Nine Inch Nails is an American industrial rock project, founded in 1988 by Trent Reznor in Cleveland, Ohio. As its main producer, singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, Reznor is the only official member of Nine Inch Nails and remains solely responsible for its direction. Nine Inch Nails' music straddles a wide range of genres, while retaining a characteristic sound using electronic instruments and processing. After recording a new album, Reznor usually assembles a live band to perform with him. The touring band features a revolving lineup that often rearranges songs to fit a live setting. On stage, Nine Inch Nails often employs visual elements to accompany performances, which frequently include light shows.
Nine Inch Nails is possibly my favorite band of all time, even beating Soundgarden.
Pretty Hate Machine is the debut album by American industrial rock act Nine Inch Nails, released October 20, 1989, on TVT Records. Pretty Hate Machine is compiled of reworked tracks from the Purest Feeling demo, as well as tracks recorded after its recording. The album spawned three singles, the most successful being "Head Like a Hole", which has become a staple in Nine Inch Nails live performances.
The album became one of the first independently released records to attain platinum certification. On 12 May 2003 the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the album triple platinum, denoting sales of three million in the United States. It was commercially and critically successful for a independent label, but Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails' only constant band member) feuded with TVT (the original publishing label of the album) during promotion. The album was out of print from around 1997 to 2005, due to the much publicized falling out between Reznor and the record label. Rykodisc re-released the album around the world in 2005, effectively putting the album back into print. A remastered version was released on November 22, 2010.

Broken is an extended play release by American industrial rock act Nine Inch Nails, released on September 22, 1992. Produced by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and Flood, the EP is considerably heavier and takes influence from industrial metal and noise rock, rather than the primitive electronica style in Pretty Hate Machine, which was oriented towards synthpop.
Promotion of the EP was troubled. The music videos that accompanied 5 of the 8 total tracks were widely cluttered from television airplay due to their disturbing content. Nevertheless, "Wish" won the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance and "Happiness in Slavery" in 1995. As part of the act's elevation to mainstream success, Broken debuted to generally positive reactions, and peaked at number 7 on the Billboard 200 chart. A companion remix EP, Fixed, was released in late 1992.

The Downward Spiral is the second studio album by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, released March 8, 1994, on Interscope Records. It is a concept album detailing the destruction of a man, from the beginning of his "downward spiral" to his climactic attempt at suicide. The Downward Spiral features elements of industrial rock, techno, and heavy metal music, in contrast to the dance-influenced Pretty Hate Machine (1989).
The album was a major commercial success that established Nine Inch Nails as a reputable force in the 1990s music scene, particularly following the release of the single "Closer" and its controversial video. It has been widely regarded by music critics as the band's best work. A companion remix album, Further Down the Spiral, was released in 1995.

The Fragile is the third studio album by American industrial rock act Nine Inch Nails, released September 21, 1999, on Interscope Records. The album was produced by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and long-time collaborator Alan Moulder. In contrast to the heavily distorted instruments and gritty industrial sounds of Nine Inch Nails' previous album, The Downward Spiral, the double concept album[citation needed] relies more on soundscapes, electronic beats, ambient noise, rock-laden guitar, and the usage of melodies as harmonies. Lyrically, the album is more introspective and personal than the act's previous releases.
The Fragile peaked at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart in its debut week, before dropping to number 16 the following week. The album has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, for shipments of one million copies in the United States. Despite some criticism for its length and lyrical substance, the album received positive reviews from most music critics.

