Well I'll be dammed, I ran a 2:00 but I didn't get it on camera. (Didn't turn on the cameras because I expected my new wheel setup to run like shit, but instead they ran great)
So here's a 2:01 run!

The front tires were pretty used up in this run, I'll have some good tires the 27th and I'm planning to run a SUB 2:00 run then :v:
Thought I'd revive this thread again. Stuff happend. People following the automotive addicts thread will have seen all of this but I thought why not post it here!
I blew up the engine in the green car...so it's been sitting in a corner ever since...
So I've started building a new car from scratch, been about 7 months of building now. About 20-40 hours a week of evenings and weekends dedicated to building this new car.
I honestly have about 600 pictures of the build by now, But I'll post the main parts.

THE CAR LIVES!
Beneath here is my last update from another thread. Obviously there was a LOT of problems in the 2 weeks before testing day but I made it!
[editline]29th September 2017[/editline]
So last night I really went all out and finished everything on my list. This was at midnight, so I drive the car onto the trailer, boom. Bursted fuel line and the fuel pump died too.
So that really set the mood. Pulled all kinds of favours to get a proper fuel line this time of night. In the end I got the car finished and onto the trailer at about 3 in the morning.
[t]https://i.imgur.com/MEb4TUL.jpg[/t]
Okay all well, so the next morning ( 3 hrs later ) I pick up the trailer and drive off to the circuit. I have this thing when towing a trailer + car I usually stop at the first gas station I come across, just to check if everything is OK.
Well I was greeted with this
[t]https://i.imgur.com/3LjWV9n.png[/t]
Weird as fuck, the opposite corner of the car had the exact same thing but less extreme.... So yeah that put my already grumpy tired mood even worse, I started to think it wasn't such a good idea. But whatever, I had already come this far.
So I arrive at the track, it's raining and everything is wet. This sucks because I wasn't planning on driving in the rain. You can't really get a feel for a new car in the rain. I only had slicks, no wipers or anything.
So when it stopped raining I went out on a wet track, didn't really do anything except drive the line. Rev to 5000 MAX and listen for anything weird while monitoring temps and data. All seemed fine, but my exhaust clamp broke and the thing came down beneath the car dragging from the exhaust manifold. That took about 2 bags of zipties to fix but it was OK for another round.
So I waited about 4 hours till the track dried up to make the very first actual run, where I try give some gas. See what it does.
[t]https://i.imgur.com/Iss7IJ7.jpg[/t]
To my suprise
-Temps stayed OK (still need to get an oil cooler and bigger radiator but still OK)
-Nothing leaked!
-Nothing fell off or broke
-Gearing was good
-Braking felt strangely good, even tho my tires had fuck all grip or heat in em
-Shifting felt great (except going into 5th)
And even crazier, I thought for 100% my tires would rub...they didn't and my god it looks great
[t]https://i.imgur.com/3F3N44e.jpg[/t]
So yeah I was really happy at this point. In the end I only did 2 sessions. On wet and 2nd time on a dry track. Even tho I told myself I WOULD NOT look at times....the second run of the day I lapped a 2:03.... which is only 2 seconds off my M3 which we poured a lot of time into getting the suspension and track good...and now on this brand new car which I've never driven before, or even tweaked anything suspension wise, I'm already 2 seconds off my best time ever. Some footage of that second run

