A good idea, but the last thing we need is more technology. Just in my opinion.
A good idea, but the last thing we need is more technology. Just in my opinion.
Why?
Look at when he first pans down to the kindle. Honestly, if I didn't know beforehand that that was a screen, I would think it was printed on. That's as close as you can get to seeing why the screen is cool without actually playing with it in real life. Also I would have loved this a few years ago when I actually read a lot of books.
I love mine. I've had the third generation for a few months.
You all have messed up eyes or something because I can read off of an LCD screen fine for at least 2 hours before my eyes start to feel a little weird..
That would be fine and well if I only read for 2 hours at a time. Sometimes I will finish a book in one sitting and that takes much longer.
My girlfriend has one, its pretty nifty. You can download any book whenever you want. I prefer actual books though, the smell of paper soothes me.
Nothing is better than sneezing in a library book or Rubbing your shitty fingers in the pages, so when a guy like 2-d opens it up and sniffs the pages he gets some horrible Hepatitis. Enjoy your book.
Just ordered mine. :3:
I find that I spend enough time gawping at screens. I wouldn't really want to spend an exciting evening surfing the web, then go to bed and look at another screen. That's what's always put me off those e-readers.
It's not really a screen. It's not lit or anything, you need lights on in the room to read it. I got my mom one for mother's day, and it's very much like reading an actual book.
Funny, I just read 1984 off my Kindle. Great book.
Yeah, that book changed really changed how I think about things. I got it on my Kindle in a bundle with Animal Farm for $10. [editline]15th January 2011[/editline]
I have a Nook color. Same difference essentially.
The problem is that the Nook has color because it uses a LCD screen. The screen produces light which means unlike the eInk screen you can read in the dark but at the same time it has two more major cons: It's MUCH less energy efficient and can cause eye strain, which is bad. [editline]15th January 2011[/editline]
It's not really a screen. It's not lit or anything, you need lights on in the room to read it. [editline]15th January 2011[/editline]
A good idea, but the last thing we need is more technology. Just in my opinion.
Wait, what? This is a fucking gaming site and you don't think we should have more technology? [editline]15th January 2011[/editline]
It's similar. E-ink screens are hard to describe in detail as there's nothing else much like them. The closest you usually get is, "they look like a book" which doesn't really help. See if any of your friends have got them and ask to look at them. Alternatively, if you use the tube (I see at least 3 people a day using them on my way to college) or see someone using one out and about, have a glance over their shoulder at it. So far, I've shown mine to a couple of naysayers and most of them have been quite impressed with the screen.
eInk uses a liquid UNDER the screen to produce the Ink effect. It looks like ink printed on a plastic screen to be quite honest. [editline]15th January 2011[/editline]
I got a Wifi Kindle 3 for Christmas. I'm on the tube for 8 hours a week at least and it's a godsend not having to fiddle with pages and bookmarks when it's packed. :iia:
I agree, I just got the WiFi version for Christmas also and I already have like 40 books on it.
They look fucking cool.
I've had one for a few months and I love it. I also got the cover with the light build in which is really quite handy. I'm quickly running out of bookshelf space in my room, so having one of these I can just buy a book whenever I want and not have to worry about where to put it. Last week I was reading in bed and finished the book. If I didn't have a kindle this would mean getting up and grabbing another book to start, but now I just browse the store and buy a new book without getting out of bed. Oarsome.
If it only had The Walking Dead.
Why?
I'm just one of those crazy people who think technology is ruining a lot of things. I know i'm a hypocrite because I'm saying that as i'm on Facepunch.
Because what they were doing was technically illegal and it was the only option they could take to avoid damages. They were aware that it was a shitty situation and that they had no choice, so they apologised to those affected and gave a full refund. There's no reason to be mad about this unless you're some paranoid tinfoil hat wearer that believes 'the fat cats' at Amazon are spying on you and going to delete all your pirated books. Besides, Amazon doesn't give two shits if you get one anyway.
When did anyone say anything about pirated books? Anyways if you are okay with Amazon having complete control over what you have already purchased, that's fine. I will stick to regular books because they won't disappear overnight (along with the fact that I can share or resell them) Edit: I also don't give a shit what Amazon thinks. :frog:
Kindle's look really cool, and for some reason I really want one. The odd thing is, I don't really read books or magazines.
Wait, what? This is a fucking gaming site and you don't think we should have more technology?
I mean gaming consoles, and computers (sort of) are alright. I can make a wall of text explaining why I don't think its necessary to create more technology, but I'm sure you guys just don't give a shit.
Theres a lot of war books I want for my Kindle, but is there anything like fantasy/medieval interesting fictional stories out there? (I'm 14, just in case it's like ridiculously hard to read.)

I did. There are a lot of good books available for free. [editline]16th January 2011[/editline]
I mean gaming consoles, and computers (sort of) are alright. It's just that in my opinion, technology is good and can help as well as harm. I'm the type of person who leaves books lying all over the house.
I thought this thread had some artistic pictures of the river in latin America
And guys, you know what's awesome? I took the L4D sacrifice comic's PDFs, edited them together into one long comic and converted it into Kindle eBook format. I'd be willing to send it to anyone if they want it and I even set Valve as the author in it's metadata. In other words I don't at any point claim I made the comic itself and I just made it into an eBook (So no, it's not stealing since Valve made the comic free to view PLUS I gave them credit by making them the author). (The metadata is the information such as author and cover)
Send please. :3:
I'll upload it to a file sharing site tomorrow probably. If you don't have a Kindle you could just watch it on Kindle For PC which is free. And if anyone needs me to, I could convert it from Kindle eBook format to another eReader's primary format. (Kindle accepts the most formats out of all the eReaders available so I chose that one, but I still have the PDF to convert if needed)
I have a Nook color. Same difference essentially.
A nook color doesn't use the e-ink display. It used an LCD panel. That isn't good.
From what I've read ANY book published before 1900 can be received for free.
thought it was before 1920.
The only thing that sucks is that I can't find any of Remarque's books other than All Quiet on the Western Front it's getting really annoying.
I own a 3rd generation Kindle. It's p. cool.
mom just got a nook color and i like it better than my friends kindle
I actually have pdfs available for most of my classes this semester. Is converting pdfs to the native kindle format easy? [editline]17th January 2011[/editline] I'm leaning pretty heavily towards the nook, but I'm not sure how the display will compare to the kindle. It's more powerful, and runs on android, but is the display easy to view in the sunlight, or does it cause eye strain?
Ok what books do you know that can be finished in under 2 hours, that don't have pictures in them.
Hell, I can read the forums for more than 2 hours without my eyes feeling different at all.
I put in for a Kindle for my brother this Christmas from the family and he hasn't put it down. Apparently 'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' is good
