Don't come to California like some people are saying, I live near san francisco and it's raining ass loads today and is just starting to turn cold. If you're looking for hot weather and beaches nowhere in the US would be good, other than maybe Florida or Hawaii.
Come 10 minutes down the road to coventry and stay with me, will only cost you a £1000.

Cancun is too popular, kids are everywhere, go to Cozumel, Grand Caymon or Turks and Caicos
At this time you should avoid Mexico like the plague. They are still in the middle of a huge drug war. Tourists are a very good target. While the Mexican government has taken great efforts to keep things quiet about this, kidnappings are all the rage and tourist hotspots like Cancun are prime picking grounds. This is of course assuming you aren't going to fall victim to the other criminal elements (armed robbery, theft, pickpocketing) first. Think the cops can help you? Good luck. They are actually just as bad if not worse than the criminals. It is not unheard of for the police to rob people at gunpoint. Sometimes in uniform. Obviously you wouldn't be able to go to the local police station about it. And the best part is this, if you get arrested, game over. Mexico has no Due Process or extradition rights. Expect your nearest trial date to be sometime in 2025. Which is assuming they arrest you for something serious. But hey, if they don't like you, that can happen at the drop of a hat.
Of course, you could have picked a worse place to vacation in (such as Albania or Sierra Leone) and these horror stories are the exception, rather than the rule. But given the option of paying my own money to go to Mexico I think I'd pass. There are plenty of nicer places to spend your tourist dollars. That and you won't be risking your life by going there either.