Yeah it's a bit twitchy, but I used different slicks from TOYO. Well they were p shit, couldn't get any heat into them what so ever. So on better tires (Yokohama) I'll FOR SURE do a 2:00 lap. Hell when the car is fully dialed out it will go beneath 2:00.
So yea, I'm quite happy with how it turned out. I have a massive list of changes already but there's a really solid start and I'm positive that it will only become better.
Thanks for reading this and listening to me rant!
[editline]29th September 2017[/editline]
Nice post. Shaking down a new car always exposes a lot of issues and you just hope that they are fewer in number rather than greater. Looks like you had a relatively successful outing!
Any idea what caused the windshield cracking? Do you think it was mechanical/thermal stress or was it something like the engine cover flapping around, maybe an unsecured hood pin?
Funny how despite posting in the Automotive Addicts thread for years, I've just now found your dedicated thread!
Watching your most recent videos made me do some hotlaps in Assetto Corsa at Zandvoort, in the e30 M3 Group A version. I was able to get pretty close to your lap times, I think even better them by 1-2s. You definitely have better pace than the video truly shows.
I then took a mod BMW car for a spin. I think it was e36 M3 with paddle shift and hillclimb-level aero. I think I ran like a 1:40 :v: Hits close to 160mph/257kmh on the main straight!
Really gets my dreams going...if I ever get to Move to Western Germany, near the Nurburgring of course, I would also be within a few hours of Spa, and within 3-4hrs of Zandvoort. I still need to visit the country, but I have a feeling if I made the commitment, I would never look back.

Yeah it all went way better then I could have hoped for!
The windshield seems to be cracked because of a stress related issue. Still not quite sure why.

Do it! Could really use another racebro here :v:
And yeah I keep forgetting I made this thread. I should probably update it more often but I'm not so sure if the rest of FP is as interested as the Automotive Addicts fellas.
And about the video pace, it indeed is quite hard to display how fast 2:00 minutes really is on Zandvoort! But keep in mind the E30 M3 is lighter, and has more power. A E30 M3 should do sub 1:55 for sure on Zandvoort.
Im interested.
What do you guys think I should do exterior wise?
I'm going to be finishing the car soon, I was going with a supertouring look like so

I've already got the front bumper and fenders custom made, also just picked up the rear wing. So I'm all set with that. Because currently the car looks like crap!

But I hate paintwork :v:
Definitely could use a front splitter. One that covers a bit more area than the Supertouring one. Seems like you have a brake duct intake, or at least a foglight inlet that is waiting to be converted into one. I'm used to seeing them more often at the very bottom of a bumper/splitter, but that isn't a rule sort of speak.
Also, take off/paint over the abrupt black side panel lines, make it green like your mirrors. I think it's kind of your signature color, isn't it?
Is it just me or does the shifter seem kind of sloppy in the video?
Is it just me or does the shifter seem kind of sloppy in the video?
Really? What makes you think that? It's actually REALLY tight and solid.

Yeah I don't know :v: I just took the green ones because I didn't receive any mirrors in time.
Probably had something do to with the fact that I didn't order any.
How much does this hobby cost?
And if, let's say my friend and not me, was feeling a lack of testosterone and wanted to vroom fast, are there like, rental junkers you can go to town with on the track?
Simply put, this hobby costs me everything.
No savings
No hollidays
No eating out
No gadgets or expensive toys
Honestly, I spend about 99% of my income on this "hobby". At this point it's more of a lifestyle.
Depending on where you live, there are probably lots of arrive and drive company's with dedicated E30 or E36 racecars that you can just hop into. A few hours of driving will cost you somewhere between 800-1500 depending on what car you pick, duration and type of insurance.
You're living a dream man. Are you hoping to step it up and become a professional?
I'm poor and this is the only thing I can do.
Nah I've never hoped for that, as it isn't realistic.
My ultimate goal would be to be able to secure enough sponsoring so I can keep racing while not staying broke all the time.
Why not? All of that starts with a passion and you clearly have tons of that. You're not exactly racing RC cars or playing video games here.
Why not? All of that starts with a passion and you clearly have tons of that. You're not exactly racing RC cars or playing video games here.
Because it's really THAT unrealistic. The only way for this to become an option is to start out in a CUP class. That means a race class with identical cars. To even compete at P10 or higher you need a top of the line car, engine rebuild every single race, new tires each race. A full season of driving would cost more then I earn in 10 years. Even then, IF you're by some miracle the fastest guy then yeah you can go up to bigger classes for example a Porsche GT3, formula 4, 3 etc.
But it all comes down to this, to even have a shot at a pro career you need to pump millions into yourself, which I don't have.
Besides, I really like my freedom and the work itself. I'm going to finish building my current car. Currently working on getting it to look good. Then I want to go look for a sponsor. I see a lot of guys in my class that have 10-15+ small sponsors on their car...sure it all adds up, but I don't think any of the 15+ sponsors really gets their money's worth of exposure when you're just another one of the decals.
What I want to do is present a good looking, unique and fast car, and then find 1 or 2/3 bigger sponsors to work with. This way I can actually give the sponsor more exposure by creating a car livery based around the sponsors colours and style. Then, if someone sees the car for the first time, they will straight away associate the car with the brand.
I've never approached any company's for this before, even though everyone else in my class is being sponsored for more then 40-50% of their running costs. I've thought about approaching Facepunch to see if their interested in a facepunch livery, would be a unique sight! But then again, i'm not quite sure what I can personally offer except the exposure on my car (and suit/helmet).

