I much as I like Bakemonogatari, I wouldn't recommend it to people who are new to the genre.
It's very first scene is a blatant ironic panty flash.
[editline]12th March 2011[/editline]
And oh god yes, watch the Tatami Galaxy.
Most of these have already been said but anyways,
Hellsing Ultimate
Cowboy Bebop
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Ghost in the Shell
Paprika
Kara no Kyoukai
The Place Promised in Our Early Days
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

The color palette and artsy in it make up for the sexual content.
The color palette and artsy in it make up for the sexual content.
I don't mind the sexual content because it is played tongue-in-cheek as opposed to seedy. It's just that showing it to someone not familiar with it can raise eyebrows.
In episode 13 (I think), the main character gropes a grade schooler.
Kaze no yijimbo
It's the only anime I can remember with how many I watch.
Then I had to go and look up the others I can recommend.
Canaan
Ghost Hound
I haven't really looked that far into anime, but there are a few that I like:
Serial Experiments Lain
Cowboy Bebop
Ergo Proxy
Trigun
Akira
[editline]weiners[/editline]
Big O
.Hack//Sign
Basically, psychological thrillers/sci-fi kind of stuff. Anything with fan-service or UGUU~ bullshit makes me want to claw my eyes out.
Cowboy bebop, evangelion, gurren lagann up to nia, big O
all I can think off the top of my head
Gurren Lagann 1-18 is fine, The rest is batshit awesome/insane.
Gurren Lagann has a fair amount of fan service, but it stays serious at the same time. About half way through or so something happens and it becomes less goofy and more serious. But because of that change it became so stupid to me and I just stopped watching it because of that. I also recommend Akira, if what you're looking for is something non asinine then that's it.
And if I want Brody proportions I know where to look.

Good god. Thread completely derailed for me.
the main character gropes a grade schooler.
that happens more than once
the best in my opinion. It's more like an art project than an anime, very surreal
[img_thumb]http://www.animeshinobi.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/bakemonogatari.jpg[/img_thumb]
im approvin this animu 4 ur watching
It dances a line between conventionality and nonconventionality, and it has a cooler take on monsters than many other supernatural themed anime (Purist Shinto stuff)
Big O is a good one like people have said, but the only problem with it is the ending. Don't watch it if you're looking for a series with a good ending
My opinion doesn't matter much, but the only two animes I ever watched and enjoyed was Lupin the third, which I guess I would describe as pretty asinine, and Case Closed (Detective Conan in Japan I think); which was so fucking awesome, I wanted to cry when they stopped translating the episodes.
Only reason I ever knew of them was back when Adult Swim used to air them back to back.
Bleach is complete and total shit after Soul Society. And FLCL is all asinine / weirdness. And from what I can gather High School of the Dead is ALL like the video gmodpanda posted.
Oh man soul society was 10/10
It's disturbing how much worse bleach has gotten since then
[editline]13th March 2011[/editline]
I never watched it but I just can't trust someone with a Manfred von Karma avatar. I know you shouldn't judge people by their avatars, and this is a forum on the internet and that's not really your face, but, damn, I just can't.
Gunslinger Girl, my friend. Little Girls, Big Guns, and plenty of awesome action.

Because little girls is a pro for an animated series.
Oh wait no it isn't unless you're fucking creepy.
you just can't appreciate ART

The thing that makes the little girls a "pro" for it, is because they whip fucking P90's out of their Violin cases and blast the fuck out of guys using the loud noise of jackhammers and working equipment as a cover noise.

which is cool when Samuel L Jackson does it
however when a little girl does it in a cartoon it's creepy motherfuckers being creepy

that sound retarted
[editline]13th March 2011[/editline]
i recommend mars of destruction
IMO you'd have to be stoned to like it.
Looks bad to me. Everything is unappealing to look at. You know art doesn't just apply to the way things are drawn but the way they are coloured right?
The colourings are just fine, there's no problem with it at all, and yeah the animation/frames used are reliable ways to determine how good it is. And even if you hate the series, I don't see how you can't at least appreciate how fluent and brilliant the art is, it seems more like you're just making up bullshit to make your "against list" longer
So I'm generally trying to build up a catalog of Anime movies or series that aren't completely asinine
there aren't any
Gunslinger Girl, my friend. Little Girls, Big Guns, and plenty of awesome action.
Gunslinger Girl is so much more than that. Looking at the Op's tastes, I would recommend it to him.
For the record, it doesn't fetishize the girls AT ALL. It's even a bit philosophical at times.
Your descriptions of it make it sound so trashy when it's anything but.
dragon ball z

It's now devolved into Dragon Ball Z with swords
But worse.
dragon ball z
How many DBZ characters does it take to change a light bulb?
[sp] Just one, but it takes 3 episodes[/sp]

Doesn't that apply to like every shounen anime out there?
Spirited Away. God bless Hayao Miyazaki.
