My ICT teacher last week:
"*finds an advert for a kindle in her magazine* Boy they are pushing these kindles lately eh? I think its just an iPad ri-off, I mean the iPad has an e-reader, whats the point of this? I think I might buy an iPad soon anyway"
I was raging so hard but I stopped myself from arguing with her (she is the most apple bias person I have ever met, purely because she only grew up with a mac) and I would probably just get told off for not praising apple.

That's not what he meant. The teacher made an ignorant statement saying how no one needs eReaders because we could just get tablets and other similar devices to read on. The iPad doesn't make a very good eReader. Plus, the teacher called the Kindle an iPad ripoff which is ironic considering the iPad is relatively new and the Kindle 1 came out years ago.

Basic textbooks and shit. It's easy to find $30 books.

I was using my dads this morning, it not being backlit is actually quite good, as it really does feel like reading a book. The Iphone/Ipad reader is backlit and just rapes your eyes so much more than the kindle, especially when reading large amounts in one go.
Also due to the advantage of it being light and 1 page wide, you can piss standing up with virtually no interuption!

Exactly. The iPad is a general use tablet, being made more for media uses, while eReaders use specialty screens like eInk which are ONLY good for reading.
Hmmm, is the DX worth it?
I recently got one for a 15 hour flight and it is amazing. You would think the screen would hurt your eyes or the page turning bug you but once you get into the book you dont even notice.

IMO, no. It;s way more expensive, and the main reason to buy a kindle is because it's smaller than carrying around books. It's still thinner, but it;s taller and wider, which I think is more of a problem, and would rather just bring a book. But that's just me.
My teacher has the kindle and is gay with it.
Was my birthday a few days ago, got $100 in Amazon gift cards, going to buy tons of books.
I would get one, but apart from the passage there are no books on there that are of interest to me.
Also OP needs to update the OP with the kindle v2.

And 3. There are 3 models of Kindle, the Third being out right now.
My mom got the Barnes & Noble Nook for Christmas. It's pretty much the same thing but with the internet and a touchscreen.
actually there is a huge difference
the type of screen
if you want an e-reader, e-ink is the way to go

The regular Nook has an eInk screen. The Nook Color doesn't.
The original Nook provides a black-and-white E Ink display for viewing digital content with most navigation and additional content provided through a color touchscreen. The Color Nook provides a larger, color LCD display.
Just got a Kindle 3G. Love it.
Honestly I prefer the feel of paper on my fingers.
Maybe someday I will try this kindle though.
I'm leaving for a 4 week vacation with nothing but a backpack. I can't really bring a lot of books.
