :saddowns: I found this picture in my leatherneck magazine. I embellished a bit [editline]13th May 2011[/editline] I fucked up on the M1
