I wouldn't doubt it if they want to be a state because they would be set for life if they were a state. If they were independent, they would have very little foreign aid.
So I guess that means Gingritch's dream of having the moon be the 51st state is now shattered.
If this goes through, when people use the phrase "the 51st state", they'll probably either be meaning "the 52nd state", referring to the same concept only with a new name, or they'll be talkin' 'bout Puerto Rico. What does Puerto Rico mean anyway; the Port of Rice?
I have lived there for fucking 6 years. Visiting a place isn't the same as living there.
So? I lived there for 13 years and I was born there. And from what I experienced, it's not a shithole. I'll admit, some places are rather shitty (like Utuado, beautiful place, but economically, it sucks to live there.), but there's some rather good places in PR(like Dorado or Guaynabo). It's more of a matter of location then it just being a complete and utter hellhole to live.
The 51 is reserved for the moon base though. Puerto Rico can have the 52.
So basically it's like every other state? That's perfectly acceptable, every state has it's good or bad areas.
Pretty much. It's an enjoyable place, you just need to stay out of any of the shithole/crime-infested areas and you'll be fine.
I think they should go for it, then we invade some small country and annex them so we have an even 52 again. I mean, we ARE pretty good at invading things. [editline]14th February 2012[/editline]
this better not happen, otherwise we will be dragging them down with our own bullshit
Correct me if i'm wrong but i think they're already stuck with the same problems we have since they are U.S Owned.
Do it America
The 51 star flag design looks awesome, though. :v:
It'll probably be more like this: You know, the same way pretty much every other alteration of the flag has worked.

I always thought Latin America wanted NOTHING to do with us? I mean, besides taking our jobs (no offense).
this is a great idea. too many white people in the US. making Puerto Rico a state will balance it out a bit.
But think of all the flags we'd have to replace.
instead of rows of 6 and then 5 stars, you could do 9 and 8 stars per row with fewer rows also this happened most recently in 1959. there are plenty of people even today who were once alive under a different flag.
I say that if they want it, they should get it. They're an American territory and have every right to want to become a state.
Us flag has had a lot of different designs, some making symbols with the stars instead of bars.
I mean in terms of official alterations involving the amount of stars. No sort of official national flag has had a design made from the stars since 1890.
I'm kind of mixed on this. Idk,but that flag would look cool. But it would change everything if they became a state. They seem to be happy with what they have now. It wouldn't all necessarily be a bad thing though. [editline]14th February 2012[/editline]
I say that if they want it, they should get it. We need 49 other states then or else the cool number is ruined. How about we split one of the states in half and have 52. 51 is such an ugly number.
this better not happen, otherwise we will be dragging them down with our own bullshit
If people knew anything about how our government works they would know by just them being a territory of us, they are greatly affected by our economy and government decisions. (Our laws pretty much all apply to territories, they act almost like states without all the state powers retained in the 9th) [editline]14th February 2012[/editline]
this is a great idea. too many white people in the US. making Puerto Rico a state will balance it out a bit.
Come to California where white is the minority. 48% Asians and like 27% white attend UC: Berkeley. Theres hardly any white people out here... well, there is a lot but the population is saturated with different races.
Theres hardly any white people out here...
i live in california and you are such a damn liar
Would they call themselves "Americans" if they became a state instead of Puerto Ricans?
All Puerto Ricans are already American citizens.

It depends where you live though. I live in the bay area where there is a ton of diversity. Obviously if you live up further north theres going to be way more white people.
i live in california and you are such a damn liar
I lived in California; several places in the central valley. Every school I went to, I could count the number of white kids.
California has one of the largest populations of white americans in the US.
It also has a larger population than the bottom 14 populated states and just LA alone has more people in it than some states. so you have no point.
I don't see anything wrong with PR becoming a state as long as they want to. Although it is damn tiny.
They had better vote for statehood. It's bullshit how they get representation in congress even though they have the ability to become a state yet they choose not to. They don't have to pay taxes but they get representation for some reason.
"No taxation with representation!" - The Puerto Rican coffee party.
If they do become a state, I really want the Government to take a vote on what design should be used for the flag. I'd love to have a circular or radial design instead of the same grid.
It also has a larger population than the bottom 14 populated states and just LA alone has more people in it than some states. so you have no point.
california is almost 60% white
