I don't think they're too bad (I'm not a big fan of them either), but I do agree in that they're overrated. Since Axis Powers Hetalia came out, a lot of "personified countries" comics have been appearing from nowhere. This is one of those knockoffs

He always depends on unrealistic stereotypes to make his characters look better, he absolutely loves lesbians as if they're the only gays, He says he hates furries but still has the most annoying ugly furry piece of shit characters that spews out alot of random crap. You know, the kind of character u just want to strangle.
Also kicking someone in mid sentence when they're talking about a topic they know little about is a great way to represent lesbians.

It's like he doesn't have any form of respect for his own characters.
I don't know, when I'm creating my own characters, I tend to imagine them as normal people in my mind, with different traits/opinions/objectives from each other and mine, how they will deal themselves for each situation. I let them take over my story. But meh, that's from my own experience, so I may be wrong.
