The only anime I like is paranoia agent, cowboy bebop, and trigun. The rest are shit to me.

Yeah, it's hard to find an anime as atmospheric as games like HL2 often due to pacing issues and the fact that I think an interactive medium is simply more immersive.
That being said, there are animes that have pulled atmosphere off like Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell. I don't think I've seen the "the world has been conquered by aliens and we just have to put up with it" atmosphere in HL2 in any anime so far though.[/QUOTE]

This is like saying i don't like American animation due to the fact that the looney tunes have their eyes popping out all the time and jaws dropping to the floor and crap like that
it's just a different form of animation and how they express moments in their show. I honestly don't see the problem. (not saying looney tunes sucks either, i love looney tunes)

I can't really empathise with you in that regard. Exaggerated expressions/reactions are a stable of nearly anything related to comics/animation/etc. I can understand what you mean when a show is just stupid and the characters are stupid but it's never been a deal breaker for me.

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt was basically made like a western show, with everything in English except for most of the dialogue, but I don't know if that belongs in this thread. I'd definitely recommend it otherwise.

Well, exaggerated expressions are the norm for most animation, as everyone else pointed out, but I see what you mean about it being a crutch. Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei is critical of modern life, written by a satirist, with a deeper humour than what you're having problems with, but you need to go in open-minded because it still does what you're complaining about as well.

I didn't like Full Metal Alchemist because they portrayed the seven deadly sins as cartoon 80's street punks.