With Teeth is the fourth studio album by American industrial rock act Nine Inch Nails, released on May 3, 2005, by Interscope Records. The album was produced by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and long-time collaborator Alan Moulder. It was Reznor's first original studio album since The Fragile, released in 1999. Reznor has indicated that the album is influenced by his battle with, and recovery from, alcoholism and substance abuse between albums.
With Teeth became an immediate commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and selling more than 272,000 copies in its first week. The album generated three singles: "The Hand That Feeds", "Only", and "Every Day Is Exactly the Same", which all became number-one singles on Billboard's Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart.
[release]
Year Zero is the fifth studio album by American industrial rock act Nine Inch Nails, released on April 17, 2007, by Interscope Records. Frontman Trent Reznor wrote the album's music and lyrics while touring in support of the group's previous release, With Teeth (2005). In contrast to the introverted style of songwriting Reznor used on previous records, Year Zero is a concept album that criticizes contemporary policies of the United States government by presenting a dystopian vision of the year 2022. The album is part of a larger Year Zero project which includes a remix album, an alternate reality game, and a potential television or film project. The Year Zero alternate reality game expanded upon the album's fictional storyline by using media such as websites, pre-recorded phone messages, and murals.
Upon its release in April 2007, Year Zero sold over 187,000 units in its first week, reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart, and began Nine Inch Nails' diminishing returns. Although it didn't top any charts, the album received generally positive reviews, many of which were favorable toward the accompanying alternate reality game. Year Zero produced two singles, "Survivalism" and "Capital G", the latter released as a promotional single. Disputes arose between Reznor and Universal Music Group, parent company of Interscope Records, over the overseas pricing of the album. Year Zero was the last Nine Inch Nails studio album released on Interscope. In October 2007, Reznor announced that Nine Inch Nails had fulfilled its contractual commitments to Interscope, effectively ending the band's relationship with the label.
[release]
Ghosts I–IV is the sixth studio album by American industrial rock act Nine Inch Nails, released on March 2, 2008. The team behind the project included Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor, studio-collaborators Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder, and instrumental contributions from Alessandro Cortini, Adrian Belew, and Brian Viglione. Reznor described the music of Ghosts as "a soundtrack for daydreams", a sentiment echoed by many critics who compared it with the work of Brian Eno and Robert Fripp. The songs are unnamed, and are identified only by their track listing and group number.
The album is the first independent release from Nine Inch Nails following its announcement that it had severed its ties with Interscope Records. Initially intended to be a five-track EP, the final release consists of four nine-track instrumental EPs, totaling 36 tracks. The album was released under a Creative Commons license (BY-NC-SA), and in a variety of differing packages at various price points, including a US$300 "Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition". Ghosts was initially released digitally on the official Nine Inch Nails website without any prior advertisement or promotion. Via the official Nine Inch Nails YouTube profile, a user-generated "film festival" was announced, where fans were invited to visually interpret the album's music and post their results.
Critical reception of the album has been generally favorable, with its unorthodox release attracting positive comments from many critics. Much coverage of Ghosts I–IV has compared it to the digital-download releases of Radiohead's In Rainbows as well as Saul Williams' The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!, the latter Reznor himself produced. The album was nominated for (but unable to win) two 2008 Grammy Awards, in the categories "Best Rock Instrumental Performance" and "Best Box Set or Limited Edition Package". These nominations represented the first time music released under a Creative Commons license had been nominated for a Grammy Award.
New!
The Slip is the seventh studio album by American industrial rock act Nine Inch Nails, released on July 22, 2008. It was the fourth consecutive Nine Inch Nails release to be produced by frontman Trent Reznor with collaborators Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder. The album was released for free under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-SA) license, with the message from Reznor, "this one's on me." The Slip was initially released digitally via the Nine Inch Nails official website without any prior advertisement or promotion. A limited-edition, physical version followed two months later, though this iteration of the album was not free.
The Slip was originally intended to be an EP, but eventually grew to be a full-length album. It was recorded, performed, and released in three weeks; Reznor released the album's only single, "Discipline", to radio stations himself, less than 24 hours after it was mastered by Moulder. Critical reception of the album has been generally favorable, and its unorthodox method of release attracted significant media attention. The album peaked at number 13 on the Billboard 200, and reached the Top 10 in Australia.
NEVER!
I actually haven't heard too many NIN songs, I've heard Trent is great but I never cba to check it out.
The title is painful to read...
I'm probably one of the few people who like the original Hurt more than the Johnny Cash cover. I go agree that it's very powerful and heartfelt but the original has those big booming chords at the very end of the song that I really like for some reason.
I really only have "Just as You Imagined" song, I probably should check out some more.
NIN wouldn't be industrial rock though, just straight up industrial.
One of the few Industrial Rock/Metal artist that I will still listen to.

They're back together and touring again. Matter of fact, they have a show in 2 days. They reformed last year sometime playing a secret show under the anagram Nudedragons, and released a compilation album that admittedly kind of sucks because it has only one new song.
I would kill for tickets to the Vegas show.
I thought NIN was only Trent, and he had various musicians play for him?

I thought NIN was only Trent, and he had various musicians play for him?
They did get back together again, but only for the tour. The album also has two new songs, not one. I went to their second show after they popped-up in 2010.
Also, yes, Trent is the only real member of NIN. I say 'band' because he has many collaborators.
I thought NIN disbanded too, considering Trent is working on How to Destroy Angels
That's his 'pet' project. He is still working on NIN, but giving it a backseat (no live performances) for now.
I love nine inch nails because its the one band I can actually listen to over and over and never get bored of the songs.
My all time favorite music.
I always hear people say With Teeth was the last good NIN album, but I love Year Zero and the Slip just as much as I love Pretty Hate Machine. All the albums have distinctly different sounds, but I love them all.
I'm probably one of the few people who like the original Hurt more than the Johnny Cash cover. I go agree that it's very powerful and heartfelt but the original has those big booming chords at the very end of the song that I really like for some reason.
I can't listen to NIN constantly, but I really do love Trent's work. Thing is, some of the songs are just too...odd for me, I guess. I can't listen to entire parts of The Fragile because to me, it just sounds like unsettling noise. Then there are songs like Right Where It Belongs(which makes me tear up and feel horrible just thinking about it), the majority of With Teeth and a few tracks on Year Zero that keep me coming back.
Trent did a fucking amazing job on Quake 1. Never really heard any NIN songs though.

Not only is that thread two years old and has outdated information, but it's not organized and does not feature the same things my thread has (such as track lists with links).

I actually think it's a pretty meh album compared to a lot of their other stuff. I just like the cover.

it looks like most of the posts in there are yours anyway.
also if I wanted to start listening to NIN what should I listen to first.
OP, might I also suggest you add some of the remix albums (like Things Falling Apart) and Still?

Depends, what kinda music do you like? NIN has changed over the years. If you like ambient music try Ghosts I-IV, if you like classic hard rock try Pretty Hate Machine or The Slip (it's free!), if you like 90's rock try The Downward Spiral or The Fragile (very large album - my favorite), if you like modern rock try With Teeth, and lastly if you like more electronic stuff try Year Zero.

Yes, I plan to update it very soon. Maybe around the time the thread gets a second page.
damn, Pretty Hate Machine sounds a lot like Mindless Self Indulgence's first album back when it was just Jimmy Urine and his brother.

The Slip and the free first quarter of Ghosts I-IV was where I started and I loved it.
