Lightning Bolt are fucking awesome!
I don't think time signatures are subjective
time signatures can be very subjective if the music doesn't necessarily stress the beats very hard
like when pop music is in a different time signature you can tell because the music is stressed very hard on the proper beat like modern man for instance by Arcade Fire which is in 10/8 and you can hear it because it stress the extra beats.
but crazy stuff where the beats can go random or haywire the beats get stressed in weird places and the time signatures might not be very clear. musicians hardly count the beats like that, i've been playing for years and i still don't always count them
technically you can write anything in any time signature at all using complicated groupings. Back on the Meshuggah thing they have a 4/4 beat but play rhythmic cells of various lengths over them.

The best math band ever though is Meet Me In St Louis and I'm not fucking kidding. Them and Colour. And Tubelord.
That is some great math, sir. Props to you. :h:
And yes, Meet Me In St. Louis were fantastic. Such a shame about them splitting. :c
They are. You can write a song in a certain time signature but anyone can feel it in anyway. One of the cool things about them is that they are subjective, and you can use that to make normal things sound weird.
Exactly. If a song goes A, B, C, D, A, B, C, D, A, B, C, D, one can count it as A B C D|A B C D|A B C D (4/4) but also as A B C|D A B|C D A|B C D (3/4)
It's about grouping notes. It's the same order of notes, but grouped differently, making it different time signatures.

That's the Mellotron Scratch outro pretty much :v: drums play 4/4, guitars in 6/8, drums change to 4/4 after a while. It's cool.
You can't argue with Meshuggah being polyrhythmic, sure, it fits into 4/4 which is why they're so often considered groove metal, but it's normally only one piece of the kit which provides us the steady beat and the rest is playing around it
i just saw meshuggah live and every song they played was in 4/4
spam disagrees
Polyrhythms. Deal with it.
Is there more like Giraffes? Giraffes!
They're amazing.
I can't find Hella, and Tera Melos has vocals but it might grow on me.
what do you mean you can't "find" hella?
anyway try uhhhh
drive like jehu's first album
Planets is good to,

was gonna see them live with Lightning Bolt but the fucking venue wouldn't respond to peoples emails for their address.
Lightning Bolt might have been the greatest live show I've ever been to.
Haven't seen Marnie Stern mentioned yet.
Polyrhythms. Deal with it.
Well, polyrhythms aren't the same
That's like, you take two bars of the same length, divide one into thirds and one into fourths, and out them together
Polyrhythms are just more than one time signature at a time

Right.
Let's take 'Bleed' by Meshuggah. Mmmkay? 4/4 drums. You'll hear the accented pulse on when the snare hits every four beats. But, the guitar, also in 4/4 plays a repeated phrase that goes over the barline, therefore displacing the rhythm. For the guitar to get back into sync with the drums, it will play 3 bars of this phrase. At the end of the third bar, it is back in line with the drums. It sounds strange and you may think (not you, personally) it's in a different time signature, but it's just because the guitar falls behind, the accented pulse is displaced.
Fucking cool shit right there, bro.
Right.

Yeah
It's awesome
But it isn't polyrhythm
Anyway it feels like we're derailing the thread with stuff that doesn't really matter

Which is a polyrhythm. The guitars are not playing in 4/4. What they are playing adds up to 4/4 but is better expressed at 6/8

It is awesome.
It is also a polyrhythm.
Is that a cross rhythm? I was under the impression if they're the same length it's a polyrythm but otherwise it's a cross rhythm.
I cannot be bothered to try and prove this point anymore. Arguments over the internet are the lowest of the low.
Let us all agree that Meshuggah are awesome [sp]and that I'm right.[/sp] ;o

Exactly

A cross rhythm is just a type of polyrhythm

Thanks man, means alot. Yes, can't believe it really. They deserve to be much more widely recognized..
A cross rhythm is just a type of polyrhythm
could you elaborate?
The two terms are used interchangably in most cases, but polyrhythm is the more general term for all forms of it, whereas cross rhythm refers to two definite rhythms being played over each other. By my understanding a polyryhthm simply applies to two different rhythms being played over each other
[editline]30th June 2011[/editline]
By which I mean, Cross Rhythm seems to apply to two and only two rhythms being played on top of each other forming a pattern. 4 over 3 for example, while the term polyrhythm can apply to multiple time signatures being used to reach sync with the time signature they're played over.
