I disagree. If airsoft is only a hobby in that sense then the direction which it grows will be only at the dressing up market, so there'd be no quality, just a very diverse selection of weapons. Airsoft is a sport. It's team based. It is competitive. It's not the kind of sport you put bets on, but if all it is to you is to dress up and not even try to win then what is the point in playing, why not just do military re-enacting?
That's pretty much what it is...
All the people I've met at fields that go to win have been massive douches.
Sorry for the cliche, but if you go to have fun, the atmosphere for everyone there will be much better.
Timebomb really said it well, and I'll probably quote that post a lot of times during the years I do airsoft.

Shit, I want to post it to the bulletin board that's inside my field's store. Always thought this hobby was meant to be something fun, where people can goof off and shoot each other with plastic instead of be giant assholes who drop new gearboxes or springs in after they pass the chrono.
I play Milsim and that isn't even competitive. You just play to try and complete and objective, not to "pwn like in cod olol". Fun is of the upmost importance and when there is someone with a huge highcap that is spraying, no one on the other team finds it run or realistic.
When I hit somebody I am happy. Regardless of how expensive my gun ,or theirs, might be. When I am hit I am disappointed, but happy because I'm playing a game/hobby/sport/whateveryouwanttocallit that I love. I hope other people think like I do :ohdear:
The people I play with do.
I mean, come on. We're doing a Survival post apocalyptic role playing OP, and there's a bunch of people that are trying to plan a Star Wars themed OP. I have no idea how they're going to do that, but they're trying because it will be fun.

Every time I take to the airsoft field, I have absolutely no intentions of winning, nor do I have any sort of sense that I am actually competing to win. Im just in it to have a good time.

You keep coming back to the word "win". Winning is only one of the many incentives for participation in an airsoft game. Some of the OPs I go to do have a declared winner, simply for bragging rights or the continuation of a series of OPs with a storyline. The surprising thing about many (dare I say most) airsofters though, is that, like the re-enactors you speak of, winning isn't their incentive to play. For many, its just the expiriance of participating in mock combat in a semi/highly realistic environment, or for others, its the ability to assume a new role for the day (In a very LARP-y sense), for some, its mearly to blow off some steam shooting at your buddies with what is basically the closest you can get to a real gun without injuring someone.
Sorry if my responses are wordy, I just really love discussing what many of the guys on my other forum call "airsoft theory" :v:
Edit:
Its a damn shame all of us FPers are spread out around the globe. With all of our attitudes towards airsoft being rather similar, I think we would have great time at an OP together :v:
We should meet up in Modesto, California so I don't have to drive far.

Airsharp made a much MUCH cheaper one not too long ago. I dont think the make it anymore though.
I love the feeling of actually using a well thought out tactic/plan in a real scenario whither it fails or not, the fact that people can pull off teamwork in this sport (most of the time) gives out a really nice vibe. It's not like you're going to get the adrenaline of people shooting at you from collecting trains now are you.

I think he still sells the full size CAD prints for them so you can cut your own.

I would def be up for that.

Oh I know it's way overpriced but it's still pretty cool. Kinda like the minigun, you don't operate it the same way you would a normal rifle, or even a SAW.

I used to own one, very cool gun, main reason why i sold it was because I was sick of taking it to "WWII" games(1 in 25 people actually dressed authentically, rest had m4s and m60s)
unless you played WWII sim games, it was utterly pointless. Ammo box took longer to hook up than the real one, needed another person to help carry ammo can and/or tripod and was incapable of firing in a mobile stance.
I would def be up for that.
I'm 2 days of driving away :<

Smuggling your gun and self across the US canada border isn't that hard, you just walk on through and nothing happens.
It's worse than the mexican border.
Here's some better pics of my gear:

yes the pack is full of real ems equipment that I am certified to use (Basically everything short of pain killers and IV equipment)

I'm probably going to replace the mich with an IBH, not sure though...

This is a bad idea. When you go through the border they ask you if you have any replica firearms such as airsoft and if you lie and say no and if they do one of those random checks to your vehicle, you are screwed.

Where did you buy your assault pack from? I found one on Amazon for $67, but I'm trying to find the cheapest possible price.

I'd look on ebay for packs made by Pantac or Condor, they're both knockoff companies but are extremely good quality for the price. (They're both used by the military too)

I use Condor. I have their Interceptor Plate Carrier, and Hydration Pack. I'll look on Ebay though.
Anybody know how long it takes for WGCshop to ship?
