they do? do you have a source for this? it doesn't sound like they instantly die, even with slicing the jugular, it isn't exactly instant. the shock itself might render it painless, but i don't know.
They have a textbook for this and I happen to own one. Can't seem to find it though, should be in my room somewhere. IIRC, there is a spot on the throat that when sliced, the animal instantly goes unconscious and the brain dies quickly. So it might be still alive but it wont feel a single thing, except for the contact slice who knows.
Actually tastes really good.
a lot of things taste a thousand times better when they're very fresh

Cutting the carotid artery is relatively fast compared to other methods, behind beheading and severe brain damage.
This is the first video I've ever seen where I literally could not fucking handle it.
I cringed like fuck.
It's not Japans fault, people have to eat sometime! I feel bad for the fucking frog though, its just sitting there as the women eats its meat off a plate and it's just watching.

it's not watching anything. it's dead
The things humans will do for their culture/a cool/unique meal astounds me.
I'm sure the massive trauma the frog is suffering more than outweighs the pleasure a human gets from eating it.
I mean, in direct value, keeping it alive and it's nerves sending pain signals and whatnot probably outweigh the hunger filled/emotional fufillment humans get from it, on a suffering - pleasure basis. I'd be fine with this if it was say, a giant insect or something, because they don't perceive trauma. But an amphibian is a bit of a step up, and the higher you get on the food chain the less it is acceptable. Eating a dog alive would freak people the fuck out insanely, a frog less so. But still.

Cultures change over time.
In 500 years, I imagine the humans then looking back on our time and having an attitude towards us similar to the attitude we currently have towards the time of the Renaissance.
it's not watching anything. it's dead
I'm pretty sure the frog is at least partially alive for most of it.
I think there needs to be some connectivity to the brain for it to do reflexes or instinct.
and the way they killed this frog was by quickly severing its spinal cord
You can still be alive with your spine severed. There's no way to determine in this video whether or not the frog is alive or dead.

You'll just ignore me and rate me dumb anyway though.

Even if it was alive which it isn't but even if it was it could not feel the pain because its spine is severed.

I dunno much about frogs, but one time I caught a Pike ice fishing, the thing died the second it was out of the water because is was -65 C outside. We took it back to the lodge, butted it, and prepared it for dinner, and one of the other fishermen I was with was going to eat the heart so he was about to dig into it and we noticed it was beating a little bit, outside it's chest, not connected to anything. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it at all possible that this could happen on a larger scale?

It is not only possible but common in frogs, people apply mammal conventions of biology to frogs because they have 'cute' features.
Yet not even in the next second they claim insects don't feel pain, because they're idiots.

I'm arguing that the very idea of cooking something while consciously trying to keep it alive as long as possible is psychotic. The animal dies somewhere between getting cooked and being eaten, but the idea of Ikizukuri is to keep it alive as long as possible. If you watch the video, you notice he doesn't cut the head off. I'm not convinced he even cut the spine at the skull at all. The arms are still connected to the brain. He removed the organs so the frog would've died shortly after, but it still suffered what it got. Prove me wrong.

First of all, you're being an ass.
Second of all, I'm fairly sure insects don't perceive emotional pain at all, they don't freak the fuck out when their wounded or even tend to their wounds at all. Sure they get hurt, but they have no real reaction besides maybe running away or some other instinctual programming. I said they don't perceive TRAUMA, not pain.
Frogs are a step up, sure they aren't emotional, but they are still a step up on brain size, and amount of pain perceived. I'm just saying that as you go up the animal chain, it gets less and less acceptable. I've no problem with insects, but frogs have working brains, similar in shape and contruction to humans. Insects on the other hand, have small or very rudimentary brains/ganglia, and have nearly no conscious thought beyond their senses and instinct.
it obviously didn't die, if you continue watching the video it's sitting on the plate, blinking at its entrails, even trying to crawl away
this is as bad as that fish that's grilled but kept alive, and people pick meat right off of it as it sits there gasping
Wait, isn't that just a reaction by the dying nerves, and not the frog actually being alive?
Wait, isn't that just a reaction by the dying nerves, and not the frog actually being alive?
have you seen frog legs and salt, they just twitch.
I don't think it is programmed into muscle nerves to do a collaborative "swim away" motion, that relies on a functional brain.

Yea and it can happen in humans aswell.
