I actually have pdfs available for most of my classes this semester. Is converting pdfs to the native kindle format easy?
It costs like 10 cents for them to convert it when you email it to your kindle mail thing, but there is probably a program you can find that will convert it for free.
Sounds like a good deal. With the money I saved by getting ebook versions I can just afford to get a 3g.

Unless the files in question are simple, the result may be quite messy. Worth a try though.
Thats where kindle DX excels, with that huge screen you really don't need to convert.

I'm leaning pretty heavily towards the nook, but I'm not sure how the display will compare to the kindle. It's more powerful, and runs on android, but is the display easy to view in the sunlight, or does it cause eye strain?
Get the eBook management software Calibre. It manages your eBooks and can convert different eBook formats.

No and yes. Hope that helps.

Might be, I have bad memory. Or just a faulty and/or wrong source.
A nook color doesn't use the e-ink display. It used an LCD panel. That isn't good.
This. Everyone please refer to this if you need to ask "WHATS DIFRENSE BTWEEN KINDLE OR CULOR NOOK?!"
Hell, I can read the forums for more than 2 hours without my eyes feeling different at all.
Yeah but it's not entire pages of small text.
Yeah but it's not entire pages of small text.
And it makes more difference between the LCD screen on the Nook is MUCH smaller than the average monitor.
In case anyone cares to know, the native file format for the Kindle is AZW which is Amazon's eBook format, but the Kindle works perfectly fine with Mobi files also since AZW is a VERY similar file type. They're almost identical. (AZW is a barely edited Mobi)

Awesome. :D
I can make a wall of text explaining why I don't think its necessary to create more technology, but I'm sure you guys just don't give a shit.
No, because technology will save us someday. Without technology, we are no better than field mice, IMO. Why have a brain capable of building things and not build? not that mice do, but all the same.
A bunch of kids are bringing Kindles to my school now to read books (I guess they got them for Christmas). Apparently, if its an iPod, phone, digital camera or whatever, teachers freak the fuck out and confiscate it for a week. But a Kindle is a-ok. V:v:V
My family has two of these plus the kindle app on our phones, with a large collection of bought books its pretty good, but has a few small flaws.
I don't know if I'd get one. Sure it may be good for college books, since carrying them around would be hell.
I wouldn't mind having an apartment/room in my house filled with paper books. So when I bring a lady home, she'll notice that I am a serious reader, instead of handing her a device that has all of my books on it.
Makes me look smarter, I guess.

Saying "I spent $X on this Kindle, and bought books for it too" Makes you look a serious reader.
Mines arrived, and its fucking cool! I love reading now! :D

Maybe your school has a policy allowing them because they have the school's textbooks? Maybe they need prior permission? I wouldn't know.

Plus you sound smarter if you say "Plus, switching to eBooks saves me over $20 per a book!" because you're saving money.

Very nice explanation. But I think that it's important to add that it might destroy us but we've already reached the point where it can, so let's keep on moving forward!

that's why I want the Kindle DX, so I don't have to convert PDFs(I don't really like the format but there's no escaping it)
too bad it's way more expensive

a kindle is understood to be for just reading books and isn't an annoying distraction
sure you could listen to music, but the headphones would be noticed, and the internet browser isn't a terribly well known feature or useful for most of the web
I use my Kindle at school to read due to the fact that carrying 2-3 novels around is a pain in the ass.
I WOULD take my Kindle for school but I'm worried it'll be stolen since I have a sibling who already had her iPod Touch stolen. Rather just carry around books.
For anyone familiar with the book, how do you think "American Pageant" on PDF would turn out?
It looks like its from 1999
I have one and i love it. Books are sooooo much cheaper off Amazon anyway, because there's no publishing costs. And some books are 100% FREE! I agree that theres something to be said for actually flipping pages, but the cost of the books makes it ok :)
The ghosting isnt a problem, btw. it goes away almost immediately.

I don't know if you commonly carry a bookbag wherever you go or if you put your stuff in a locker, but I always take mine to school in a front pocket so i can look at it at all times (My book bag goes everywhere with me in school) ad no one's tried to take it. As long as you can keep an eye on it I'd imagine you'd be fine
For anyone familiar with the book, how do you think "American Pageant" on PDF would turn out?
Not so great, there are a lot of pictures.
I don't suppose theres a way to remove pictures, or to not display them, is there?
Anyways, this whole kindle/nook thing has really caught my attention. What do you guys think is better of the two? (Screw the nook color btw)
Not so great, there are a lot of pictures.
One thing I found

Skip to 3:45. The pictures on CNN or similar to those in American Pageant. It didn't seem that bad. Could you elaborate?
Well reading pdfs on Kindle is not so great because the text doesn't fit on the screen without being tiny, so you have to zoom in and constantly have to scroll left to right on the same page. It's easier to just convert the pdf into mobi format on Calibre but then I don't know how well that works with pictures, because all of the books I have have a page thats entirely an image like a cover or is entirely text so I wouldn't know. Anyway you might as well try it, I'm thinking about putting as many textbooks as I can on mine too.
I would love to get a Kindle but they don't have the books I read. Warhammer books for some reason never go on the Kindle.
I would love to get a Kindle but they don't have the books I read. Warhammer books for some reason never go on the Kindle.
If the book is on Amazon.com then you have the option to ask Amazon to contact the book's publisher about making it into an eBook. Just do that. Of course it might take a long time or not happen at all but, oh well.
So is the Kindles web browser shit? Can it handle FP fine?
For anyone familiar with the book, how do you think "American Pageant" on PDF would turn out?
PDF's blow on the kindle.
[editline]21st January 2011[/editline]
The browser can do FP alright, but it's slow.
I just use it for emails.
My mom got the Barnes & Noble Nook for Christmas. It's pretty much the same thing but with the internet and a touchscreen.

The kindle has basic internet access.
