What about their flag?
My apologies, I was suppose to be talking about our flag, not theirs.
How good is the Puerto Rican economy & industry? I don't know if Texans or Californiams would be too happy about having to bailout another extra state.

I don't think that's really a legitimate reason to deny statehood in any case.

It is when they already send more in federal taxes than got back with federal spending. Texas & California can't be Germany for everyone! Its not like this is some well of Western European nation were talking about. We really don't need a Greece right now in this economy.

What are you talking about.
California has the highest debt in the Union.
Oh god that flag looks really bad.
i always confuse the number of states and number of cards in a deck. i say add 2 more states and end the confusion.
What does "nationhood in free association with the US" mean, opposed to what it is now or statehood?
Less rights for the citizens in the US but they have free rule and independent law. They don't have a military, rely on the US
Edit:
I hardly think we'll change our flag to 51 stars, the 50 star flag has lasted the longest of all the rest, it'll probably stay that way.
The biggest thing is if the president of PR is going to become the governor of PR, or if they'll wait until his term is finished and elect someone else.
Exchanging PR military uniforms for US uniforms would be another.
Really? Do you seriously think there's anyone that looks at this flag:
[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/05/US_flag_51_stars.svg/800px-US_flag_51_stars.svg.png[/t]
And goes, "You know what, I think there's a problem here".

I don't understand?
I don't understand?
You said "I don't think we'll change it", but every time we've added states, whether in groups or just single ones we've changed the flag. Why would this be any different?
They have every reason to want to stay a territory: we pay for all their stuff and they pay no taxes.
We should give them a referendum on choosing becoming a state or an independent nation. The current deal is pretty one-sided.

Because the 50 star flag has been here the longest out of the rest, I believe it would be too complicated to move to a 51 star flag, imagine all the uniforms in the US that would have to change, the flags on people's front lawns.

So you're saying we should feel sorry that someone's flag on their porch is outdated? If they're patriotic enough to fly a flag out front, they're patriotic enough to buy a new damn flag.

Since Puerto Rico is a US territory, they join the US military. They do not have a military of their own
My only reason for supporting this is for a new flag.
The circle one looks best imho

Before the 50 star flag the 48 star flag was around the longest. I guess they shouldn't have changed it then either.
I dunno about you guys but i still don't accept Hawaii and Alaska as a state and I still use the 48 star flag!
Okay,
1: Puerto Rico becoming a state is a good idea, they've been a territory for so long, and if the people vote for it then hooray! In fact the only problem that would come from statehood is that there would be two more senators to argue in D.C.
2: Whats with all the people that are acting like we're anexing them or something? There are already Americans, they just don't have State hood and the specific privileges that comes with state-hood.
Bada-bing, bada-frackin'-boom.

I suppose the discussion here is now null & void?

Basically.
There's no legit reason to NOT change the flag.
Peurto Rico a state, sounds great. I think if they want it then it should be granted. I don't see why they aren't a state already.
Shit, I'd live in Peurto Rico then; Caribbean culture; too good. The food is the best.

Yeah, I'm sort of bias because I think that design looks super badass.
They have alot of crime there.
A European's opinion on the matter
If people don't want there being 51 states, they could just do any of the following:
1) Combine Virginia and West Virginia
2) Combine North Dakota and South Dakota
3) Combine North Carolina and South Carolina
4) Give/Sell Alaska to Canada
5) Not make Puerto Rico a state
6) Get used to there being 51 states

Oil dude, the oil. If there is anything.
yes, let's basically disregard politics and state economies and merge some of the states and give up alaska. after all, maps must be prettier.
I'm from Puerto Rico and yes becoming a State would make the goverment from the United States waste more money on public services.
But then again the US gains money from tourism.
I've heard that the main reason that the Puerto Rican's don't wan't to become of state is because of death penalty being applied.
