Tropes vs Women in Video Games - Damsel in Distress
I never said this was a non-issue. When I say it'd be forgotten, I meant Anita's videos and this entire debacle surrounding her and her kickstarter.
you're missing the fact that this entire thread has very little to do with the video up to this point and has more to do with most posters here just saying "dumb bitch" and "women should stick to cooking mama"
Girls are allowed to play whatever they like, the problem is that they DON'T want to play what we play, they want us to stop playing what we play so they can play the same we play without being offended.
are you saying games that poorly represent a group of people are in some way better? pretty sure the games that do the opposite are widely regarded as better, also the video is pointing out problems in the games industry and providing examples, it isn't explicitly saying those games are sexist, they just perpetuate it
but I have a feeling that most of you won't even understand any of that because all you see is a woman you don't like saying bad things about your favorite past time
and I'm right
Girls are allowed to play whatever they like, the problem is that they DON'T want to play what we play, they want us to stop playing what we play so they can play the same we play without being offended.
Then perhaps we should stop being offensive to women in the games we play?
[editline]well[/editline]
Disabling comments and ratings was a terrible move on her part.

I'm convinced you're just a troll now. I won't bother posting anymore, bye.
I can understand what she's trying to get across but it's just not usual.
Take Legend of Zelda for example, when has there ever been a female knight. (Those who know history well may be able to prove me wrong on this one) If the hero is supposed to be a knight, wouldn't it make sense for the person to be male?
I'm not advocating that we should continue to make fewer female protagonists, but it just seems that she's making a big deal out of something I don't see that pressing.
too be fair YouTube's community is absolutely awful
you wouldn't be able to get a decent discussion going in the comments, even if this particular subject didn't attract so many trolls
Agreed, but leaving it open is still better than just shutting it down. What about allowing video responses? I've seen a good number of measured video responses to her project, but I doubt she's ever so much as batted an eye towards one.
What really irks me is how during the initial funding, she blocked comments on all of her videos other than the trailer for Tropes Vs. Women. This funnels all of the angry commenters into one video, paints her as the victim, and then results in instant dollars. As soon as the funding ended, she disabled the comments on that video too. I will agree that it's the backers money and they can do what they want with it, but I can still think that Anita's practices don't sit well with me.
Clocked in 8 minutes, she's hardly irrational as the majority make her out to be. However, she does leave out information. The Mario series with the damsel in distress trope are outnumbered by the majority of non-sexist games. Therefore the Mario series isn't entirely sexist; look at Super Princess Peach, Mario Golf, Mario Party, do I need to go on?
Isn't Super Princess Peach the one where she saves the day, not by strength or smarts or anything, but by the power of her ~crazy~ mood swings?
They are though. And with good reason.
Man, I wish I could buy you a title saying "Rapists are oppressed".
OH WAIT
Seriously, I don't you know what the word "oppressed" means.
Isn't Super Princess Peach the one where she saves the day, not by strength or smarts or anything, but by the power of her ~crazy~ mood swings?
What is Dragon Ball Z?
and has more to do with most posters here just saying "dumb bitch" and "women should stick to cooking mama"
please show me where in the thread this happened besides the initial "hurr she looks like a cunt" posts that didn't go beyond the first page.
But they are allowed to play all games, there is no law against it.
If I wanted to get into something feminine , I can't complain that it doesn't cater to my manly needs. I'd be laughed out of the place inside a minute. If girls want games to cater to them, band together and create a developer for such games. Don't force your values on others. You can't police the games industry when it's a free thinking movement.
that's not how it works. for starters, you're arguing that videogames are a "manly" thing. how is this in any way true? television is not defined by gender, nor radio. There are, of course, small subsets that cater to one gender or another, like Spike or that women's TV network that I can't remember the name of, but those are two channels out of how many?!

