huh i wonder why they don't?
also that doesn't excuse them at all for making women objects in games
People sell games to make a profit first a foremost. not to make people happy.
If Sexist video games are what sell, that is what you are going to get the most of.

that's why feminists try and raise awareness and agitate consciousness of sexist shit. the hope is that people we become more conscious of all this and hopefully either not buy games that are sexist or petition game makers to incorporate more equal writing into their games.

Was just trying to add you as buddys on google+, plus you made it public for everyone to see.
just because something sells doesn't mean it's justified, people seek to actually criticize stuff that sells when it sells bad messages.
it's like oil consumption; just because people buy gasoline doesn't mean buying gasoline is good or that people shouldn't try and criticize the bad effects of oil consumption.

The main point here is this;
Why should developers listen to the people who buy their products the least, when they are already making so much with how they are doing it currently?
In their eyes the industry isn't broken, so they aren't going to fix it.
So uh, is it actually worth reading these 25 pages or is it one big mindless shitstorm?

in theory they should listen because they can attain more customers by improving their writing.
i mean overly racist and sexist media was the norm a couple decades ago. it was normal for sitcoms to feature the working man and the submissive housewife. nowadays people tend to look at those sitcoms as quaint and artifacts of a less equal generation. nowadays people don't make media that is quite as racist or sexist. in the same vein, people still continue to push and petition for a more equal society that will gradually get rid of these harmful stereotypes altogether.
So uh, is it actually worth reading these 25 pages or is it one big mindless shitstorm?
Dont bother, people got really sassy over some really petty jokes for like 10 pages.
So uh, is it actually worth reading these 25 pages or is it one big mindless shitstorm?
The first five pages are pretty terrible tbh, it gets more interesting after that, though.
huh i wonder why they don't?

Everything in video games is an object. They're not real.
Everything in video games is an object. They're not real.
No see, Video Games are real depictions of modern day society and people that play games actually think women in games are nothing more than objects.
Everything in video games is an object. They're not real.
Congratulations on being a pedant.
Of course games aren't "real", and neither are books, movies, TV shows, and any other work of fiction. But that's not the point. It has nothing to do with the point.
No see, Video Games are real depictions of modern day society and people that play games actually think women in games are nothing more than objects.
Congratulations on missing the point entirely.
Did you just happen to completely ignore what person11 said? Media (and by extension videogames) set standards of behavior, they influence the way people think and by portraying a group (in this case women) in a certain way, the idea sticks around and people adopt it as a truth.
but hey feel welcome to simplify everything if that's how you roll idk

they are real depictions of modern day society, just not in the way you might think.
the writing and portrayal of characters reflects on the person the writer. when many or all writers portray a theme in a similar fashion, it reflects upon society.

Only idiots let things like games influence their perception on people.

no, rapists are people who have done something terribly immoral
nice1 missing his point
oops i thought he meant that it was good that rapists were in prison (which is correcT)

and you are obviously a specimen of higher intelligence that could never fall prey to cultural influences on your psyche!
hoodedsniper: a man completely resistant to culture!
[editline]9th March 2013[/editline]
you are an example to us all. please, keep up the good work.

Or I just dont let games/books/movies influence me, are you saying you do? If so, why?
just look at her, she really looks like a crusty bitch. Defending her on forums isn't going to get you into that crustacean whale aroma'd vagina.
100k$ from fans who want feel like they did something to stop men being pigs and liking to see girls in distress
I play games to get away from reality, saving a busty, barely dressed, or torn clothing girl, carrying her over my shoulder is why I play games. That would most likely never happen to me, so I play games to switch realities, and have fun.
This bitch is trying to ruin my fun.
Plus, she got paid triple what I make in a year, in one month and barely did anything to show ANY effort for it.
jesus christ you are possibly the most sexist poster ive seen on all of facepunch, and that's saying something because facepunch is pretty fucking sexist
lmao you even have the right avatar for this

its like im reading posts by a caricature of your typical "sexist pig"
Or I just dont let games/books/movies influence me, are you saying you do? If so, why?
so do you never talk to other human beings outside of facepunch? is that how you insulate yourself from every cultural influence?
Or I just dont let games/books/movies influence me, are you saying you do? If so, why?
Ok, fair enough, you're obviously beyond the intelligence of the ignorant masses, but that doesn't mean everyone else is. Especially kids who are especially susceptible to this stuff and grow up thinking there's nothing wrong with it.
so do you never talk to other human beings outside of facepunch? is that how you insulate yourself from every cultural influence?
No, I do the exact opposite, I talk to real people from different places, for fuck sakes I lived in a dorm where I was probably one of the only 5 americans, the rest asian/korean/middle eastern/african/etc...
And you didnt answer my question, do you let media influence your perception.
its like half the people in this thread are in denial
i mean its one thing to get defensive when people claim video games cause violence. that claim is a pretty big leap to make although i think there is some basis for it (video games dont directly cause violent behavior but they enable people who are already predisposed to violent behavior to immerse themselves in violence and make it feel like its normal)
but when someone makes an intellectual point on how video games are sexist (yes ARE sexist, because it is most definitely a fact), facepunch comes in to swoop down and claim she's in the wrong because someone pointed out one flaw in fp's favorite form of media
jesus christ get over yourself video games are most definitely sexist, and it is a point worth discussing. shes not necessarily here to lecture or to give solutions, just to bring up and discuss an important topic. there are plenty of papers and documentaries out there that are just made to shine a light on ideas and arguments.
Or I just dont let games/books/movies influence me, are you saying you do? If so, why?
yo hoodedsniper
maybe just MAYBE you are magically unaffected by the subtle undertones of the media you play all the time.
but just take a look at the posters in this thread, calling her a bitch and a cunt for pointing out important flaws and trying to start a discussion
half the people here are incredibly sexist, and i would say a good part of that probably stems from video games, seeing as how much facepunch enjoys playing them
No, I do the exact opposite, I talk to real people from different places, for fuck sakes I lived in a dorm where I was probably one of the only 5 americans, the rest asian/korean/middle eastern/african/etc...

so do you think everyone you talk to is also completely resistant to the influences of culture?
and i don't let media influence my perception, but it does anyway. our perception of the world is defined by the environment we grow in, media included. media, parents, friends, family, enemies, teachers, everyone helps to shape your idea of what is right and wrong, what is correct behavior or not.
to say you don't let media influence you is worthless because it does. we are human beings, not robots that execute only the lines of code programmed into us. we are constantly influenced by what we see.
rapists

would someone mind answering this fine example of a poster's question?
