Code Geass can be very asinine at times (Somehow manages to jump between stupid high school nonsense and brutal genocide, sometimes literally in a single cut), but is still definitely worth watching. Has a ton of hammy over the top characters, a good voice cast, some great action, and the plot is good.
Also the Rebuild Of Evangelion movies are fanfuckingtastic. They improve upon the show tremendously, and the quality of the animation alone is a good reason to watch it.
Dead Leaves is, in my opinion, must-watch. In short: Hiroyuki Imaishi without the restrictions of television. It's bizarre and nonsensical, but in a good way.
...now that I think about it that doesn't exactly fit the description of "not asinine". Go watch it anyway.

More like the girl who leapt through 2 billion plot holes.
This is like saying i don't like American animation due to the fact that the looney tunes have their eyes popping out all the time and jaws dropping to the floor and crap like that
it's just a different form of animation and how they express moments in their show. I honestly don't see the problem. (not saying looney tunes sucks either, i love looney tunes)

I can't really empathise with you in that regard. Exaggerated expressions/reactions are a stable of nearly anything related to comics/animation/etc. I can understand what you mean when a show is just stupid and the characters are stupid but it's never been a deal breaker for me.

Because American cartoons totally don't do that either right?
The real problem I have isn't the cutaways, but when a normally serious character/show does this. It feels like they completely disregard their normal actions to do this humor, and it really bothers me. If the entire show were silly, I'm fine with that because I treat it like a comedy. But I do not want to see this humor when not 3 minute ago someone just died or something like that. I guess you could say I like my comedy and drama very separate. At the very least, in separate episodes.
I'm just very picky.
I didn't like Full Metal Alchemist because they portrayed the seven deadly sins as cartoon 80's street punks.
leave the psychological demons to japanese horror, anime. they can do it right. the way god intended.
Neither of the homunculi look like 80's street punks. Well, except for Greed, he is the only one anywhere close to what I imagine an American street punk to be.

not using tweens
you know
drawing individual frames and linking them together

it was about what happened, not how it happened

I hope you realise animation has always used tweens.

Code Geass was the very definition of a mass trainwreck and asspull moves, and that was its exact strength.
It was like Death Note on acid.

you do know every single animation style ever uses tweens right
eden of the east is pretty good
confusing as fuck all at first, but it gets really good

Okay, let's say that most cartoons in american animation aren't as fluid as they used to be.

If you watched the anime at all, then you would know that this is actually the embodiment of Envy:

an eight armed lizard with a vagina on it's face isn't exactly an improvement
it is subtly more sexist though
Watched Summer Wars last night. Really good movie.
I thought Paranoia Agent was good.
IMO, most of the anime shows that were on adult swim back then were pretty decent.
Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop are pretty good.
eden of the east is pretty good

I liked it. It had a very modern feel to it without being all 'hurrr look we talk about facebook'
Cowboy bebop and Big O are the only animes Ive liked, every thing else is shit imo
Anyone notice how different Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood and the original FMA's storyline are? I just started rewatching FMA on netflix and was surprised how much they cut out of the original and how different the stories are. Imo, I liked the original.
There's a new Miyazaki movie out, not sure of it's Studio Ghibli this time though as I have not watched it.

The revamp is more faithful to the original source material ie the manga. It's the original series that deviates as the manga hadn't finished yet. Of course, loyalty is by no means an indication of quality.
though i did watch a few episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood once, it was actually alright
Once you got into the middle of it, FMA's grim as shit.
Seriously, the bad guys seem to have pretty much won when you find out that [sp]everyone at the top of the government is in on the plot[/sp], I actually felt for a moment that there was no possible way for the protagnoists to come out on top.

It's actually a great impersonation of envy, because Envy [sp]envies people, because they are big, strong, always stay together no matter what, and don't have a vagina for their mouth[/sp]
[editline]2nd May 2011[/editline]
Anyway, OP, just watch Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Evangelion and maybe some of Miyazaki's awesome shit, and never watch a single anime ever after. Too much anime makes you stupid

A small big eyed lizard is the personification of one of the Seven Deadly Sins, yeah failing to see the connection, the part how that's his true form makes it even worse.
Of course anime has a bad habit of falling flat on it's face when it tries to use Western ideas/concepts/values, so it's understandable.
Excel Saga is a perfectly rational and well thought out show and you should watch it.

Because HE ENVY'S YOU NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND, how hard is that to understand?
Because HE ENVY'S YOU NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND, how hard is that to understand?
Because you should envy him, it would be like making Venus an ugly hag or Athena a mindless bimbo because they embody beauty and intelligence respectively.
The embodiment of a base sin should illicit an observer to desire said sin, not the other way around.
