Puerto Rico... For several years it's been an unincorporated territory of the United States of America, but as of 2012, this may change. In 2011, a bill was passed by the Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico to put up a plebiscite in 2012 to determine the future of Puerto Rico. The last plebiscite which was conducted happened in 1998... The turnout was as followed:

Statehood 728,157 46.6

Independence 39,838 2.6

Free association 4,536 0.3

Territorial commonwealth 993 0.0

None of the above 787,900 50.5

Invalid/blank votes 4,846 –

Total 1,556,270 100

Source: Nohlen

With numbers so close to Statehood[and the main Statehood Party controlling pretty much everything], people have gotta ask... Whats going to happen? As of presently the two most likely options will be either Statehood or staying as what they are presently... Personally, I support any route Puerto Ricans choose for their country.
Would they call themselves "Americans" if they became a state instead of Puerto Ricans?
Good news for flag manufacturers I guess
Would they call themselves "Americans" if they became a state instead of Puerto Ricans?
Probably consider themselves Puerto Ricans for cultural reasons.
this better not happen, otherwise we will be dragging them down with our own bullshit
Oh if the flag changes all those protesters will be burning the old flag. Chumps
Would they call themselves "Americans" if they became a state instead of Puerto Ricans?
They would be of American nationality and Puerto Rican ethnicity.
Next! Ireland becomes 52nd state of America! More at 11!
I thought Puerto Rico was a part of Cuba?
I thought Puerto Rico was a part of Cuba?
Nope, it was originally part of Spain until the US won it in the Spanish-American War.
I thought Puerto Rico was a part of Cuba?
No, that's Gitmo :v: [editline]14th February 2012[/editline]
They would be of American nationality and Puerto Rican ethnicity.
This makes sense.
They had better vote for statehood. It's bullshit how they get representation in congress even though they have the ability to become a state yet they choose not to. They don't have to pay taxes but they get representation for some reason.
No thanks. 50 is an awesome number.

That's cool, but it is weird to break the, evenness, of 50 states.
To prevent them from becoming a state just because you're so use to the number 50 is a dumb reason, in my opinion.
To prevent them from becoming a state just because you're so use to the number 50 is a dumb reason, in my opinion.
But think of all the flags we'd have to replace.
But think of all the flags we'd have to replace.
Economy stimulus :v:
Dear god we do not need that hellhole to be associated any more with the united states than it already is.
Who cares, they're already basically subjected to our bullshit, they just have to deal with it in the PR realm of "unincorporated U.S. Territory" I've visited there, and it's not so bad. Let them become a state, fuck you guys. I'd rather them have statehood, as opposed to "almost" statehood. There are many residents who really like us and want to be included officially as Americans.

Let them become a state, fuck you guys
I have lived there for fucking 6 years. Visiting a place isn't the same as living there.
Dear god we do not need that hellhole to be associated any more with the united states than it already is.
How is it a hellhole and how exactly is "associating" with it making a bad image for the US?
How is it a hellhole and how exactly is "associating" with it making a bad image for the US?
Just me exaggerating mostly. It can become a state I don't really care but it is still shitty. I doubt most foreigners even know about Puerto Rico.
I have lived there for fucking 6 years. Visiting a place isn't the same as living there.
you don't speak for all residents of Puerto Rico, and why don't you explain exactly why they would benefit economically or socially from being independent Cuba would probably invade you fuckers in 5 minutes. Also quote from Wikipedia: Government -Republic, three-branch government - President Barack Obama (D) - Governor Luis Fortuño (PNP/R) - Federal legislative branch United States Congress Sovereignty - United States Let's stop pretending and just get this over with?
Just me exaggerating mostly. It can become a state I don't really care but it is still shitty. I doubt most foreigners even know about Puerto Rico.
Okay, instead of changing the negative description, can you explain how it is how you describe it?
I used to live there for a few years in the 90's it was a pretty nice place and it felt pretty "American" in a lot of places. If they wan't to become a state go ahead. I feel that both Americans and Puerto Ricans would benefit from it. The whole 51 states would be a bit strange though.
Ah they'll be Puerto Rican American. Will they start calling themselves PRA's? With all the global economics taking a downturn, I could see this happening. It would ease burden off the local government, unfortunately it would give the US more control over what goes on, and we know how that usually turns out. I'm betting security would beef up at first.. On the bright side, I bet there would be a big push to strengthen the infrastructure and such. A lot of construction contracts and development projects.
Would they call themselves "Americans" if they became a state instead of Puerto Ricans?
You mean like how people from Hawaii call themselves Americans rather than Hawaiians?
No thanks. 50 is an awesome number.
The 51 star flag design looks awesome, though. :v:
There's a star inside that circle of stars... Starception...