its probably the torque of the engine moving it

some classes are definitely like that, but have you explored all your options? i'm not sure what it's like in europe, but here in the US the SCCA (a sanctioning body for motorsports) runs what are called 'sealed engine' spec classes. basically you buy an engine from them and it's 'sealed' with special stickers/seals that reveal if it's been opened and tampered with, and then they scrutineer all the cars after every race to make sure everyone is racingin on an even playing field. i'm not sure how much you've spent on your new car but in the us 10k euro is enough to get you a full season of racing in an entry-level formula car championship that awards 50k+ scholarships to their champion to continue moving up that ladder, and formula is way more expensive to compete in than gt usually. motorsport is definitely more expensive than other stuff but the biggest barrier to entry is the car. you have a car and you're racing in a series. i'm sure there are people out there that rebuild their engines after every race and come with 6 sets of tires and whatnot, but you can't buy skill and items like that aren't usually worth more than at the absolute most a couple seconds a lap with identical drivers, if even that much. i understand if you're just wanting to get out and race without worrying about making it a career though! that's perfectly fine, i just wanted to say that you should never say never, you know? hopefully we get the FP sponsored bmw soon.
have you looked in to getting someone into your passenger seat (if you bother installing one) or looking over your driving footage? a second set of experienced eyes can be a godsend for finding time left on the table.

Sort of what I was thinking. Never say never, there is always a form of professional motorsport that is "affordable" somewhere. It never will be easy, but I don't think every single last fully professional seat out there is only obtainable by literally being a millionaire.
Personally it's my dream. While I do still share a lot of the doubt and uncertainty, in that I can't be confident I'll ever be able to afford the necessary path to somehow become a paid driver, I still think it's worth a shot.
I suppose even if I truly will never even come the slightest bit close to being a pro, it's still possible to race in some of the big races I care about as an amateur. The N24 has plenty of amateur-friendly classes, simply because the cost of the cars are much lower. That's pretty much the main race I'd like to one day drive in, but I'm still many, many steps away from that.

same. racing is the only thing i've ever really felt any passion for, so i'm not going to give up just because i'm starting late and i'm not the son of a billionaire. there are plenty of seats and series out there, so theres no reason to give in yet. hopefully we can get on track together some time! maybe i need to make a trip up to the northeast...
I want to get started but I simply don't have the income to do so
I want to get started but I simply don't have the income to do so
look up karting in your local area. if you have any income at all you probably have enough to start karting if you're serious about picking it up as a hobby.
Well I made it just in time!

Went to a new-ish track. (Only been there once or maybe twice, not sure long time ago)
Took the chance to fine tune the suspension (Which was awful at the start) the car would suddenly lose it's balance at high speeds and throw it's rear out.
Anyway, here's some small footage (Was too busy to actually try and set some proper times)
