Tropes vs Women in Video Games - Damsel in Distress
Bioware's obvious pandering in how they made her curvier and ran a contest just to make her "prettier" is not indicative of a positive character. That'd be like saying making everyone gay in Dragon Age 2 was more positive than say, Arcade Gannon in New Vegas.
it wasn't a content to make her prettier, just a choice between 3 default designs. are you forgetting that you can make your own character in mass effect? also I don't think she was any more or less curvier in any game, seemed pretty much the same throughout the series.
No, she has clearly established character through her actions and monologues before Other M. She has a lot of introspective dialogue in Fusion and there's absolutely nothing wrong with her character at that point. It's solely Other M that fucks her up.
Fusion is the exception to the rule, I'll give you that. I don't think in any of the, say, four lines of dialog through the entirety of the series outside of that establish too much character other than that she's a "hardass space marine" or w/e

Also all the skimpy dresses and lacy underwear she gets in 3.
can i do the same thing to ur posts?
"I poop"
wow real mature
Shadaez, uh, look.
I agree with you almost 90%. But stooping to the idiotic level that you're currently at is almost making me not want to agree with you
I do believe it's
prolonged (cruel or unjust) (treatment or exercise of authority)
Ah right. That's pretty damn confusing.

well, that may have been fan service, fair enough lol. am I wrong in saying you can choose your body proportions when making your character, though?
What is spermjacking.
women stealing used condoms to impregnate themselves and then suing the man for child support to get rich
Shadaez, uh, look.

it's a joke lol

You can edit your face in the ME series, but you can't manipulate your body.
Also one thing I have to point out about the word "bitch" being called a sexist insult; it's gender specific mostly, yes, but some of the time I wouldn't say it's sexist. There are many male-specific insults that are seldom used on females (asshole, douchebag, etc) and bitch is simply the female equivalent of them. If bitch isn't being used towards a specific woman for their specific personality though, and is just being used because they're a woman, then it is a sexist insult.
I thought you could, at least in ME1. Haven't played them in a long time. Regardless, only 10% or so of players play as femshep and that change is very subtle so I can't really say it's the worst thing in the world, you know
well, that may have been fan service, fair enough lol. am I wrong in saying you can choose your body proportions when making your character, though?
No, I'm pretty sure you can only choose the facial features of your character.

That's not really a fair comparison as she looks much more 'human' in each new game. She looks generally the same though still, they haven't done anything to make her look more sexy apart from making her look more real.

lol I was kind of thinking that she has a sort of alien looking bone structure in the first one. could just be the armor though

Wasn't this in the news like a year ago.

That's because almost no one has any dialogue in any of the other games. Metroid Prime 3 and possibly 2 are the only games where other characters have more lines of dialogue than Samus.
i don't really understand the point of these videos. does she really think the developers of the games deliberately try and make women seem as if they were lesser or something? 150k for shit that has been used forever (the damsel in distress, and other 'tropes' like that) in every other type of media is really pointless honestly.
it happens like once every blue moon (idk if that is the expression) but people make it out to be a massive conspiracy that happens all the time

again, just because they have "been used forever" doesn't make them right

you could apply the same argument to blackface if you wanted
I know I'm late on saying this but I knew starting a thread about Anita Sarkeesian would either derail into a shouting contest and/or just posts unrelated to the video and just throwing insults. For the people that thought Anita is a thief (and based their argument about it) should now feel incredibly stupid. Now does this mean I agree with her? No, I just didn't agree with the accusations of her being a thief. As predicted she disabled comments and ratings, yes I know if she did it would just be mainly troll comments and praise comments, but still it allows discussion and only seems like she's avoiding dissenting opinions. There are videos that criticize her maturely without thief accusations, sandwich/kitchen type jokes, etc. though they seem to have been lost in the big mound of crap surrounding this fiasco. It seems like anyone who criticizes her falls into one of two categories based on the gender of the critic:
1. If you're a man critiquing her, you're a sexist privileged pig and therefore not worth taking seriously.
2. If you're a woman critiquing her, you're obviously so deeply oppressed by the patriarchy that you don't know it and need saving.
I'd like to hear civil critique and review of her points without any critic of Anita instantly being labeled a misogynist or whatnot. But maybe I'm being too hopeful, I don't know.

No one is saying they're right, all people are saying is that what she's pointing out has been pointed out a million times by other people and she isn't really bringing anything new to the discussion.

True, but how many of the IP's where it still happens are new, and how many have been around for the last 15 years which means they can't just suddenly change this as it's basically part of the IP.

LOL

well he just said it's "pointless" to do. it's not. any discussion at all helps, at least it is bringing the discussion up instead of ignoring it completely

uh oh

I mean you used video footage this time so the slight difference justifies the $150,000 right?

I don't think the words (most of them anyway) are sexist themselves, it's more about the way they're used. You can tell when someone uses it with a sexist/mysoginistic intent.
I mean, "you bitch" is a lot different to "you crustacean whale aroma'd vagina bitch", I don't know.

hahaha zing mate XD!!!
Please stop. This is the closest thing we've had to an actual discussion about this whole fucking issue.

the point of these videos is that she milked lodesmoney from one of the most gullible, idiotic groups of people in the universe and if she doesn't put anything out they'll eventually catch on and the gravy train will end.

Asshole and douchebag aren't gendered at all, women have buttholes too if you didn't know
and douches are just bad things.