on the second page where D:\ says exactly that?
What is Dragon Ball Z?
It's a manga series written by Akira Toriyama. Also adapted into an anime.
The more you know~
David Wong, part time complete fucking genius and by far the best article writer at Cracked.com, has an article that sheds a good amount of light on the "woman hating" that goes on a lot in society and why it exists.
http://www.cracked.com/article_19785_5-ways-modern-men-are-trained-to-hate-women.html
SatansSin is a prime example of this sort of thing. It's OK to hate a woman for reasons, but if you default to attacking her sexually (calling her a slut or a "whale encrusted vagina" or something like that when she hasn't done anything besides put on makeup) or attacking her appearance, it's pretty clear you're being a sexist twat.
The video game industry isn't the only one that is lacking in good woman role models. When was the last time you saw a good superhero movie starring a woman? Video games aren't any worse off than any other medium; we have plenty of empowering female characters, like Samus Aran (barring Other M), Jade, Alyx Vance, Big Boss, etc. The problem is that most of the people in the game industry are men, and don't know how to write female characters, or write from a woman's perspective. If you're going to go on about the "damsel in distress" trope, there's really nothing to say about video games that can't be said about any other medium. Like video games, movies also have their share of empowering female characters (Ripley for example).
If you're going to talk about a problem that's mostly unique to video games, talk about the obscene oversexualization of female characters with ridiculous proportions. Comic books had this problem as well, and it stems from the perceived audience of young "nerdy" males that the developers want to cater to.

when most of the responses to your content are death threats I imagine it's not really worth the risk. You need to look into "empathy"
Definition of oppression

prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority:
a region shattered by oppression and killing
the state of being subject to oppressive treatment:

Quite interesting video, think she could of done this before the kick starter, the camera quality looks the same, its not even in 1080p
No surprise, she doesn't provide any solutions to the "problems" she "analyzes"
Fucking this, whats the point pointing out problems when you give no possible solutions, you think someone who went to university would know how to structure a proper argument.
Girls are allowed to play whatever they like, the problem is that they DON'T want to play what we play, they want us to stop playing what we play so they can play the same we play without being offended.
This is the strangest hypothesis I've ever heard in my life, it seriously eclipses most of the conspiracy theories on AVfM
Hall of Fame
1. Spermjacking
2. mobrockers' video game thing
3. Circumcision as a feminist conspiracy
4. Sound of high heels as male mind control

since when is Link a knight? And yes there are good games! She is doing a video on this near the end of the series, I think.
The problem isn't with the individual games, it's that the majority of games are like this. And yeah, you wouldn't see it as that big of a deal if you're not a woman. There's a reason that people like character creators in games - so you can be more like your character.
prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority:
key word being unjust, of course

reread that lol
prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority
you can't just pick the parts you like, the path you took was "prolonged cruel excercise of authority" you can't just remove the cruel part
do you really think rapists are being mistreated?
when most of the responses to your content are death threats I imagine it's not really worth the risk. You need to look into "empathy"
If I had a dollar for every "death threat" I've seen on a youtube comment, I'd have enough money to buy the moon several times and enough duct tape to wrap them into the galaxy's biggest katamari. With the internet and anonymity, stupid comments are going to be everywhere. But like I said, being transparent and open to discussion is always better than closing off all communication and spinning things your own way. I may not agree with some of Anita's points, but if she were open to opposing conversation I would have some respect for her.
Her abhorrent method of channeling all the hatred for her own gain is appalling and the refusal of noting any opposing arguments is childish.

just because it occurs in other mediums doesn't make it okay. Also you have to make a distinction between "oversexualization" and "empowerment." also, you name all of those characters, but one never says a word, and the others are just side-characters, you don't actually play as them. Jade, is a good example, without a doubt. Anyway, there are very few games that have strong female leads you actually play as, blah blah. there are a number of problems. The point is those other industries over time have become much much better at introducing and depicting strong female characters.
do you really think rapists are being mistreated?
I think rapists are mistreated in the sense that everyone in the North American prison system is mistreated but that's as far as I'll go
since when is Link a knight? And yes there are good games! She is doing a video on this near the end of the series, I think.
She only included the video highlighting positives in video games as a small afterthought after she got some extra backer money.

You're making her out to be some sort of ingenius manipulator. Nope, just another person, not a sociopath. to be honest I'm surprised she went through with making these videos at all after all of that bullshit
reread that lol

Torture is not the way to deal with ANY person, regardless of their deeds. If punishment is warranted then it should be swift and dignified.
key word being unjust, of course
Depends entirely on how you divide that sentence.
I split it up as:
prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or
prolonged exercise of authority
If that's not the correct way to do this then I apologize.
Fucking this, whats the point pointing out problems when you give no possible solutions, you think someone who went to university would know how to structure a proper argument.
You should check out the thesis she wrote about misogyny in the media. I think she pulled it from wherever it used to be, but there's some mirrors out there. Same kind of analysis that you get in her videos.
Take Legend of Zelda for example, when has there ever been a female knight.
Not exactly a knight, but still.

So what? The video series is "TROPES VS WOMEN" not "THESE FEW TIMES WOMEN WERE SHOWN POSITIVELY"
