Oil dude, the oil. If there is anything.

yes, let's basically disregard politics and state economies and merge some of the states and give up alaska. after all, maps must be prettier.
I gave 1, 2, 3 and 4 as a choice, you know, just pick one.
I think I made it a bit vague, so I fixed up the post and added two more choices.
I'm from Puerto Rico and yes becoming a State would make the goverment from the United States waste more money on public services.
But then again the US gains money from tourism.
I've heard that the main reason that the Puerto Rican's don't wan't to become of state is because of death penalty being applied.
Why would the death penalty be applied? Isn't such a thing a state-only concern? It would be up to you guys to vote it in or out.

Why would anyone care that there's 51 states except that it's a dumb number that has nothing to do with politics?

I.... really have no clue how the number has to do anything with politics, hell, I don't even know anything about politics.
Puff, Cant sell Alaska. Its a symbol that America is only a short plane ride away from what used to be the biggest threat to international security.
Having a flag where we add a star each time we add a state seems like a bad idea because it assumes the country never changes.
We should just go with a more standard design that wouldn't need to be changed if the country were to gain or lose more states.

Huh.
The entire point of the stars is that the country is constantly changing, it was specifically created with change in mind.

I see what he's saying though. We're the only country that has to redesign their flag every time a state is added.
The US is supposed to be a union of a bunch of states.
Thats what the stars represent.
51 states, 51 stars.
I doubt that Puerto Rico's bid to become a state will pass the republican controlled United States House of Representatives because it could tip the balance of power by adding 2 senators and around 6 representatives who are more likely to be liberal than conservative.

I remember hearing on election day that both parties said they wouldn't stand in the way of Puerto Rico becoming a state.

Yea and in exchange we get to see a cool series of flags. Plus it's pretty exciting when we do add a new state because we get to postulate and anticipate the new flag design.
A European's opinion on the matter
If people don't want there being 51 states, they could just do any of the following:
1) Combine Virginia and West Virginia
2) Combine North Dakota and South Dakota
3) Combine North Carolina and South Carolina
4) Give/Sell Alaska to Canada
5) Not make Puerto Rico a state
6) Get used to there being 51 states
I don't think anyone here ACTUALLY doesn't want Puerto Rico to be a state just because I'd be an odd number.
Guys, imagine what our flag would look like if all 5 U.S. territories became a state:

Fucking badass, right?
Wait I miscounted I think we only have 4.

It's not as if we add a state every five minutes and have to redesign the flag every day.

Both parties say a lot of things. Don't believe any of it until they do it.

The United Kingdom would have to change their flag if Scotland leaves the union.
Going from 50 to 51 states irks the shit out of me. If Puerto Rico votes for statehood, we ought to forcefully combine North and South Carolina.

or speed up nature's work and eject California

It's an arbitrary number, stop worrying about trivial things and possibly messing up economies, culture, and such in the process of making it fit a silly number.
This needs to happen, the flag sales would revitalize the United States' economy
Time to invest in a flag company (Oh wait, they're all in China)
Guys, its just a number. Be happy you remember when there were 50 states if they actualy join the union.

I much prefer this version for some reason.
It just looks right.

It looks off to me. I'd vote for one where the stars are arranged in a round pattern instead.
